Spanish and Volunteering with Mente Argentina in Buenos Aires

I spent 3 months in Buenos Aires with Mente Argentina and had a wonderful time! It was my first time travelling alone and they really helped by giving me a structure and support whenever I needed it. I signed up for their Spanish and volunteering programs, both of which were excellent. Mente is good at helping you settle in and feel at home. Their weekly socials are also a great way to meet new people. If you want to go on an adventure but still have support and help close by, this is the place for you. Would definitely recommend!

Pros
  • Constant support
  • Weekly socials
  • Friendly staff

Mente Argentina - Amazing Cultural Experience

Mente Argentina was an incredibly enriching experience that I would recommend to anyone considering living in Argentina or just wants to immerse themselves in Argentinian culture for a few weeks. The registration and enrollment process was seamless and the staff was very responsive and helpful throughout the program.
Intensive Language Program: I participated in Mente Argentina to enhance my Spanish language skills, and it delivered excellently on this front. Classes were conducted almost entirely in Spanish, (even for those with little Spanish skills, instructors do a great job of communicating in Spanish most of the time) fostering an immersive learning environment that was relaxed but professional. All of the instructors were native speakers (and many of them had extensive knowledge of the local socio-political context of Argentina). They all had extensive teaching experience, which helped us grasp complex linguistic nuances. I really enjoyed the small class sizes which allowed for personalized attention and active participation/conversation, making the in-class learning process extremely effective. Though after four hours, my brain was exhausted. While I was only in the language program for a week, I learned about Argentinian history, culture, literature, and politics while also learning a little Spanish along the way!
Cultural Immersion: Beyond the classroom, the Mente program emphasized cultural immersion and offered various cultural activities, such as Mate classes, dance workshops, and guided tours of historic sites, which enriched our cultural knowledge. The Mente-sponsored lunches and other programs were also a bonus and not something I expected but certainly took advantage of! I met some really cool folks from all over the world including the UK, Canada, Australia and other parts of the US. Make sure to take the La Boca tour and the Bike Tour, they were my favorites!! All of the tours that Mente offers were phenomenal and had really knowledgeable tour guides and the best part, they’re free!
DJ Program: By far this was my favorite part of my experience. The instructor for this program was absolutely the best and I could not have asked for a better experience. Though I was only in the DJ program for two weeks, I strongly recommend that you spend a minimum of 4 weeks if you are serious about learning how to be a DJ. Two weeks for me was not enough but it certainly was an experience I will never forget!
Living Arrangements:
This was also one of my favorite aspects of the Mente Program. I stayed in a one-bedroom loft apartment in Recoleta, though I’d recommend rooming with others for the social aspect. The apartment was nice and had everything I needed, best part is it was located near many cafes and restaurants and directly across the street from a laundry mat. The location was convenient too, close to bus and metro stops. I never felt unsafe especially walking around late at night.

What was your funniest moment?
The time I got kicked off the Bus because my Metro card did not have enough money to cover the fare, yeah that was fun!
Pros
  • DJ Program
  • Instructors in the Intensive Language Program
  • Location of where you will stay
Cons
  • Short-term programs are very intensive
  • Little interaction with other Mente participants

Fantastic Way To Experience Buenos Aires

Mente Argentina was instrumental in making my 6-week stay in Buenos Aires a resounding success. I enrolled in the Spanish and Tango programs, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the quality, expertise, professionalism, and flexibility of everyone involved.

I have taken a number of Spanish intensives, and this was by far the best I’ve experienced. They make you speak in Spanish, no matter your level, and they are encouraging without your feeling pressured to perform beyond your capacity. I learned SO MUCH and made friends as well!

The tango was phenomenal. I took private lessons as well as group classes as part of the program, and my teachers were exacting, knowledgeable, and encouraging. I went from an advanced beginner level to true intermediate in only 6 weeks of hard work!

In fact, I had originally planned to stay for 4 weeks but I was having such a great time I added another 2 weeks onto my stay. I was living in a studio apartment in a terrific area - central, quiet, yet near all forms of transit. I felt like I really got the hang of being a “porteño”.

The Mente staff were really helpful - really went above and beyond, even advising me on a trip to Patagonia which was not part of their program. I always felt like I had a resource I could call on, at any time.

I was a little concerned about thinking this was mainly for college-aged or recent college grads, but I found people of all ages in the program and I felt quite comfortable in my mid-sixties with all the folks I met.

In sum - this is definitely the way to start out experiencing a complex city like Buenos Aires on one’s own - with a support team like Mente Argentina behind you!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was surprised that I could get by speaking only (or 80%) Spanish. Because I was hearing it all the time, I was able to “think in Spanish” - admittedly, not very complex thoughts and only in the present tense :) - but I really felt like I was thinking like a Porteño. That was exciting - although it did lead to glitches like inadvertently ordering olives for lunch. Only olives.

Well I rolled with it - it was worth it to feel like a native!
Pros
  • Terrific support with any questions I might have
  • Access to the full range of what Buenos Aires has to offer
  • Every resource Mente made available was really top notch. No wasted time or efforts.
Cons
  • I wish I’d had more time!!!
  • I am glad that I came in at an Advanced Beginner level in both Spanish and Tango. If I’d come in at absolute beginner it might have made for wasted effort just learning the basics.
  • In a way, I could rely so much on the Mente team that I wasn’t thrown back on my own resources completely - that was great but also perhaps a bit of a missed opportunity. But overall it was absolutely the right way to be introduced to Buenos Aires living.

