Best Summer Ever! 8 weeks in Tokyo

My program coordinators, Alisha & Erika were the absolute best. Everything under TIG was fantastic. Best internship I could have asked for and there were always fun events to attend through the intern group. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to do an international internship. I was an intern at an architecture firm for 8 weeks. The only thing I wish I could have changed is how far I lived from my office. The commute was tough at times but honestly I don’t have really anything negative to say.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have chosen housing that was closer to my place of employment.
Pros
  • Community
  • Culture
  • Friendships

Fantastic experience!

The Intern Group was great in facilitating internships abroad! My destination trip was Madrid, where I stayed for 6 weeks, and I can't emphasize enough how life-changing the experience was. Lalita and Nikte were extremely supportive and ensured the needs of all interns were met.

Overall, I've made some amazing friends and got exactly the type of work experience I was looking for. If you're thinking of applying to build your resume or make long-lasting friends/memories, I highly recommend it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Plan an itinerary before travelling! There's so much to do, it can be overwhelming at times.
Pros
  • Great food
  • Late nights, most people don't sleep
  • Get to make friends from across the wrold
Response from The Intern Group

Thank you for reviewing your time in Madrid, Anisa! It's so amazing to hear how supportive you found Lalita and Nikte to be, and that you found the experience life-changing. We're really excited to see what's next for you in your career!

8 week program in Madrid

I had such an amazing experience in Madrid this summer. I loved the company I was working for and I learned so much about my field, both in general and in an international context. It was super easy to make friends with other interns. The social events set up by TIG gave us the opportunity to not only explore the city and adjacent towns, but also build a community with other interns. I could not have been more satisfied with my experience and I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in international travel.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
There were definitely moments where the language gap was frustrating, especially in moments where I needed to understand what was going on around me. However because of the friendships I made with fellow interns, it was easier to overcome
Pros
  • Learned the language
  • Developed professionally
  • Enjoyed the city as a local
Cons
  • Unpaid work
  • Expensive
  • Lonesome at times

Amazing experience, highly recommend!

The experience itself was amazing - Madrid is an incredible city, especially for younger people.

First and foremost, the team at TIG is splendid. Extremely kind and supportive. As an intern, I felt like I barely took care of any logistics, as everything was taken care of for me, and any issues that I faced I was supported throughout. Big thank you to Lalita for all her help while I was here, when I needed anything. And also a big thank you to Nikte, event coordinator, who planned fun and unique events and was also there to listen if we needed any help. Truly enjoyed meeting both of them!

Transport system is great and extremely cheap compared to other cities (8 euros for a month of bus/metro pass). So much culture, art, food, dance, etc. In a city like this you really have to immerse yourself to live the best experience. So if you are someone that loves culture and exploring, you will love Madrid. Everything is so close if you live in the center, max 15 minute walk to almost everything.

Only feedback I would give to future interns is actually just a disclaimer - the summer here is very hot (but manageable, as it is dry warmth), and travelling outside of Madrid is at its peak in terms of how expensive it gets to travel in Europe!

Again, I would highly recommend and will look back at this experience with a sense of gratitude, not only for the professional skills and insights I gained but also for the amazing time I had in Madrid, meeting great people, learning new things, and growing personally.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
SO MUCH JÁMON!!
Pros
  • Sunny
  • Walkable city
  • Cheap
Cons
  • Heat
  • Expansive to travel
  • Work location quite far from accom

A supported journey into the Japanese work force.

