A Perfect Prague Summer

My summer program in Prague was arguably the best two months of my life. I came into my experience with very few specific expectations, only hearing how wonderful others' experiences were. It is safe to say that my study abroad experience was beyond what I could have hoped, and I can provide some specifics on what made my time so special. First, after spending most of my weekends traveling and seeing many cities, the city of Prague is easily one of the best places to call home. Not only is it breathtaking, but it is a safe, kind, and abundant place to live. Further, the connections I made while abroad will stay with me forever. The CEA CAPA staff in Prague were very supportive and friendly, and I now have friends from around the country and the world due to my time there. Finally, the food also made my time exceptional. As a self-proclaimed foodie, the food scene in Prague did not disappoint. While the local cuisine was not my daily choice, there is a variety and quality that I would compare to New York or Los Angeles (but much more affordable). Overall, I cannot recommend studying abroad with CEA CAPA in Prague enough!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of the unique location of Prague! The Czech Republic is in Central Europe, which seems to be widely less traveled than Western Europe. I found many countries were accessible due to their proximity, which I would likely never find myself in again due to their typically inconvenient location.
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Architecture
  • Weather
Cons
  • Language barrier

Summer abroad in Prague

Over my time in Prague, Czech Republic I got to meet, see, and experience new people and places that I never thought I would be able to. This program gave me many opportunities to meet other students from different colleges and parts of life through many activities and outings. Having Prague as my home base was not my first option but was the biggest blessing that came from my abroad experience. The city is lively and has so much to offer and became home within the first few days of living there. This was the safest city I traveled to along with having the easiest communication between Americans and Europeans.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Pork Knuckle! While is Chesky Kromlov, Czech Republic my group stopped to get lunch at a traditional Czech restaurant and ordered the meat platter. It came out and we didn't know what any of the meats were but, they were all amazing! I found out at the end of the meal my favorite was the pork knuckle.

Great study abroad experience!

Throughout my time in Prague the CEA CAPA staff provided us students with so much support. They organized activities and excursions to help us make friends and see new parts of the city. They also made sure we had plenty of opportunities to explore the city and travel on our own. Every morning we were always met with smiling faces and enthusiasm. The professors were all friendly and made the classes interesting by relating what we were learning to the real world. CEA CAPA made my study abroad experience amazing.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My main piece of advice would be to learn some basic phrases in Czech. Most people do speak English, but workers in several places did not. Once we learned a bit of the language it made communicating easier and the Czech people seemed to really appreciate it.
Pros
  • Friendly Staff
  • Good Academics
  • Easy to Navigate

My Semester Abroad in Prague

I really enjoyed my semester abroad in Prague with CEA CAPA. I was a very important time for me and my overall college experience. I honestly fell in love with Prague. I was interested in its history, loved its varied and unique architecture, and enjoyed getting to know its people. I loved how the classes that I took with CEA CAPA helped me to experience Prague through educated and unique ways that added to my overall experience. Learning about the city’s history while actually living in it made my understanding so much deeper.
Prague’s history is everywhere! There are medieval towers, communist-era buildings, and modern cafes on almost every street. I took classes that studied the history of everything from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the Velvet Revolution, I also took an architecture class that taught me even more about the culture during those times and then, right after class, I’d go out and see the places we’d just talked about. Visiting historical sites and museums, or even just riding the tram through different neighborhoods, gave me a sense of connection to the city’s past that I’ve never felt in a classroom back home.
Beyond the academics, I loved how easy it was to feel at home in Prague. It’s big enough that there’s always something to do, but small enough that it begins to feel familiar after just a few weeks. The public transportation is amazing, I was surprised how quickly I could figure it out. Within a week, I felt comfortable traveling around the city on my own, which made everything from grocery shopping to weekend adventures feel fun and sufficient.
The people were welcoming too. Most locals were kind and patient, even if there was a bit of a language barrier at times. And the CEA CAPA staff were fantastic. They were always available to help, whether it was with class questions, travel tips, or just adjusting to life abroad. The events and trips they organized really helped me get to know the city and bond with other students in the program.
If I had to pick one thing I wish had been clearer, it would be the structure of the partnership between CEA CAPA and the local university, AAU. I was confused at the beginning about how the two schools worked together and how this would affect my scheduling and grading. It didn’t ruin the experience by any means, but having that information upfront would’ve made the start of the semester a bit smoother.
All in all, I can’t recommend studying abroad in Prague with CEA CAPA more. The city is beautiful, historical, and easy to love. I learned so much and came away with memories I’ll have for the rest of my life.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Liver meatballs!
Pros
  • The city itself
  • The food
  • The public transportation
Cons
  • Some classes were fairly difficult
  • The last month was freezing
  • Tiny apartment kitchen

I loved Prague!!!!!