Mente - The greatest host program for Buenos Aires

Mente was absolutely incredible as a host during my stay in Buenos Aires. They were incredibly warm, friendly, and kind, always going out of their way to ensure I had the best experience possible. I never felt lost or out of touch with what was happening in the city, thanks to their continuous updates and recommendations. They also organized some truly exciting tours and activities for me, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to my time in Buenos Aires. Moreover, the Spanish classes they arranged for me were incredibly engaging and effective, leading to significant improvement in my language skills. Thank you Mente, I had the best time with you.

Te Quiero, Mente

My experience with Mente was wonderful, especially as someone who is mid-career--they helped to arrange my trip to accommodate this fact so that not only did it run smoothly but I had plenty of opportunities to meet others in the program during the weekly cultural events, which were a highlight for me. It was also nice to be able to adapt my Spanish lessons, and the availability of the program coordinators helped me to feel truly taken care of. Thank you, Mente, for making my experience in Buenos Aires!

A Wonderful Experience

I spent two weeks in Buenos Aires doing the intensive Tango course and added Spanish course and had a wonderful time. The program was perfectly organized by Mente, with members of staff always available to answer questions or help out. The accommodation they had put me in was very centrally located, within walking distance from the Tango studio and just a short subway ride from the language school. Mente also organized weekly events with other Mente students, which was a lot of fun and a great way to make friends. The Tango classes were a lot of fun, yet challenging at the same time. The teacher was friendly and supportive, and I got lots of practice. The Spanish lessons were also very good, I felt like after a week, I was able to say quite a lot (the groups change quite a lot though, and the teachers too, so it can get a bit repetitive).
In short, this Mente program was very interesting and great value for money.

Mente Argentina Volunteer Program Review

I joined Mente Argentina for a two month volunteer program combined with Spanish lessons, and I can confidently say it was truly an amazing opportunity.

For starters, Mili and Sam, both of whom got me set up when I first got to Buenos Aires, were kind, welcoming, responsive, and made sure that I had everything I needed throughout the duration of the program. They both put in so much work every day to make these programs fun, interesting, and eye-opening for everyone involved. Mente additionally puts on weekly activities for all of its participants, where individuals can get to know one another and create community. I would strongly recommend that everyone go to as many of these as possible, as it is a great way to meet new people and explore areas of the city that you aren’t as knowledgeable about. Through these events, I was able to visit a theatre, museums, restaurants, the Japanese Garden, and many more.

The volunteer work that I did focused around a home for children, and I was able to play with and develop connections with kids ages 0-12. Every day, I would travel to this home for a few hours, bring games and art for the kids, and sometimes help them with a meal as well. It was both a great way to practice Spanish, as well as an amazing opportunity to learn more about what life is like for a young student in the city. I felt like my time here was very well-spent, and I came out of this position with a much better understanding of the schooling and healthcare systems in Argentina as well.

For my housing, I was able to stay in a residence for students attending university in Buenos Aires. I had three roommates for the majority of my stay, two of which were from Ecuador and one who was from Northern Argentina. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know them, and they made me feel welcomed from the moment I arrived.

All in all, I would strongly recommend Mente Argentina for anyone looking for an immersive, independent experience in an urban city. The volunteer program and Spanish lessons work with your schedule, so you develop a sustainable routine while still having plenty of time to explore the city on your own. There are many fun day trips as well from the city center, such as taking the ferry to Colonia in Uruguay or going up to the delta Tigre in a nearby province. I am so appreciative for everyone that I met during my time with Mente and I hope to return to Buenos Aires someday soon! Below are a few photos from my stay-

Pros
  • Got to meet participants from all over the world
  • Practiced my Spanish skills and learned a lot about the political and economic situation in Argentina
  • Had a sustainable balance between structured and unstructured time
Cons
  • The heat during the summer is a lot to manage without air conditioning

Best 6 weeks

This year I had the pleasure of experiencing Argentinian culture for six weeks. Thanks to the amazing Mente Argentina staff and other fellow participants, this has been an absolutely unforgettable adventure which I will cherish forever.
Through Mente, I took the intensive language course which was fun, interactive and perfectly challenging for my beginner proficiency level. In addition, they provided me with a wonderful accomodation in Palermo, the most exciting part of Buenos Aires! The comfortable and fully furnished apartment was also close to all things I needed, such as the convinience stores right next door and the lavadero and metro station down the street. Sharing the apartment with four other Mente participants allowed me to build the best friendships and feel right at home there!
The combination of the hospitality and professional assistance was remarkable. For example, the initial services included in the personal welcoming booklet, like a SIM card and public transport card, proved extremely useful and stress-relieving. Similarly, any questions and requests were always promptly answered by the extraordinary staff. Moreover, I always made sure to attend the weekly activites that Mente organized. They were the perfect way exploring the city’s culture and food like a local in a very fun and social way with my fellow Mente participants, accompanied by the best Mente coordinator! This way, I met the other diverse and international students and was able to build lasting friendships.
All in all, I had the most amazing stay in Buenos Aires thanks to the exceptional staff from Mente Argentina (and the language school) and I highly recommend their services to everyone who considers visiting Argentina as well!

Pros
  • Hospitality and professionalism
  • Experience argentinian/buenos aires culture like a local
  • Friendships, fun, social
