To begin, I was super hesitant about studying abroad and I wasn't sure if I wanted to go across the world at first. I was going into this whole thing alone, because all of my friends were studying abroad during the school year. I told myself that I needed to get out of my comfort zone and I decided to go, and I am so glad. I was paired with an amazing roommate who went to a different school, but we got along great. We ended up doing everything together, and meeting so many other friends along the way. I was only in Prague a month and it flew by, we were constantly on the go and seeing things. I was able to go to Croatia, Poland, and Austria, while also being in classes. I took classes Monday through Wednesday so I was able to travel Thursday through Sunday. I also had an amazing professor who was so helpful throughout the course and taught me a lot about international business. We were able to go into banks and museums and I learned a lot about how business is done in different cultures. One thing that a little hard at first was learning the Czk conversion to U.S dollars. I was able to get the hang of it though. Overall I am super grateful for my opportunity to study abroad and I would not change anything about it. Hopefully one day I will be able to go back to Prague and visit all the same places I saw when I was younger.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

My advice to future travelers on this program is to see and do as much as you can. Yes, it gets tiring constantly booking and planning things to do, but you won't regret it. I was able to visit 3 other countries while I was in Prague and I am so glad I did, because I am not sure if I ever would be able to otherwise.

This program was by far my favorite summer of my life ever! I came in knowing no one in the program and left with the greatest friends that I still hang out with to this day. The city of Prague is so underrated (very walkable, clean, connected to other cities, and has so much history surrounding it). I loved learning both in and out of the classroom with all of the excursions CEA CAPA provides. The class schedule is amazing because classes are only Mon-Wed so every weekend you are able to travel

As someone who had never left the east coast before this trip, I would choose this opportunity to be my first time abroad every time. I studied abroad in Prague for 4 weeks, and was housed in a cute apartment with my roommates away from the hustle and bustle of Prague 1. Public transit was hard to learn at first, but was incredibly accessible in a way that I wish I could use back to the states. There's a true appreciation for art and nature in Czechia that can be seen everywhere you look. I recommend Prague to anyone else traveling for the first time!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Practice Czech before you go abroad. I took the time to practice it in my free time for about a month before going abroad and it really helped since we lived in an area that had a varying amount of english-speakers.

This past summer I studied in Prague, Czech Republic with CEA CAPA Education Abroad and overall it was a fantastic experience! Prague is an amazing city with lots to offer, and I didn't even come close to doing everything after being there for two months. While Prague is a big city, each neighborhood has a distinct vibe that makes it unique. This definitely can make the city feel smaller if that's something you're looking for.

My experience with CEA CAPA Education Abroad was excellent, as the classes weren't too challenging but challenging enough for me to learn a lot. They do a really good job making sure that their students have plenty of time to explore the city and really enjoy their experience abroad! They also host excursions where students can explore the Czech Republic outside of Prague, as well as events within the city itself. I participated in many of these things myself, and I got to explore and learn a lot about the history of Prague and the Czech Republic as a whole.

I would definitely recommend studying abroad with CEA CAPA, whether that's in Prague or anywhere else. I'd also recommend Prague to anybody who's just traveling around Europe as well! There certainly is not a shortage of things to do there, and I had little to no poor experiences there.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Explore neighborhoods outside of the Old Town! Karlín, Žižkov, and Vinohrady were some of my favorites.

Over the summer I spent 8 weeks abroad studying engineering and math in Prague and I can only say good things about this program. My time abroad not only made me a better engineer and student, but helped me to gain confidence and experience that I would not have had studying at home. Prague is a perfect city for history, sightseeing, and travel to other European countries. Classes and student resources in this program are fantastic, CEA CAPA does a fantastic job making sure that students are cared for and have the opportunities they need to thrive in a new and unfamiliar environment and I cannot recommend this program enough.

I studied abroad in Prague for 8-weeks in the summer, taking an engineering statistics course and a cross-cultural management course. This experience was better than I could have ever imagined. While I grew a lot academically, the most growth I saw was in myself personally. I have become much more independent, confident in my abilities, and better at problem-solving. I got to experience so many different cultures and learn how to effectively communicate with others who are from various backgrounds. I also found my own research internship while I was abroad by simply cold-emailing various places around there. This gave me another unforgettable research experience that helped me grow professionally and as a person.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

My advice to future travelers on this program would be to meet everyone in your program who lives in the same building as you. Those are the people you will spend the most time with and can create lifelong friendships. I also recommend taking advantage of the time you have on the weekends to travel all around Europe.

Over this summer, I was able to study abroad and internship in Prague, and it was one of the best experiences I ever had. There were many challenges at the start, but once I was able to find my grove, everything seemed to fall in easier. With every student that I met, I was able to learn something new about myself and make tons of friends that I hope I can connect with again in the future. As well as, the CEA CAPA staff and my internship staff were very helpful in making me feel comfortable when living in a new city. I would highly recommend this program.