My internship was a 6 month program in a non-TIG accommodation. The advisors were down to earth people, always available, and very helpful. My internship was an IT based one. I really enjoyed the company I worked at. All of my coworkers were very accommodating and I had a healthy work-life balance. Outside of the internship, there were many events that TIG hosted, including welcome parties for new Interns once or twice a month, going to landmarks in and around Tokyo, and outings to the nearby Kanagawa prefecture. I got along well with my fellow interns within the program and we also organized doing our own explorations of Tokyo. My only complaint is that the program fees are a little expensive, but if money is no a problem, I would whole-heartedly recommend this program to anyone looking to gain work experience in Tokyo or broaden their international perspective.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Tokyo is what you make of it. It is big enough that there probably is a shop or attraction for whatever niche hobby you may have. Personally, I have a keyboard hobby and was able to find a hobbyist keyboard shop in Akihabara. I built and modded my own keyboard with their own specialty switch. I think it's the most personalized 'Tokyo Souvenir' I could ever get and something I can use forever into the future.
Pros
  • A very safe location with great public transportation.
  • Plenty of opportunities for weekend activities.
  • Food is cheap and delicious.
Cons
  • Program fees are expensive.
  • Depending on where your accommodation is, commute time could be 1hr+
  • Personally did not experience, but I know some interns may have had problems with their accommodations (loud neighbors/dirty common areas)
Response from The Intern Group

Best 8 Weeks!!!

I have wanted to come to Japan since I was a kid and was over the moon to be able to visit while also interning for a company that is in the field I want to pursue. This program was absolutely amazing. I felt supported throughout the entire process and always had a helping hand when I needed it. I am very grateful for Erika as she always checked in on me and made sure I was succeeding personally and professional throughout the program. Overall, I rate this experience a 5/5 because I was able to explore Tokyo to my heart's content while also learning so much at my internship. If you are considering joining this program, please do!

Pros
  • Cultural immersion
  • Great food
  • Easy transportation

Great Time in London

I really enjoyed my 10-week internship program in London. I appreciate that TIG checked in on me periodically to make sure I was ok. They regularly sent updates of things going on and things to do in London. Their staff responded promptly whenever I contacted them (before and during my internship). I also liked the three events that were offered as part of my program.

The internship itself ultimately went well, though I wasn’t happy with it at first. I expected more structure and mentoring. I think those things would’ve made this a more effective internship. The people at the company were great; it’s just that the way things were done was a bit chaotic. However, I still gained so much from the experience. I was pushed out of my comfort zone (for the better), tried new things, and was able to make a difference at the company. My experience made me more confident and capable, and it helped me get a job in a new career field.

The professional and internship preparation resources offered by TIG were helpful and interesting. However, I was disappointed that they did not follow through on the alumni success coaching session as promised after my internship.

Overall, I had a wonderful time in London. I did pretty much everything I wanted to do, and my time there helped me grow personally and professionally. I’m so late with this since my internship was from the end of November 2023 to the beginning of February 2024, but thank you for everything, TIG!

Response from The Intern Group

However, we're sorry to hear about the alumni success coaching. Someone will be in contact with you soon directly about it, should you still want to partake in this. We wish you all the best in your career!

Amazing Experience!

The Intern Group program was an amazing experience! I was in Madrid, Spain for 8 weeks and I learned so much about the culture and the language. I have always wanted to go to Spain, and I’m so glad i found this program. They provided a remote internship to me so I was able to travel around Spain and other parts of Europe. The people within the program were so friendly and so fun. I met so many new friends. This was an experience I will never forget and would love to do again. I highly recommend The Intern Group!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
When in Valencia, I ate “Conejo” which is Rabbit, in my Paella.

Tokyo Intern Review

I loved interning with TIG in Tokyo!! There were so many opportunities to meet new people and interns and experience new cultures, places, and food. Help was always there when I needed it and they made sure that everything was going well with my company as well, and even work ended up being a really fun experience! I loved exploring over the weekend trying new foods and going to parks/temples and other unique exhibitions that are only in Tokyo. Overall I would definitely recommend it!!!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would definitely plan better spending wise and exploring wise! there are so many cities and places to experience and shop around tokyo and its really easy to spend multiple weeks exploring just one or two, so I would definitely have wanted to plan to go to more places and see the sights!!
Pros
  • Cheap food
  • Easy transportation
  • Excusions / Meet ups with Interns
Cons
  • Lots of walking in the heat!
  • accommodation may be small
