Theatre internship

I worked in a small theatre in southeast London and instead if doing "normal" office work or running errands I got to be fully hands on. I directed 3 shows in my time there. I conducted all my own auditions and rehearsals. I also worked in tr advertising and producing aspect of the company. I would absolutely recommend it. The Intern London team was great with getting me contacts and helping make the trip smooth. The housing situation can be a little shady depending on the neighborhood and the hidden fees are a lot. Getting that visa is insanely expensive. But overall it was worth it. I met a lot if great people and I developed my craft beyond anything I had expected.

What would you improve about this program?
I would work on the housing in southeast London. My neighborhood was scary at night- I lived right by the south Bermondsey station

Secretary of Education Internship, Accommodation, Safety, Support - review

Internship:
My internship in the Secretary for Education of Sabaneta was incredibly disappointing. I was not given any of the jobs mentioned in the role description (scrutinising and evaluating the school curriculum for Sabaneta students and proposing how we could improve this). I managed to join a research project started by a previous intern, but we received no training or guidance on improving our personal development throughout. As such, I feel I learned little from the experience.

The secretary for education was not prepared to offer structured and meaningful internships.

Accommodation:
This was wonderful! Conveniently located and in a very safe area, I had no complaints. Our maid, Lijia, always put so much effort into making the place look amazing when she came each week.

Safety:
I felt very safe at home, travelling to work, and exploring medellin. The walking tour included in the programme is very useful for helping you figure out where is safe to go in the city centre. Medellín is certainly not as unsafe as people outside of the country would have you believe!

Support:
I would've liked for the intern group representatives to check in with me more, and do something about it if I wasn't getting enough from my internship.

Otherwise, they were very receptive about things we needed, e.g. Maintenance in our flat. They also try hard to organise social events for the interns to meet each other, which were great fun.

Response from API Intern Group

We are saddened that you did not enjoy your internship in the Secretary of Education. The Colombian work style is certainly very different from the UK style and as we make clear in our pre-departure material, it is crucial that interns are much more proactive than they would be used to being in the UK. Interns in Colombian culture are expected to constantly be asking supervisors for feedback and for more tasks. With that said though, we will certainly be feeding in your comments to our partners at the Government to make sure future interns feel the internships are as meaningful and structured as possible. However we are glad you enjoyed the social events as we’re sure you could see how hard our country directors worked to make sure everyone had a good time! Also we’re pleased you found the accommodation wonderful! One of the most important aspects of our program is that our interns feel comfortable and at home.

Deluxe Program was a Great Deal

The Deluxe Program is the way to go. It was a little more expensive than the regular program, but included so many additional social activities and outings. I loved my day at Wimbledon and my weekend in Paris through the program. The student housing building I stayed in left a lot to be desired, but overall my summer in London was a great success.

What would you improve about this program?
Find better housing and make sure participants are fully equipped with kitchen supplies during their stay. Also, expand your list of companies to intern with. The selection I had was very limited in 2013.

London for Marketing = good for my future

Ive recently finished a 6 week program in London and I am so happy to have had this experience. I worked in online marketing at a US based firm with offices in Canary Wharf, London, which is the main financial and commercial hub of the city.

The accommodation was very nearby to work so I had a quick and easy commute. I was living with other people from the program, and some other foreign students from Australia and Canada. All was pretty organized and neat - the only thing was sometimes it could get a little untidy but thats not the end of the world.

Work started off with not much to do and was a problem - but I spoke with Lee the London director and he advised me to bring it up to my boss. Once I spoke with him suddenly I had too much to do! But in the end it balanced out and I really started to learn a lot.

The thing that made the program for me was the fun and events round London, organized every week by Ariana and the team. The team REALLY care about what they do - and its obvious in everything they do.

Thanks Lee and everyone for making my time in London an experience to remember.

What would you improve about this program?
I think there could and should be more regular communication between confirming my place on the program and actually arriving in London. I sometimes felt a bit nervous. Everything worked out great in the end, but more communication would have been very reassuring!

