Greatest four months you could ask for

Didn't know what I had gotten myself into when I first signed up to the course. Now having completed it I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences I have had in the past 6yrs of travelling the globe. learnt many new sills as well as developing some very essential life skills that transfer to multiple situations and industries. Can't fault the course in any way. If you are thinking about doing it, don't hesitate and jump in. You wont regret it.

The best experience of my life

I had recently left school in May 2015 and was looking for a worthwhile gap year which would give me some sort of qualification. I could have never predicted the change this course would have to my life. I feel as though it made me a more productive, responsible and well balanced individual. It doesn't matter whether you think you're already all of those things, this course will change you for the better in every way possible. I cannot recommend this course enough. The best experience of my life.

What would you improve about this program?
We did a lot of traveling around to get to different places to do different things. I felt at times that we did more traveling than we did activities. Got to put in the mileage to get to the destination though.

BEST 2 MONTHS EVER

This was the best two months of my life so far and I loved every minute of this trip. If I could give any advice to someone considering taking a gap year or gap semester, DO IT!! It was the best decision I have made regarding my education and I would even recommend going for longer.

I grew to become very independent and made some memories i will never forget. I saw the most amazing sights and experienced things I never thought possible. I kayaked in the Galapagos Islands, fed monkeys and ocelots, hiked a volcano, taught children english, and met some of the most genuine and incredible people ever. The nights out were so much fun and now I can never think of karaoke the same way again.

Our group leaders were incredible and don't get enough credit (or money) for their hard work.

The part that made this trip unforgettable was the people on it. I have never been so comfortable with a group of people and I love every single person on the trip. I made lifelong friends that I will never forget and we have already started planning a reunion for next year! never forget #johncena #momsspaghetti #glockinmyrari <3

THANKS GAPFORCE FOR A TRIP OF A LIFETIME

What would you improve about this program?
Sorry, but every trip has its problems....
Our group leaders, Joe and Jamie were amazing and don't get paid enough for what they do. Jamie had to leave halfway through the trip due to a problem with his visa in Ecuador and Joe had to supervise all 13 kids on the trip which I imagine was quite difficult. They didn't get enough credit for their hard work and everything they had to deal with.

Secondly, the food budget was a joke. We were promised 3 meals a day, but the budget for most places was $10 which was no where close to what we needed. I spent way more of my own money than I was expecting, since we were told it was all included. Also we were promised a Gapforce t-shirt which none of us ever received, and since Gapforce was in such a rush for us to pay them, i expected to at least get a t-shirt (ha ha).

My last improvement would be to actually tell us what we're doing. A lot of the time none of us had any idea what was going on and we weren't told anything. We didn't even get the trip itinerary until the second week and it was just a calendar with words on it. My parents had no idea where I was most of the time and neither did I. (just kidding) But kidding aside, take more care in your organization. ESPECIALLY in the Galapagos, that was a MESS. Gapforce wouldn't pay for our leader to come so we had a random "leader" that we never saw and would take us to "dinner" which was just someones house, and then leave every night. We didn't do half the things promised, it was an unorganised disaster.

One thing I would recommend to Gapforce is to spend less time in the Amazon. Although it was amazing, the second week in the animal sanctuary felt more like a routine than anything else. We were bored doing the same thing every day and wanted to move on. We would have liked to spend more time in Banos or Lima, since we spent one day in Lima and saw NOTHING. Considering it is a capital city with a lot of history, i think we should have seen more.

The Shuar tribe was NOT AT ALL what I was expecting. It's not so much a tribe, but a community of Ecuadorians who wore normals clothes and loved to offer to take us places so we would pay for their taxis. The ONLY time we interacted with them was when they played soccer with us on the last night so we would buy their jewelry. Also they barely fed us so we went into the nearby town to buy food. It might be a good idea to cut this part out of the trip or go to a more traditional tribe.
Response from Gapforce

Hi Charlotte,

Thank you for your review and we are delighted that you had a great time on our South America trip during your gap year. Your feedback is really important to us so we can better understand our customer needs and make amendments to our programs where necessary.