The program was all around amazing. I was able to make some great friends, and the staff were able to help me out with any problems that I had. It was hard when I was studying abroad at first I was having a few issues But honestly I don't think that I would change anything about my experience. Every student that I was able to meet in Prague, made an impression on my life and most I hope I can see again someday. I cannot wait to start the process of being an alumni ambassador. It will be a fun experience that I cannot wait to start.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose Prague, Czech Republic, because many people either didn’t know much about the country or still associated it with Czechoslovakia. Geographically, it’s in the heart of Europe, making travel to other countries easy—like taking just a two-hour bus ride to Dresden, Germany. On top of that, the pictures of the city were stunning, from its churches to its castles. Since all my classes were going to transfer back to my home institution, I decided to take the leap and go abroad on my own.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The program guided me through the process by providing the necessary forms for scholarships, financial payments, and the paperwork that needed signatures from advisors and department heads to ensure my classes would transfer back. On my own, I was able to select courses within my Psychology and Anthropology minors. One of the highlights was enrolling in a Czech Food & Brewing Traditions class for my Anthropology minor. As the saying goes, it’s always better to get to know a country through its food.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Do not hesitate to ask questions—advisors can’t read your mind, and they’re there to help. Many of my advisors at both my home institution and CEA CAPA had studied abroad during their own undergraduate years, so they truly understand what an incredible opportunity it is. I went solo to Prague, which was both scary and exciting, but it became an adventure filled with new friends and plenty of stories—like laughing later about mistakes, trying to speak the language, or even getting lost coming back from the grocery store. Beyond that, I also had the chance to travel and experience places like Italy, Croatia, and Belgium during the off-season, when they weren’t crowded with tourists.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I had one class a day from Monday to Thursday, which gave me a lot of flexibility. Depending on the day, especially Mondays and Tuesdays, I would either meet up with friends for lunch or dinner, or simply wander around Prague to see where I ended up—sometimes at a mall, other times at a local coffee shop. On Wednesdays, I had a 6–9 p.m. class with one of my roommates. The course was on subcultures, and our professor was actually in a rock band, so some evenings we’d have lectures, while other times we’d go to her concerts—one even on a boat along the Vltava River. I wrapped up my week with a 9 a.m. class on Thursdays, then either packed my bag for a weekend trip or did my grocery shopping to settle in for the weekend.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was being alone, and there were definitely times when my roommates were busy. To overcome that, I connected with other students at my partner institution, whether it was for traveling together or something as simple as grabbing lunch or dinner. Some students come abroad with friends or through their fraternities or sororities, but many arrive on their own—just like I did. That’s why it’s so important not to be afraid to reach out. The worst someone can say is no, but at least you tried—and more often than not, the answer will be yes.

Dr. Lenka Vystrčilová holds a position as CEA’s Academic Director in Prague. A Slovak native, Lenka spent many years studying abroad in the United States and Germany. Her academic experience abroad and her passion for international education have led her to pursue a career in study abroad program management.

What position do you hold at CEA? What has been your career path so far?

Lenka: As CEA's Academic Director in Prague, I serve as the primary contact for students regarding all academic issues, including student academic advising and academic program management. I am also charged with working closely with university academic leadership and administration of our partner institution in Prague, Anglo-American University. Prior to joining CEA in December 2013, I worked in academic program management for a U.S. study abroad in Germany and international education in Prague.

My responsibilities included management of academic affairs, academic quality assurance, student advising, development of academic programs, and course delivery. By training, I am a political scientist specializing on democratization, post-communist transitions in Central and Eastern Europe, and European Union studies.

Did you study abroad? If so, where and what inspired you to go?

Lenka: I spent many years living and studying in the U.S. (Lewis & Clark College and Stanford University) and Germany (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet). My first year in the U.S. made possible by the Open Society Fund was a huge eye-opener and irreplaceable learning experience, not only in terms of learning about my host environment but also about myself.

Although my initial inspiration to study in the U.S. might have been “just” my interest in English language, American history, and literature, study abroad has transformed my world views way beyond my initial interests or expectations. I consider myself very lucky to guide our CEA students in Prague while they make similar life-changing experiences in “my” part of the world.

Why is language and cultural immersion important to you?

Lenka: Our CEA Prague students may have it tougher as they mostly have no prior knowledge of the Czech language, but we encourage them to learn at least basic phrases useful for everyday life. Although they may be far from proficient when they leave Prague, it is the effort made greeting or thanking people, which signals open mindedness and willingness to embrace the host culture.

At CEA, we are strong believers in the importance of authentic cultural immersion, if study abroad is to fulfill its mission of personal and academic growth. Whether it is a Czech cooking workshop, volunteering opportunities within local community, international internships, or buddy program pairing students up with peers, we always try to come up with creative ways to complement and enhance students’ academic experience with meaningful immersion opportunities in Czech life and culture.

What unique qualities does your company possess?

Lenka: All my CEA colleagues worldwide are travel and study abroad enthusiasts. I think that this collective passion for international education makes CEA a very dynamic and innovative organization.

I enjoy that we always continue to look for ways to think outside the box and creatively seek ways to continuously enhance student learning in order to help our students have a truly transformational study abroad experience.