An excellent opportunity

As one of the first participants in the Intern Melbourne program, I must say that overall I was very impressed with the program. I worked as an accountant intern at a local event management company that was about a 20 minute train ride from the accommodation in Bell. The accommodation is set up like a hotel with individual rooms/bathrooms and a shared kitchen and laundry room on each floor. There is also a nice pool and game room on the premises. It was safe and clean enough, and it is possible to upgrade, so I have no complaints.

The most valuable experience I gained from my internship (aside from international working experience for my resume) was meeting/networking with other interns from all over the world. While the internship was a valuable experience for me, I would have to say that, by far, the most valuable part of my participation in the program was immersing myself in a new culture and meeting so many new people, both in the Intern Melbourne program and also throughout the city. The accommodation at Bell City was full of students and interns who were from all parts of the world, and we all shared a common bond of being travelers in a new country. Because of this, I formed a lot of really great friendships in Melbourne.
Melbourne itself is a fantastic, vibrant city with so many good people and a lot of fun to be had. It is definitely a place worth experiencing, and my only regret is not staying there longer. Also, the Intern Melbourne staff are really fantastic and helpful, and Lewis and Lana are always willing to help (and go out for some fun). I can say with 100% certainty that they really do want for you to get the most out of the program. They made my stay in Melbourne so much more enjoyable.
For those considering this program I can say that it turned out to be a really great experience for me because I learned so much about both myself and others. The best way to get the most out of the program is to let go of all your inhibitions, jump right in with both feet and allow Melbourne to grace you with its goodness!

What would you improve about this program?
Improvements I would suggest are more events for professional development and transportation to the airport upon departure from the program.

An Amazing Experience

Wishing to learn Spanish, I was signed up to go to Mexico as a part of a study abroad through my school when I came across the Intern Group. The thought of going to Madrid appealed to me because not only would I be able to study abroad and learn Spanish, but I could potentially get valuable internship experience as well.

I was put in contact with Thalassa and within a few weeks of communicating back and forth she informed me I had a Skype interview with Grant Thornton. Here in the US, Grant Thornton is a highly sought after accounting firm that is currently ranked 5th on a list of the top 100 accounting firms in the US so naturally I was both surprised and exciting to hear that I could potentially be working here while interning in Madrid. A few weeks after the interview Thalassa told me they had offered me the position, and naturally I accepted.

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, the Intern Group team made me feel both welcome and excited to be in Madrid and see all it had to offer. Within the first few group outings Thalassa and I both discovered we shared a love for hamburgers and over the next few days she continually sent me lists of places I should try in order to start my side journey to find the best one in Madrid. This is just a brief example of the things the people apart of the Intern Group team did to make each person’s experience that much more personal. When I arrived I was quickly welcomed by the other interns who were able to show me the ropes on what to see and do in Madrid, and later once they completed their stay and other interns arrived I found myself as the perceived veteran and was able to do the same thing for them. It was really interesting meeting people from different places all over the world and talking and comparing and contrasting both our everyday lives from our respective home countries and the differences between our home country and Madrid.

Though personally I never had any problems arise while in Madrid along with most other interns there, the few unforeseeable dilemmas that arose the Intern Group was there to handle in the timely manner I would say there was definitely never a big problem or conflict. At work, I was given both tasks that related to what I planned to do further in my career and the freedom of not having someone always breathing down your neck and letting you work at your own pace. My colleagues were rather friendly and I truly enjoyed the internship aspect of Madrid. Once I returned home I quickly was offered another competitive, highly paid internship that I am currently completing while I finish school and I definitely think I was both considered for the initial interview and offered the position because of my internship abroad in Madrid.

Being home for several months now I frequently find myself missing Madrid and the time I spent there. I am still in contact with people apart the Intern Group team, other interns that were there with me, and even other friends I met while in Madrid. If you are looking for something that will not only provide with valuable internship experience, but an opportunity to see an amazing city and have a wonderful experience I would highly recommend this program.

Madrid Intern experience!