I am pleased that you found our leaders incredible. The quality of our leaders is something we pride ourselves on. Joe and Jamie have both completed our rigorous Expedition Leader Training Course to make them the best at what they do! Jamie has now led groups with us for around 3 years and we're very proud of the work our leaders do.

I'm sorry you didn't feel enough information was provided to you regarding your itinerary. We aim to provide a thorough and complete Information Pack before signing up, as well as access to our online portal pre-departure, where you can access documents about the program. We also organise a webinar briefing about a month before departure with further information about your program and itinerary. Nevertheless we will be taking all of these comments on board for an internal review of any areas we can provide more real-time information to our participants and their parents.

I'm also sorry to hear that you didn't receive your Gapforce t-shirt! I have checked our records to find that it was sent about a month in advanced from our UK office to your location in the US. In case it got lost on route and you would still like a Gapforce t-shirt, please don't hesitate to email us at info@gapforce.org and we'll get a new one sent out to you!

Our South America trip is a very popular trip that has now been running for years, and we will be using your feedback to help us improve it even further.

Best wishes, the Gapforce team.

Summer on Andros

i had the most amazing experience on this conservation trip to Andros! everyday held something knew and we were kept busy doing various activities that were the opposite to boring, the diving especially was unbelievable and learning about the island and all the fish was really interesting. it was also nice to get away from all the luxury and experience living in beautiful remoteness. the people volunteering and all the staff were so friendly and made the trip unforgettable. All i can say is that my time was not at all long enough!

so glad i made this trip

I had an amazing experience of a lifetime. I would do it 100 more times if i could!

I met lovely and interesting people who impacted my life in incredible ways.

For me one the exciting memories was our trip to Mancora. The view was spectacular and I had a ball on the jet skies!

South America is an incredible continent and offers a diverse cultural experience. The program is structured in a manner which allowed us to experience these cultures in a way that I would never have been able to experience.

The coordinators, Jaimie and Joe were very professional, well organized and caring. For me, this was the first away from home without my family and being in a country so different from my comfort zone, they went out of their way to settle me in and looked out for me....and all the members of the group. They were really key in making the trip absolutely awesome.

Advise to future attendees: make sure you are fit and bring a lot of bug spray!!!!!!

Bahamas 2015

This trip is utterly faultless. I have never been the company of such amazing people doing things that I love. The staff on the phase were brilliant with a huge font of knowledge about the oceans and environment surrounding us. The equipment we used was top of the range, and I felt safe when in the water. The sea life that I was so lucky to see was amazing, from Caribbean reefs sharks to Loggerhead turtles, the Bahamas had it all. Andros, being such a remote island, had a create sense of community, with locals being friendly and generous with their possessions. The social life was great with 'Timmy's bar' being a 30 second walk from the house. We also went to such events like the Islands regatta which was a great way of embracing the culture that Andros so strongly expressed. The living conditions were great taking into account the remoteness of the Island. If you like rice and noodles this trip is the one for you. Overall I had the best 5 weeks and couldn't have asked for better people to spend it with.

Great trip for those looking for a real adventure

This is a trip that's not like 'normal' travel companies will dare provide. It's a real adventure with a real challenge and no safety net! Something to really build the character.

If I take away one story it'll be when the rope bridge over the raging river collapsed when we were half way across and an hour after it was dark, in the driving rain, the resourcefulness and braveness of the group leaders were able to get us all across to the local plantation...

What would you improve about this program?
Everyone on the trip were unsure about the kit to take. It seems there were several kit lists that were sent around and all of us bought something were told later wasn't required. I think this was a mix up in the office.

This is a very tough trip and nobody ever asked about general health or fitness. I'm generally quite fit but found this trip very tough having not done much fitness related for a month or two.

