Care and Community High School Special

I spent 2 weeks in Nepal volunteering in a school. My volunteer programme was part of the high school specials. I would recommend this for anyone who is interested in taking part in a volunteering programme but is nervous about it. The staff were amazing and made sure you were never put into situations you were uncomfortable with. This trip was my first time in Asia, so the culture shock was a bit scary, but thanks to the staff I felt as if I settled in nicely and by the end of the trip I didn't want to leave! Once you get to understand the culture, you'll love it.
The first week in the school we helped to rejuvenate some of the rooms to make it a nicer working environment from the children. This was so much fun as we got to make our own designs for the classrooms. In the second week we ran some classes for the children. All of the kids were so enthusiastic and their mentality towards education was inspiring.
The weekend in between we went to Pokhara which was beautiful. It was a long drive but definitely worth it. As soon as you get there you can tell the air is so much cleaner than in Kathmandu. They took us to temples and to waterfalls, it was stunning.
Overall, I absolutely loved my experience with ProjectsAbroad in Nepal, the only downside to it was that I only had two weeks there!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Stay for longer! Or do some solo travelling of the country after. If you are a keen traveller, the only downside of the programme is that you don't get to explore the country as deeply as you may like as are in the city volunteering most of the time. So if I were to do it again, I would definitely go off and explore the country after.

One month marketing internship in Shanghai

I spent one month immersed in Shanghai living the Chinese way of life and it was one of the best moments of my life. I learned a lot in terms of working in China and it gave me the opportunity to meet new people that remain my friends today! My roommates and I got along perfectly. The housing provided was ideally located, close enough to my work place and to metro stations from which you could access any part of the city easily. The staff members were amazing with everyone and were always available for us, organising group activities, advising us on what to do during our free time, etc. Although I didn't learn a lot during the internship itself, it was a great addition to my CV and an experience people are always curious about during my work interviews.
I highly recommend Projects Abroad if you are looking for a professional experience abroad!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would take Mandarin lessons in parallel in order to be able to communicate more easily with Chinese people on a daily basis. Everyone spoke perfect English at work, but outside work was a completely different story... But we had many hilarious moments trying to understand Chinese people and be understood by them!

Vietnam

The best experience of my life! The staff were so supportive and friendly, they made the experience so enjoyable. I loved the mix of activities between culture and the school, allowing both a fun and rewarding experience that allowed me to fully embrace such a new and different culture. For example, we visited places such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Museum of Ethnology and the night market, not forgetting the weekend trip to HaLong Bay. We had so much support for our work in the school, with our project coordinators providing materials and helping plan the funday. The language barrier held some difficulties but the projects abroad team were great, they provided translators so each class had someone who could communicate better with the children. I have already planned my next trip with Projects Abroad!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
To fully embrace the whole experience, especially the food as you will get so much more out of your trip.

Care and Community High School Special

Before arriving, I was nervous, apprehensive but very excited! As soon as I landed I was greeted by Projects Abroad staff who welcomed me into the country and gave me a short tour around Thamel.
The placement was amazing, we painted several school buildings and even taught the children some basic maths and English (as well as some fun games!)
I went on a High School Special trip to Nepal, so we had a weekend visit organised for us. We visited Pokhara and it was very enjoyable (except the 7 hour bus journey...)
Our Projects Abroad co-ordinators, Chris and Sujan, were both extremely welcoming and made our trip the experience of a lifetime! Projects Abroad organised a full itinerary for the trip, and we were safe and well looked after 24/7.
We stayed in a hotel which was basic, but clean and had a lovely restaurant.
I’d highly recommend PA to anyone looking for a fulfilling and enjoyable way to volunteer abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
To fully experience Nepal, you must immerse yourself in the culture and remember you’ll only be there for two weeks, so you must enjoy and try everything!

Great experience working in an orphanage

I always wanted to visit another country after school and do some volunteer work there, even if it was only for a few weeks. So I did a research and found that child care program in jamaica by Projects Abroad.
I didn't think it would be such a culture shock when I arrived. It was so colourful and warm (summery temparatures and so many palms and other plants; I went there in winter). And I loved to see a country that was so completely different from what I knew. Life seemed more simple, but at the same time more carefree than in Germany. That experience is something I would recommend to everyone, to visit a culture that is totally new to you. Not only to visit, but also to work there for a little while.
The first three weeks, I worked in a day care center with a school and assisted the teacher. Sadly, it wasn't perfect for me. So I told the team leaders I wanted to work somewhere else, and the last week, I went to work in an orphanage which I liked much better. I had already worked in a kindergarten, so I felt confident doing that and found a good rapport to the children and the staff.
My host family was also very nice. The mother always made my food for me. I shared a room with another volunteer for two weeks, the rest of the time I had it for myself.
Sometimes there where special events for the volunteers like lessons in patois or visiting the places where the other volunteers worked. There was a house where we could always go to and would always meet one or another team leader. That was also our meeting point for activities and weekend trips. On the weekends, the volunteers could independently go where they wanted in Jamaica. I was almost everywhere across the country. We had beach trips as well as trips to the mountains and always stayed in hostels.
Overall, it was a great experience that I would recommend for anyone who wants some adventure, to help others and to really get to know other cultures.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Sadly, the time wasn't perfectly chosen for me. I did have some issues and uncertainities at home at the time, like my dad had died only recently. I went at the planned time anyway and thought maybe I could leave that all behind, but I couldn't. I brought the bad feelings with me and sadly, couln't enjoy it the way I maybe could have if I went there another time.
Also I had bad luck with my group, there were some people I didn't get on too well with. But of course, you can't know that before and either you're lucky or not.
But you should better plan to go at a time when you're happy in your life. Also, if you go in summer, there are usually more volunteers, maybe even someone who speaks your language, and you have a better chance to meet someone you get on well with and don't depend on people you don't like (like for weekend trip destinations).

