Studying Chinese in Kunming

I came to Kunming to study at Keats Languages because I had heard it was a good school and I was keen to visit Kunming. My experience far exceeded my expectations. The staff were invariably friendly and helpful and I loved all the excursions, activities and meals that the school arranged. Easily the best aspect of my time here was the excellent teaching. My teacher is extremely gifted and I have learned a lot from her. She is hardworking, with fantastic lesson preparation and follow-up summaries. She is thoughtful and sensitive to my learning needs and my interests in Chinese culture and language, including many helpful excursions to bookshops, stationery stores and coffee shops — essential to keeping my level of concentration high!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I wasn’t expecting to eat silkworms but they were delicious, especially as part of a banquet with other students.
Pros
  • Excellent teaching
  • Great extracurricular activities
  • Professional management

The best way to learn Chinese in the most beautiful province

This program really helped me break my plateau in Chinese. I was not confident about my level, but my teacher was really supportive, careful. Her very well organised content was challenging me while building on my strengths to help me improve. There is also a wide range of activities in the class. As it’s a very small group, the teacher is very attentive to each of us, and we receive very clear class notes every day after class. The class at intermediate level is almost only in Chinese which is amazing for my listening skills. We also regularly watch cultural documents like short films or tv shows. The work on vocabulary and grammar is really thorough. I feel much more competent after only two weeks and this gave me the motivation to keep learning Chinese hard. Hopefully I’ll go back to Keats as the teacher, the program and the city are the perfect combination.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Embrace the experience, don’t be shy, Kunming is full of lovely people and the school has a solid team to help you navigate your first steps in China. Don’t hesitate!
Pros
  • Very available staff
  • Rigorous curriculum planning
  • Fully immersive experience

Chengdu

My experience at Keats School in Chengdu has been wonderful. I joined the small group program, where every morning we study Chinese in two different level groups so everyone can learn comfortably. After class we have lunch together, and in the afternoon the school organizes cultural visits around the city. In the evening we return for dinner. The teachers are patient and supportive, and the program is well organized. It is a perfect way to improve Chinese while enjoying life in Chengdu.

Pandas Tea Culture

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I saw was the Sichuan Opera. I was amazed by how quickly the performers changed their masks, because it looked almost impossible to understand. I also loved the moment when they poured tea into the cups with the long traditional teapot, which was very elegant to watch. Another unforgettable moment was when one performer breathed fire on stage.
Pros
  • Small groups make learning more personal
  • Cultural activities make Chinese more practical.
  • Teachers are patient and supportive.

My best trip in China

My experience in Chengdu was honestly unforgettable, and I would definitely give it 5 stars. I joined a 10-day campus in China, and it turned out to be much more than just a study trip—it was a mix of learning, discovery, and personal growth.

In the mornings, we had lessons that were interesting and interactive. The teachers were kind, patient, and always ready to help us, which made the classes feel relaxed and enjoyable. We didn’t just study the language, but also learned a lot about Chinese culture in a natural and engaging way.

What made the experience really special were the activities in the afternoon. Every day we explored something new, and I had the chance to visit amazing places like the Giant Buddha of Leshan, which was truly impressive, the People’s Park, where you can see local life, and the Chengdu Museum. I also loved visiting Du Fu’s cottage, a peaceful place full of history.

Some of the most exciting moments were watching the Sichuan Opera, with its incredible face-changing performance, and trying a kung fu class, which was both fun and challenging. One of the highlights was definitely the panda reserve, where I could see pandas up close. We also visited the ancient irrigation system, which showed how advanced Chinese engineering was even in the past.

Chengdu itself is a beautiful city, lively but also calm at the same time. What I enjoyed most was observing everyday life and meeting local people, who were always friendly and welcoming.

Of course, food was an important part of the experience. At first, the spicy dishes were a bit difficult for me, but after a few days I started to really enjoy them.

my trip in chengdu

Studying at the Keats campus in Chengdu has been one of the most complete and transformative experiences I have ever had, not only from an academic perspective but also on a human and cultural level. From the very first day, you can feel a highly organized, professional, and at the same time welcoming environment. The facilities are modern, well-maintained, and designed to support both intensive study and meaningful interaction with students from all over the world.

The real strength of the campus is undoubtedly its teaching method. Lessons are highly personalized and tailored to each student’s needs. The teachers are skilled, patient, and always available, making even beginners feel comfortable. Thanks to this focused and intensive approach, progress in the language is noticeable within just a few days, especially in speaking confidence and comprehension.

However, what truly makes the Keats experience unique is the integration of study with cultural exploration. The organized activities allow students to connect directly with Chinese culture, turning each day into something much more than just a lesson.

Among the most memorable moments are the excursions. Visiting the panda reserve was both exciting and almost magical: seeing these iconic animals up close in their natural environment creates a sense of wonder that is hard to describe. It is one of those experiences that stays with you and makes you feel deeply connected to China’s nature and identity.

Thanks to these activities, every day becomes an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and see the world from a different perspective. At first, there may be a sense of disorientation, especially for those visiting China for the first time, but it is quickly replaced by curiosity, excitement, and a desire to discover more and more.

In conclusion, the Keats campus in Chengdu is not just a language school, but a fully immersive experience. It allows you to grow, open your mind, and experience China in an authentic way. It is a journey that leaves a lasting mark and one I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to combine study, travel, and emotion into one extraordinary adventure.

Chengdu: un viaggio tra lingua, cultura e meraviglia

5 parole su Chengdu:
Tradizione – Panda – Cultura – Gastronomia – Relax

5 words about Chengdu:
Tradition – Panda – Culture – Gastronomy – Relaxation

Going to Chengdu to study Chinese and discover such an authentic experience proved to be one of the most meaningful decisions of my journey. From the first moment, the city welcomed me with a relaxed yet culturally rich atmosphere, exceeding all expectations.

One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was meeting an extraordinary teacher, capable of tailoring each lesson to my needs. With patience and attention, she worked on pronunciation, grammar, and conversation, helping me make tangible improvements. Even in moments of difficulty, her constant encouragement allowed me to gain confidence and express myself without fear.

What made this journey truly unique was the learning method: the lessons were not limited to the classroom, but took place directly in the city's most iconic locations. At the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, I was able to observe pandas and describe their behavior in their native language, making my vocabulary vivid and immediate. At the Wuhou Temple, I delved into the history of the Three Kingdoms, enriching my vocabulary with historical and cultural terms.

Strolling through People's Park and the famous Heming Teahouse, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in local daily life, conversing with locals and improving my fluency. In the Kuanzhai Alleyways, amidst traditional architecture and an ancient atmosphere, I learned typical idioms and expressions.

A visit to the Chengdu Museum completed my journey, offering a profound insight into the city's history and evolution. A particularly fascinating moment was attending the Sichuan Opera, famous for its "changing of masks," a surprising show rich in symbolic meaning that allowed me to experience one of the region's most iconic artistic expressions.

This trip represented the perfect balance between study and discovery: effective and personalized learning on the one hand, and total immersion in the local culture on the other. Chengdu is not just a city to visit, but a place to live, capable of leaving a profound impression. It's an educational and human experience that I recommend without hesitation.
