Unforgettable Keats experience in Shanghai

This was my second time choosing Keats school for an immersive Chinese program and I enjoyed it even more than the first time! This time I chose a two-week four hours per day 1-on-1 course in Shanghai. Keats really took care of everything. I was picked up from the airport by my teacher Yuki, who came over especially from Kunming, and we immediately got on very well. I really enjoyed the classes which were amazingly tailor made to my interests and likings. We discussed a range of interesting topics, all in Chinese. Every day after class we would go out for lunch together (the costs of which were also covered by Keats), explore the city together and have a lot of fun. Yuki took note of all the words I asked her during the day, and have personalised example sentences prepared the next day. In the evening, she sent me the notes from that day’s class for review. My room was comfortable and only one floor apart from the classroom, which was very convenient. The building was located in a lively area and access to a hotel gym and indoor swimming pool were provided as well. The two weeks flew by and I really felt like I had a 24/7 private guide, who helped me improve my Chinese tremendously and also felt like a friend. I would definitely want to go again and highly recommend studying Chinese with Yuki at Keats to anyone who’s up for an immersive experience!

An Unforgettable Experience at Keats School in Kunming

From the moment I arrived, everything was well arranged. They quickly sat down with me to figure out what I wanted to work on and built a study plan around that — which I really appreciated.
I stayed with a host family during my stay, which was honestly great. Really kind people, and just being around them in the evenings after class taught me a lot too. Things you just don't pick up in a classroom.
Six hours of private lessons a day is a lot, not going to lie. But it works. You're kind of forced to just go for it, and looking back that's exactly what I needed. My spoken Chinese improved way more in one week than I expected going in.
Would definitely recommend it to anyone who's serious about learning Mandarin and wants to actually make progress fast.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Just go for it and don't be afraid to make mistakes. The immersion is intense but that's the whole point — embrace it, speak as much as you can outside of class too, and make use of your host family. You'll progress faster than you think.
Pros
  • One-on-one lessons fully tailored to your level
  • Living with a host family adds a whole extra layer to the experience
Cons
  • Six hours of private lessons a day can be intense

Kunming school is best

It has been a very good learning experience overall. The improvement is clearly visible after continuous practice day by day. Every lesson is practical and closely connected to daily life, so what students learn is truly useful for real communication. The teachers are professional, patient and responsible. Every class is carefully planned and well prepared with rich topics, vocabulary and conversation practice. Students never feel bored during class, and they keep making progress in listening and speaking step by step.

We are staying in Kunming right now, and the city leaves all the students a wonderful impression. Kunming boasts pleasant weather all year round, with mild temperatures, bright sunshine and fresh air most days. Comfortable climatic conditions make our study and daily leisure time much more enjoyable. Today marks the final class of this study period, all learners maintained an excellent learning state throughout the whole session, and we finished targeted listening and oral practice with satisfying results. Later we will head to the local tea market to pick out tea together. This outdoor activity can not only serve as a nice ending for our whole course, but also let students experience local tea culture and practise Chinese dialogue in real shopping scenarios.

Four weeks in Kunming

I had the chance to spend for weeks at Keats in Kunming this summer and really enjoyed it.
From monday to friday, I had four hours of class in the morning and afternoons free to explore the city.
During this time, I feel like my chinese improved a lot, in particular to gain confidence to speak even if it is just short sentences to order food.
Many thanks to Ma Laoshi and Li Laoshi (李芳芳), who had patience in particular when it came to pronounciation.

Besides studying, Kunming has a lot parks to visit as well as tea and coffee to drink.
Every day there is an activity organized by Keats, with my highlights being the visit to the stone forest, and playing chinese chess.

Pros
  • Great Teachers
  • Surroundings and weather
  • Good Tea and Coffee

Learn Chinese in KEATS

I studied here for a week and i wish i did it for longer. I was fluent in basic chinese so it was easy to pick up on things but im sure if i had done it for a month or two i could reach HSK3. The teacher personalizes classes and i could see improvement real quick. Ms. Wang is the best cant wait to be back. Ms wang and claire were helpful not only during class but also beyond when i needed help with my life in Chengdu. They also have outdoor classes, where you can learn Chinese in fun way. They also have a campus in Kunming i would love to check that out too. The campus in chengdu is perfect for students its quiet but also not too far from city so you can go out conveniently after classes.I will come back again for sure. This is so worth it🥹.