Hey Eva-Marie,

Thank you for your great review. 2017 must seem a long time ago now!

It was warming to hear about your experience, working with the children must have been so rewarding.

Not to mention travelling around the tropical paradise of Jamaica!

Just so you know, at the end of 2017 we took the decision to stop placing volunteers in orphanages.

On our childcare projects we now only work with community daycare centres, pre-schools and kindergartens.

If you would like to discuss the above, please do get in touch on georgegreen@projects-abroad.org.

Thank you!

George Green.

Excellent project

I loved my psychology project and can't wait to come back! The team were supportive and other volunteers. The facility I worked at has tried so hard to get to where it is now. The clients were all very accommodating, as were staff. I spent my time being treated as a senior member of staff, I attended all MDT meetings and out things in place for the reorganisation. This place has my heart! I can not wait until I am able to return and continue my work with this facility but I will be doing so as an independent so that I can put money into the organisation myself.

I think the project could be improved by the money we pay going into the actual projects we do as while I was there I found the projects don't receive any money at all which seems such a shame considering the price I paid for my project. It would have made such a different for some of that money to go towards my project.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would stay longer!! I stayed for 4 weeks on my placements and an extra 2 weeks to see family. 4 weeks was not enough! I intend to come back for three months to spend on placement independently.

Good learning experience

I can say that this is one of the best experiences inmy lifetime. Dont life in you shell but go out and do something with your life.

The program was allowed to be a internship in my university. The staff at the country helped me alot with al my questions and they showed the country like no tourist will ever see. The housing with the other volunteers was great, everone was friend with each other and we often go out in the city of Phnom Penh.

Some people maybe suggest that this projects are too expensive. You need tot hink that a big amount of the money will be used to hep the people in the country you are working. So i learnedd more and i was able to put a little smile on some faces. If you see those smioles you really now you did something good thatday

What would you improve about this program?
There is nothing to improve in my opinion. Maybe better WIFI to work with ;)

Holiday school teaching in Fiji

In the beginning i was kind of anxious traveling alone to the other side of the world for three weeks to do a project working in a holiday school.

But when i got there and met my host family every anxious thought went away. They were so nice and so where the staff members. I cant describe who much fun i had during the workshop hours with the staff and during the weekend with friends.

One of the main thing i liked was that the projects i worked on where in a school where other volunteers were as well. As well as that my project was only from 9 am to 2 pm and after that we had loads of free time.

Teaching in the holiday school did have a big impact on me, i was teaching children from the age of 10 and 11 but you can see how undereducated they are where you compare it to my country.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I dont think i would change anything, the only thing i can think of is to go for a longer amount of time. I found that three weeks was way too short.

Amazon Rainforest - Peru

My first experience with Projects Abroad was in 2016, when I did a high school project in Cambodia. I absolutely loved it - what a wonderful way to travel and see a country, by giving back to the local community. Travel with purpose has always been important to me, and it brings the opportunity to see more of a country than most tourists.
In June of 2018, I went to the Peru project for a month and absolutely loved every minute of it. I was dirty, sweaty, covered in monkey poo, mosquito bites and bamboo splinters, the showers were cold and tarantulas crawled up the outside of my bathroom fly screen - and yet there was no where else I'd have rather been. It definitely pushed my comfort zone and yet there was just something so magical about the forest. I learnt so much and saw so many beautiful things - I want to go back!

What was your funniest moment?
There was a recently released toucan, Hank, that lived around the lodge - he would break into the kitchen to steal food, nibble people's backs when they were relaxing in hammocks, try to steal lunch from tourists and jump on the mesh ceilings like it was a trampoline. He had such a beautiful cheeky character, and never failed to entertain us!

Hi Kira,

Thanks for leaving such a lovely review. You couldn’t have picked a better project to volunteer on for your second time around. Our team at Taricaya are so dedicated and passionate about the work they do. Out of all our projects this is the one I am busting to do myself the most!

You should be incredibly proud of the work you have put in. There aren’t many people who can say they have contributed so directly to the rehabilitation and sustainability of one of the world’s most vulnerable ecosystems and the species who call it home. I am sure Hank the toucan is very appreciative!

You made good use of your Alumni Discount vouchers volunteering for your second time. If you are ever looking to gear up for another project you have a fresh bunch of vouchers to use, or you can pass them over to a friend!

Keep up the amazing work!

Cheers,

Public Health - Philippines

I travelled to the Philippines with my sister to volunteer in a public health project, we had an amazing time and had the opportunity to see so many aspects of health care that we would never have experienced back home in Australia. We also had the chance to travel on the weekends to nearby islands, which was an awesome way to see the beautiful natural environment of the Philippines.
The staff were extremely helpful and we felt safe and looked after during our travels. Our host family was beautiful and welcoming, and our living space clean and safe. My siater was only 17 but this was not a problem, the staff were supportive of her despite being a minor. We also had the chance to get to know other volunteers and built friendships with them.

Hi Carla,

Thanks for your wonderful feedback!

We’re so glad you and your sister had such an amazing experience in the Philippines and were able to see things that you might not be able to back home. Sounds like this experience has been super handy for your CV!

We’re also so glad to hear about the support from our staff in the Philippines and your host family. Filipinos are some of the friendliest people in the world and it’s so great that you were able to experience this first hand.

Welcome to the Projects Abroad Alumni community Carla, we’d love to have you joining our projects again in the future!

All the best,
