Mexico Conservation Turtle Camp

From start to finish this company were very accommodating, non pushy, friendly & informative. The cost covered mostly EVERYTHING, meaning delicious food, insurance, transfers, staff, places we stayed, equipment we used.
The staff are all extremely friendly, professional & all care for there roles/positions a lot, which was refreshing to see! I went on the mexico conservation turtle camp in April 2019 & it is something i will never forget! I got to share the wonderful experience with my two best friends & my 11 year old son, which was very special to me as they could accommodate for children to go!

What did we do on the trip?
We cleaned the large turtles, baby turtles (cute!) feed the iguanas, cleaned the tanks, painted a wall, moved sand off a beach, planted mangroves, sunbathed on hammocks by the pool & our beach house (heaven!) had a bonfire & gazed at the stars, collected turtle eggs on quad bikes on night patrols & let the hatchling baby turtles into the sea! this is to mention just some of the incredible things we did! It was something i will never forget & touched my heart.

I am now a brand ambassador for projects abroad & very proud to be part of a brilliant team, hoping to go on lots of school fairs & talks & to travel more & work along side the team with some ideas to help the save the planet & environment.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Get involved, ask questions, be in the moment! leave the UK life behind & enjoy nature & your experience! Make it change you for the better.

Put down your phone, avoid WIFI & life back home, switch off & be present as much as possible.

Remember how lucky you are to help these animals & there habitat.

Appreciate all that the staff do to make you happy & enjoy the sunshine & sunsets!

School volunteer/feeding program

I’ve already been to Kenya before I traveled with Projects Abroad, but it was still a new way of seeing the country.
The staff in Nanyuki are the best, sweetest, professional, funny and most friendly people I’ve ever met. They help you with everything and they make you feel welcome from day one.
It’s a good experience to live with a host family and you feel more like home because you’re part of a Kenyan family.
I did my volunteer program in a school where there was a feeding program. We played and made creative things with the kids, and every time I go to Kenya, I go visit the school and the kids and it’s so nice. I did my volunteering with a girl from Italy, and today we are very good friends who still meet up and we traveled back to Kenya together after the program was over. So all in all it was an amazing experience and I’ve made friends for life all over the world. I can only recommend people to go with Projects Abroad and see the world.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
How friendly the Kenyan people are! They are so helpful

My wonderful experience in Belize

Two years ago I went to Belize to help with the eco-volunteering and the environment project. I keep thinking about it so I finally decided to post a review to share with others!

I discovered beautiful landscape and underwater landscape, I discovered a culture, certainly very different from mine but so rewarding, I met people with smiles so radiant that they continue to spark in my memory even Two years later. The project taught me so much: firstly, teamwork, friendship and sharing, and secondly, I learned how to care for the seabed, seaweeds, beaches and people. I would love to restart over again, in an other country with an other linguage and culture. The only negative thing I experienced was the relation I had with one guy from the staff. But overall it was amazing !

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Find out about the country you chose and just be mentally ready for the shock ! (In a positif way !)

