Awesome Program

The program I stayed in was in Zagreb, Croatia. I had an awesome time here, I had the privilege of meeting hospital staff and met incredible people in my program. The food here is amazing! If you're in Zagreb I'd recommend a restaurant called Pri Kralju. It recommended to me by a Bolt driver. Download and use an app called Bolt. It's like Uber or Lyft and you can catch rides here for a fraction of the price, do not take the taxi cabs here. It cost me 40 euros to get a ride from the airport in a cab but going back to the airport I got a ride for about 12 euros in a Bolt. On a positive note, the price for food here is fair and expect to gain some weight while in Zagreb because the food is phenomenal if you know where to look.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park, it's a must see. You can take a bus there. If your budget is more flexible, take a bus down to the coast in Zadar you will NOT regret it.

Best summer ever

This was one of the best experiences I have ever done. I got to see multiple surgeries that I was soooo excited for. And learn of some of the most amazing physicians ever. They were soo welcoming and it such inspirational three weeks. We had excursions as well on the weekend that allowed for the students to bond and get to know each other with every dinners. I truly loved learning from the different departments and specialties I was in. And I would definitely like to do it again if the finances allows! Best summer ever and very valuable insights to the world of medicine

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make sure to will go around and have plans, look at the city. Make a good use of your time there!
Pros
  • Friendly country
  • Good food
  • Loved watching the surgeries
Cons
  • Sometimes it felt like the people in the hospital didn’t want us there
  • Did try to go outside as much
  • People smoke every where

Shadowing in Croatia

Shadowing in Croatia is like no other shadowing you will ever do. The hospitals are filled with so much history and with surgeons that know so much and are always willing to share their knowledge with you. Everyone is really nice and apart from the shadowing the best part of my trip was to walk alone through the city and do some souvenir shopping. I really recommend doing a solo trip that’s going to benefit you in your academic life but also that provides you with enough personal time so that you can make the most of your time there also.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Our city manager took us to some old ruins of a castle in Samobor, Croatia. Apart from the spectacular view the castle provides you it also has an interesting story. On one of the firsts movies Jackie Chan has ever made he fell and cracked his head open in this particular castle. Not only that but he was also taken care of and operated in the hospital I was shadowing in.
Pros
  • Helps you build your resume
  • You gain new friends
  • You get to know and explore a new place
Cons
  • It's quite pricey so you have to have enough money for it
  • You may be a little lost with the native language

Zagreb, Croatia 3 Week Summer Program

This is a great program to jumpstart shadowing hours for aspiring medical professionals. Atlantis offers a wide range of specialties to observe while immersing oneself in Croatian culture. There was lots of time for shadowing, and it was overall well-organized. I had plenty of time to explore Zagreb, which was also a big bonus. I loved how we were in a city with many things to do but also had the option to travel on the weekends and program excursions. My City Manager was amazing; he gave us many great recommendations for travel, food, and relaxation.

Split Croatia May 2024

I had the most amazing time in split Croatia. Throughout my time there I got to shadow in three different specialties, as well as getting to learn the cultural side of Croatia. Our city manager brought us on excursions that exemplified croatian culture as well as being fun for us too I could not recommend this program enough. I also Enjoyed going on little adventures by myself. I felt very safe in Croatia. From shopping around to grabbing a bite to eat, I never felt like my life was In danger. I recommend doing this alone because it really got me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to have the best experience with the best people. I recommend that everyone do this, especially if you’re going into the medical field.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking Moment was the fact that I had to go alone. I was afraid that I wouldn’t make connections, but I was so wrong. I met the most amazing people and learned so much from them.
Pros
  • Shadowing in a different country
  • Getting to meet new people
  • going on adventures that made me more culturally aware
Cons
  • a cockroach fell on me in the shower
  • I wish that we were just given money for breakfast

Atlantis- opportunity of a lifetime

Shadowing doctors in Florence has given me a unique pre-medical profile, as it has been shaped by healthcare systems of multiple cultures. I was given the opportunity to work with multiple departments, with the most engaging doctors, eager to pass on their knowledge. This was a life changing experience, as Italy is a captivating country, from the views to the food to the people. Being a part of the vitality of local florentines, is a niche and irreplaceable experience that I am forever grateful for.

Pros
  • Food
  • Hospital staff
  • Coffee!

Atlantis Experience

The shadowing program I was a part of in Portugal was the perfect experience that both gave me the refreshing aspect of traveling with a group of friends while also consolidating my interest in medicine as a career path that I want to take. What makes Atlantis shadowing so meaningful is the fact that the doctors you are matched with take great enthusiasm and care in getting to meet and describe their daily lives in and out of the hospital with you, giving you a raw and inspirational example you can always look back to.

Pros
  • Many food options
  • Lots of activities to keep you busy
  • Meaningful academic experience