KEATS Summer

The staff are all welcoming and nice. They provide snacks and a lively atmosphere. Overall I really enjoyed this experience and would highly recommend going here to study chinese.
I really love studying Chinese at this school in Chengdu. My teacher is extremely nice, patient and friendly. She always explains words and grammar clearly and encourages me to speak Chinese bravely in class. Besides regular lessons, there are plenty of fun afternoon activities every week. I joined many interesting group activities, including handcraft workshops. Making handmade works with classmates was such a wonderful and unforgettable experience. I can not only improve my Chinese skills here, but also experience authentic Chinese culture. The school environment is warm and comfortable. Every day I look forward to coming to class. It’s such a great place for foreign learners to learn Chinese and make new friends. I highly recommend this school

My experience in Kunming

I spent a truly warm and fulfilling time studying at Kitz Chinese School. I think the school and the three teachers are all wonderful, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Teachers Gong, Yang, and Wang.

I am especially grateful to Teacher Gong for the academic aspect. Teacher Gong is professional and wholehearted in his teaching, dedicating himself entirely to guiding the Chinese language. His explanations are meticulous and clear; he teaches everything step-by-step, from studying Chinese characters and grammar to conversational expressions and writing practice. He also provides supplementary guidance on my weaknesses one by one, helping me to steadily build my Chinese skills. Thanks to Teacher Gong's attentive guidance, my Chinese proficiency has improved noticeably, and studying has become increasingly easier.

In my daily life, having Teachers Yang and Wang always by my side looking after me was a great help. Both teachers are truly gentle and kind, always looking after my daily life and my state of mind. Whenever I faced difficulties or felt lost, they would be the first to reach out and offer a helping hand, solve my problems, and comfort me, meticulously looking after my daily routine

Excellent teacher

I took one-to-one Chinese lessons at Keats School for about five years. During that time, I had the opportunity to study with many excellent teachers, but Pi Laoshi is definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had. She quickly understood my Chinese level, learning style, and goals, and always adjusted her lessons to meet my needs. She was incredibly patient and explained difficult grammar and vocabulary in a way that was easy to understand. She also encouraged me to speak Chinese as much as possible, which greatly improved my confidence and communication skills. Whenever I made mistakes, she corrected them kindly and clearly, making every lesson enjoyable and productive. Her enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication inspired me to continue studying Chinese. I truly appreciate all the time and effort she invested in helping me improve. I highly recommend Pi Laoshi to anyone who wants to learn Chinese from a knowledgeable, supportive, and outstanding teacher.

What would you improve about this program?

A great 4 weeks

I really enjoyed my time at Keats and didn't want to leave. I met lots of interesting people from all over, and the teaching quality was excellent. I loved my teacher and will try to continue online classes with her. Lots of other students who had different teachers also commented how good the quality of the teaching is.

Keats puts on a social activity every night/day, so it is a great way to see new places and meet other students. Part of the reason I chose group classes was to make it easier to meet people, but actually it wasn't necessary because the environment and planned events takes care of that. The events range from going to markets, sightseeing, doing traditional crafts, seeing a show, or going out to play pool - so there's something for everyone.

The life advisor service is also great. Anything you need help with can be sorted. For example, Willow, the life advisor found a place for me to get my nails done and called for me to make an appointment. Or she pre-booked tickets for me to go to a museum to make getting in faster for me.

Kunming is a lovely city. I would definitely return if there was a good opportunity. It is not all ultra modern like some other Chinese cities but that gives it a unique charm and appeal. It's big but not so big that you feel overwhelmed. And there are some particularly cute areas around Green Lake Park. It’s quite easy to find a cute café/bookshop to hang out in near the school. The best part of Kunming is really the fact that it’s in Yunnan, which has a very rich culture, as there are many ethnic minorities. I took a weekend trip to a nearby city called Dali with other students and it was the highlight of my 4 week stay. So if you go to Keats, definitely make use of the beauty of the surrounding areas. After this stay, I feel like I definitely need to explore more of Yunnan.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I went to a hotpot place near the school where the base included lots of fruit. It was so good and definitely a must trip!