The trip was three weeks, roughly two of which were on the trip and one at 'field camp' which is probably not the most hospitable place in the world, but it's there to prepare you for the trip ahead. The training there could easily have been done in far less time (not withstanding we had to spend an extra day there because the local guide missed his bus). It felt like we spent less than half the time there learning anything - and that could often have been done better.

Another day or two on the Carribean side after the trek would have been great (I know we missed a day because the local guide missed the bus).

Sorry if this sounds like a moany list - it really isn't - I had a great time - I went looking for adventure after finding that most similar trips nanny you a little too much - and this felt very, very real - exactly what I was after!

Truly unforgettable experience!

This trip really has been one of the best experiences of my life! The last 3 months in paradise it has been truly amazing! The diving is so beautiful and learning so much more about the reefs and marine life in the oceans around Andros makes it so exciting and special, learning more about conservation and the protection of our reefs is inspirational and really does open your eyes! I've met some amazing people who I know will be friends for life! The staff are hard working and supportive and so easy to get along with really making you feel at home and putting in everything to make sure you get the best out of your time here on Andros! It really has been an incredible experience and one I will never forget! I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in this project it is an adventure of a life time and you will love every single minute of it!

Life changing!

Choosing to do this project is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I've been put in touch with like minded people who i know will be friends for life, I've dived 5 times a week for 3 months and seen some unforgettable things and I've learned so much about how I can contribute to the protection of vulnerable places like Andros. It really has been an eye opener. I had incredible support from the staff all throughout my dive training and marine biology lectures and I have thoroughly enjoyed applying that knowledge to such an important cause. Life on camp shows you how comfortably you can live without luxury and encourages you to be resourceful and think outside the box. I've loved every minute of this experience and am so glad to be continuing on as an intern. Andros is a very special place and Greenforce is an amazing project that I would recommend to anyone!

An encounter with a Caribbean Reef Shark

It was afternoon by the time the second group set out to go diving. The sun was shining, and see sparkled in the afternoon sunlight. It was hot and humid, and clouds were lining the horizon. We kitted up and loaded everything into the motorboat, and as we undid ourselves from the boje, four very excited volunteers were lying on the front deck. As we approached the dive site (I believe it was Aladdin's) the wind was tousling our hair and a sudden feeling of happiness erupted in everyone. A smile spread across my face as I felt a deep inner enjoyment and content. The sea was calm so we threw in our BCDs and hopped in with our fins and masks to put everything on in the water. As everyone swam to each other Chloe gave the signal and we slowly descended. You felt almost as if you were floating, weightless. The warm water encased you as you started swimming with only board shorts and a rash vest. As we rounded up around Chloe we all got our dive slates out and began the coral point out. Everyone seemed very confident after the last lecture in the morning and some hours to practice. Chloe showed her amazement and joyfulness by giving us energetic thumbs up ever time we identified a given coral correctly. Like this half an hour drifted by seamlessly. I was just watching Chloe when I saw her eyes focus on something in the distance. I swivel around and am astonished to see a Caribbean Reef Shark swimming by silently. You could see the awe stricken faces of all volunteers, and the coral point out was momentarily forgotten as we all watched with wonder this amazing creature of the ocean. As it started to swim away we went after it in hot pursuit until it disappeared in the distance and blended in with the turquoise blue of the warm water. As we ascended to the the safety stop Theo and Lukas were finally able to fool around, they played around by snatching Chloe's fins and taking off her boots. This ended up being a mad chase in circles until the three minutes were over and we were able to surface. As we inflated our BCDs we all erupted in laughter and Chloe had big smile on her face when she said: "You guys were awesome. You knew your corals inside out, and that dive really made my day!" We finished up that great dive with jumps off the boat and swim around before we headed back home to camp.

What would you improve about this program?
I believe it was overall an amazing experience, but you could change some housekeeping things such as having somewhere to wash your feet before stepping into the house, to keep the sand from accumulating and thereby the sandflies from hatching.