AN INCREDIBLE AND UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

Hi everyone, my name is Luca and I am a young 19 year old who lived an unforgettable adventure last summer that has changed many of my certainties.
I left Parma to go to the other side of the world, literally, to the Fiji Islands where I spent 5 weeks with the project of environmental conservation and protection of sharks managed by Project Abroad.
The organization of the pre-departure run by the project staff, the personal online page that gave me all the answers and dedicated phone calls helped me to prepare well for this adventure, maybe even too much since my parents didn't miss a single line of the recommended material finding myself so super equipped with everything.
The start saw me ready, equipped and a little anxious about what was waiting for me but full of energy and curiosity.
On arrival I found assistance at the airport for the first necessities and I was escorted to the bus stop that would take me along the last leg of my journey to get to the Pacific Harbor project site.
The beginning, like all the beginnings I believe, found me a bit out of phase with 11 hours of time zone to dispose of, lots of people to meet between staff and other volunteers, spaces to explore rules to learn, different food to try.
The first impact was strong, the atmosphere of the place immediately infected me and the voices around me told me about all those countries of origins that seemed to me so many: China, America, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, England, Japan and others.
The first phase of the project was the achievement for me of the diving license and already here I can say that I discovered what I hope will remain a great passion for my whole life, I fell in love with the marine world, the thrill of diving, the possibility to discover incredible things and fantastic animals at each dive.
It seems to be in another world completely alien but indescribable, some have had problems with the first approach to the diving experience, but for me it was as if I had always done it, no fear or hesitation, just calm and serene wonder .
At the beginning of the journey that led me to choose this experience, I was thinking only of doing something in the scientific field that would help me to know and understand better what I wanted for my future path of university studies, I was perplexed and a little worried about the part of volunteering in the villages or schools, on the environmental part, worried about finding myself living in an area so different from the protected and comfortable one of my house.
I could not have been more mistaken, certainly I do not want to say that it was all rosy, but the knowledge that with my hard work I was helping to preserve this wonderful environment, I helped people who welcomed us with joy, always cheerful but smiling above all really grateful for everything we did, it made me feel useful and important.
Of course I also experienced unpleasant situations such as missing the initial briefing, due to the change in my arrival flight, group punishments without my real responsibilities that penalized me in the dives, rudeness of some volunteers who, although not signing up, got meals and took part in them, filling the plates and leaving the regularly marked ones without dinner, but in conclusion the positive aspects were so many exceeding by far the negative ones.
I have made friends that I hope will last over time with wonderful people from all over the world, I discovered what I can do and in some cases what my limits are, I discovered in myself an immense love for the marine world and the environment that inspired me and made me realize important things about my future university career and about who I would like to become in the working world, I lived in a world and a culture very different from mine but full of charm and interest.
In short, I changed, matured and I had a great time doing it.
My goal for this last school year that begins ... to save in order to return in the summer to live another experience like this in another part of the world!

Nursing Internship Peru

I did the Nursing Internship in Cusco to decide whether I wanted to peruse a career in nursing or public health. Though it didn’t make my decision any easier it was still one of the most incredible experiences of my life! I felt like I gained more exposure here than I would at a health care facility in the States while feeling totally immersed in the culture. I had a wonderful host family (though I heard some complaints from others about their families. Some, however, were for cultural differences and other complaints were similar to ones you might hear from a son or daughter about their parent lol). I also felt that I had plenty of time to travel and good people to travel with. The people who work with Projects Abroad have plenty of gathering opportunities. They also host workshops based on your field, so I was able to do a suture workshop at the office! No regrets and no hesitations of doing it again!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Stay as long as you can! I was there for 5 weeks and I wish I would have done a least 3 months! Try as many programs as you can! I did nursing but wish I would have dabbled in English or archeology.

Project in Argentina

My trip to Argentina was great. I highly suggest having conversational Spanish because it will give you more opportunities while you're there. Cordoba is a beautiful city, and there are a variety of things to do there. Projects abroad happily accommodate to your needs. I wanted a very hands off experience, so I didn't interact too much with the staff. Every interaction I had, however, was very positive and they pointed me to interesting activities and locations in the city and Argentina. Working at the hospital let me see medicine first hand, something that's nigh impossible in the US until you're over 18. I spoke Spanish well enough that I was able to form relationships with the staff their that allowed me to help with some of patient care as well.

Hi Evan,

Amazing experience

My experience in Nepal was one of the best of my life. I volunteered at a centre for children with disabilities, wich is a hard but rewarding task, also my own choice there is a lot of other stuff you can do. I was able to do what i was good at and also stepped out of my comfort zone. Projects abroad organized a lot of fun stuff to do with all the volunteers and I got to meet so many amazing people! They also have great info to prepare yourself for the journey. And when things got hard or difficult i could always call Them, and they never failed to respond quickly when i got into Trouble (me and another volunteer got lost on a hike and they send people to save us haha). It is a slightly more expensive organisation but worth every Penny. I felt prepared, safe and cared for. I got to expierence so much. Would not hesitate to travel with Them again.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Me and another volunteer went on a hike. At the end of IT there was supposed to be a small town with a bus stop and a bus back to Kathmandu. There however was not, and it started rain and thunder started as well. A few locals (in the 7 words of english they knew) wanted to call us a taxi. But we were out of money (bad preparation on our part) . So we called projects abroad and they sent someone in a jeep to come pick us up.

Janneke, wow! Thank you for your incredible review. Projects Abroad and the local community really appreciate your hard work towards the Care project in Nepal. We’re here anytime to help you organise your next meaningful adventure.