I went abroad in fall of my junior year of college and it was one of the most reqarding experiences of my life. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. Prgaue was such a wonderful city to have as my "home base" city while abroad. It is a fairly clean city, people are kind and mostly comfortable with english. Additionally, because the country hasnt switched to the euro, the country and city is more affordable then most of the EU. The city has a ton of parks, like I talking about 30% of the city is nature. You still get the old city experience but it isnt crazy big like london or paris is but still large enough that you will not lack things to do, experience, nor explore. My recomendation is definately visit prague castle at sundown and also to visit vyeshard (translates to the old castle) which is ruins turned park space.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
The biggest thing I would change is to find more places. I ended up at the end still feeling like I had more to see and i defineitly got complacent in just going to the coffee shop near me or just going to the resturant my friends and I knew we would like, which is fun to do for like a neighborhood place but it meant that i didnt try as many places as I wished to. Guess it just means I'll have to go back!
Pros
  • affordable
  • public transportation and walkable city
  • so much to do and see
Cons
  • conversion can be more complex with travel
  • have to fly to the western travel destinations
  • didn't have enough time to see it all

Fall 2024 CEA CAPA Prague

I studied abroad in Prague in the Czech Republic during the fall semester of my Junior year. I went with CEA CAPA and I attended classes at the Anglo American University, which CEA CAPA partnered with. I had the most amazing time abroad, and would recommend any students who are considering going abroad to check out this program! I met so many wonderful people, tried new foods, explored new places, and had the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture. CEA CAPA was always very supportive of students and planned great excursions!

Push yourself and it is worth it!

Studying abroad had a significant impact on my academic growth. It provided a chance to deepen my understanding and appreciation of politics and foreign affairs. I greatly admire Prague's political atmosphere, with its rich history and diverse viewpoints, and I learned so much. This experience gave me a unique opportunity to bring innovative ideas back to Marist. It is exciting to be in an environment where curiosity sparks ideas, innovation, and creativity. Because of this I engaged in meaningful intellectual exchanges with my peers in Prague, which will be a valuable learning experience for all of us. Additionally, I'm eager to gain a different academic perspective by interacting with professors from around the world, further broadening my concept of what it means to be a well-rounded student.

What would you improve about this program?
I would ask the program to give more opportunities to really get to know the culture and the people. It was so hard to connect with locals and the culture as a foreigner. I always wonder if my experience would have been different if this did occur.
Pros
  • I was able to conduct research
  • Participated in an internship
  • Took unfamiliar courses that lead to me declaring a minor.
Cons
  • Were not enough events for students
  • Limited selection of courses
  • Small space; no study room for students.

My Experience in Prague!

I can not emphasize enough what an incredible and transformative experience studying abroad is. The opportunity to embark on a journey of self-discovery and independence is something I would not trade for the world. CEA CAPA heavily influenced by time abroad by facilitating awesome social events, providing support in a number of ways, and expanding my thinking in the classroom. The CEA team created a home away from home by fostering a sense of community and nurturing the growth of all students. The staff were always available and ready to do whatever was needed to improve my and my peers' experience. The activities they planned such as bowling night, a river cruise, an overnight trip to another Czech town, ice skating, and more allowed me to bond with other students in the program in a fun and natural environment. In addition, the professors were absolutely incredible. Their enthusiasm was contagious and the field trips gave me opportunities to see things I otherwise wouldn't have been able to access. Because of these things and many more, I am eternally grateful for CEA and the experience they provided me with.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Utilize public transit! It is such a privilege to be able to navigate a city with such ease and for such a reasonable price. This mobility provides so many opportunities. Take advantage of it--ride to the end of the line and see what you see!
Pros
  • Very affordable
  • Strong sense of community
  • Engaging and passionate professors