I could not recommend Madrid more as a city to experience an internship! Guaranteed amazing social life, opportunities to explore Spain and travel, meet incredible like-minded people and get a great boost to your CV as well as an invaluable experience to network!

It goes without saying that Thalassa is there for anything you need...be it finding your perfect internship or recommending a great bar ;)

Awesome Experience

I had previously studied Spanish in Spain and knew I wanted to go back. I looked around for internships online and finely settled on Intern Madrid because it seemed like the best program and at a really reasonable price. The people were great right from the start. I had a couple Skype sessions in order to figure out my interests and what I wanted out of an internship and got a great placement. Upon arrival I immediately felt welcomed and there were lots of great events to meet people and make friends. The people at work were also really great and made you feel included.

Thalassa was really great and was always there if you needed anything. Whether it was a restaurant recommendation, bringing you to a store or even letting me borrow her iron when we didn't have one. She really helped to make this experience a great one.

The housing was great. I had a pretty big apartment and even a balcony in my room and overall I had no complaints about it.

My work experience at the job was great. They gave me a lot of responsibility and freedom and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I just found a full time job now that I am graduating and this internship really stood out. I was able to talk about so many applicable experiences that I feel set me apart.

Overall this was a great experience. I made a lot of great friends, got good experience and fell in love with Spain all over again. I hope to be able to return and work there again some day.

Couldn't have asked for more

I approached Thalassa and the Intern Group with a somewhat peculiar situation, as I was already in Europe and looking for a way to stay, get a job and enjoy the Spanish culture. Within a few weeks (2) Thalassa had placed me in an incredible internship! Although my circumstance is not applicable to most interns/applicants, this attests to their flexibility, attentiveness and hard work in accommodating anyone's specific needs.

My internship placement could not have been more fun. Not only did the position fit my personality and professional interests, but my employers were incredibly helpful in recommending fun activities, places to eat, and trips to take around Spain. They truly understand that while you are there to work and gain working experience, this is also an opportunity for you to explore the culture and have fun! I found a great balance of work and play, which is exactly what I wanted.

Housing...at first, I had a brief issue with an overbearing landlord who decided it was perfectly okay to enter my apartment without warning, or even without me home, I expressed my concerns with Thalassa she sprung into action! Within 24 hours she had found me the most incredible flat in what quickly became my favorite neighborhood in Madrid—without a crazy landlord. She did so with no questions asked, simply concerned with my happiness and well-being. This set the tone for the rest of my program, encouraging me to approach her with any issues I may have had. This woman is amazing at what she does—I swear she never rests!

Don't worry about making friends—Intern Group goes out of their way to ensure friendships are made between interns and staff alike with Friday Tapas nights, movie nights, trips to Toledo, and just the normal-day "hey let's grab drinks after work!" Or, if learning Spanish is on your to-do list, Thalassa quickly found me an amazing Spanish tutor that I'm still in touch with!

I have, and will continue to, recommend this program to friends. And I cannot wait to return to Madrid and see the city I love, as well as the friends I made while there!

PR job with Intern London

I participated in one of Intern London's programs during the summer of 2013, and it was just an all around great time. I was interning with a PR company that put on really cool events all over the city, really giving me the chance to see a lot of stuff that I never thought I would have in just 3 months. I even saw the Mayor :)

The staff was super nice. I didn't really have a lot of occasions to call them and ask for help with anything, but I did have to get some help once finding out how to go to the doctor (I'm originally from the USA). They ran me through everything and one of the staff even met me afterwards to make sure it all went ok.

I'd recommend this to anyone. Can't imagine an easier time settling into a city I've never been to before. It helps that they have lots of social activities for everyone. It also helps that it's London.

What would you improve about this program?
I wasn't really given a lot of work towards the beginning of my internship (the main reason i was there). I emailed the Intern London office though and they must have done something to clear it up, because within a few days my boss at work started going through and planning out a lot more projects for me to contribute to.

Also, the visa cost is a bit expensive, but I guess that's not the company's fault...