Shark Conservation Program

I was a volunteer on the Shark Conservation Program in Fiji for six weeks during summer 2019. It was something I had been looking forward to for a very long time. I hoped it would be as great as I pictured it in my mind, I can tell you now... it was even better.
First, the program itself: you have a fun filled week with loads of different activities that help the environment. You work in mangroves, go on shark tagging trips, process data, have cultural experiences and of course you go diving in one of the most beautiful locations you will ever see.
Second, the staff: the project's staff is amazing. Every one of them is not only very skilled at what they do, but also extremely kind. They listen to your needs and you can always come to them when you have a question.
Third, the other volunteers: these people will become like your family. Because you spend so much time together, it only takes a little while for you to become very close. There are a lot of activities that you can do together in the weekend and nights.
Fiji is an amazing place to be and this project is absolutely amazing. I would recommend it to everyone with an interest in diving and conservation.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Just go for it.
Put your best effort into everything you do at this project. This way you will get the most out of it. It will truly be amazing.

Human rights and law volunteering SA

I have never experienced anything quite like this in my life! I went to the human rights and law volunteering in summer, 2018 and it's incredible how big of an impact those 2 weeks can have. As someone who had never been to africa before, let alone Cape Town, it was an opportunity to see the different lifestyles and cultures of a new country. What surprised me the most was the religious and cultural diversity in Cape Town. We stayed with a host family for the 2 weeks with around 10 other volunteers and occasionally had our meals together. During our time there, we went to court and witnessed a man on trial for a rape case, went into parliament, were separated into 2 groups and had to solve a real-life murder case which had happened a few years back, met some volunteers from another school and practiced debating with them, amongst many other things. These experiences were incredible and I am so lucky to have been able to practice skills like these which I know will be essential for my future. During our spare time, our supervisors took us to see the cultural sites of Cape Town including the table mountain, the gangster museum, the parliament, robben island, the water front, boulders beach, and muizenburg beach where we were taught how to surf. we also had volunteering days once a week. The first week we went to a primary school where there were about 30 children and cooked for them, painted the outside of the building as it was worn away and played, sang and danced with the kids. The following week was womens day, so we held an event for all women who were previously imprisoned and painted their nails, gave them hand massages, brought food for them . From these 2 weeks, I made friends for life who although I only knew for 2 weeks have become some of my closest friends. I have learnt so much from this experience and done things which could not be possible without this volunteering program and would without any hesitation, recommend this program to everyone, regardless of whether or not you want to study law in the future.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
On our last day, we went to a South African restaurant and ate springbok, ostrich and another kind of meat which I had never tried before but they insisted we try as it was a traditional dish.

7 months at 17

I went on a teaching project, based just out side of Hanoi. I arrived to the sweltering heat of 5.30am. On arrival British Airlines, forgot to place my bag on the airplane. But luckily the kind, staff member(Vieat), was able to set the matter straight. We then took a taxi back into the main city. The taxi smelled like pineapple.
When we stopped in the street that I soon would love and trust. Making are way through the back streets, we arrive at my new home. Everyone was gone on a day trip, so unpacking was easy. Later Vieat & I got sticky rice for breakfast, it tasted like cardboard.
I spent that morning sitting up on the closed balcony, waiting for people to come back.
Their was a lot of people, in that 4 story house through my time. 5 Australians, 3 American, 4 British, 1 French & 1 Italian.
Everyone was told to use Grab, the Uber of Vietnam. You could get a bike or a car what ever your mood. I mostly got the bike, it was a lot cheaper. Also a super fun way of seeing the city.
Yet I would get the car to the Kindergarten, for their was 2 of us traveling each day.
I was brought to the Kindergarten on my 3 day in Vietnam. The kids quickly began to listen & understand me, through my very helpfully translators. The kids were amazing, all different interests. One boy was fascinated by animals. So I began to show them Google Earth, they were mesmerized.
On my time in Vietnam, I made friends with 2 Swiss girls. Also with their host Mum. We visit many places outside of Hanoi together. Their host Mum, often invited me for dinner.
The thing I took most from the trip was, kindness. I saw it in every aspect of my time there.

So thank you Projects Abroad, for giving me memories and a passion to travel more.

What was your funniest moment?
It had to be the time when I had no translator. So in good hopes, I used Google Translate. The kids & I would have fun trying to understand each other.
