Study Abroad at The American University in Cairo

This is my fifth year at AUC and I am very happy with my choice to come here to live and study. The professors in the Political Science department are exceptionally helpful and have immense knowledge to give the students. They never fail to make the learning experience challenging and very much worth the hard work. I appreciate how available they always are and how ready they are to help with any difficulty.
International students are treated very well here and provided with all the assistance and care they could ever need. Many of the professors are the reason why I stayed here at AUC for my MA in Political Science.
It is a wonderful campus and campus life would benefit so much academically and socially with more international students.
The location of the campus is pretty remote from old Cairo where internationals can have the real Egyptian Experience. Still you can always plan a trip downtown and enjoy it anytime you want.

AUC is good, full of opportunities for curious minds.
I had my skepticisms when coming to Egypt for grad studies, but AUC provides the appropriate standard that could be obtained anywhere in the world.
The location within Cairo is good, it is accessible from anywhere in the city. The learning environment is conducive, encouraging exploration and research. The staff and faculty are very helpful, and are ready to help willing students in their academic and career pursuits. As I grad student, I want to commend the AUC work/study programs, they provide an opportunity to learn new things, and make little cash for some basic needs.
Just like in any society you will find the good, the bad and the ugly in Cairo and AUC as well. The good: AUC is a great place with lots of opportunities for the curious mind, the bad: language barrier within campus is still a nagging issue, the ugly: despite the many efforts of the University to enlighten students about people from outside Egypt, some students are still very ignorant.
In all, its a good place!

I had the best experience as an exchange student in AUC. I absolutely loved my classes (i took anthropology and sociology) and the profs were quite qualified, although sometimes confused. Some gave us too much freedom, which was frustrating. but otherwise they are very knowledgeable and willing to help. I made so many friends through school activities and in the dorms. Dorm community is a very cozy environment, the campus is safe. Only negative was that the level of education is lower than in my home university, but that is only in your advantage if you desire good grades. Also the location of the campus in New Cairo is very inconvenient, because it is far from everything, and there's not much to do in New Cairo. Otherwise, amazing experience, amazing people, qualified staff. Overall, I am too sad to leave this place.

The level of education here is very good. My professors are great and I am learning a lot. Staff and administration are very competent post-enrollment, though there were quite a few issues prior to my arrival.

Frequent, inexpensive, inclusive trips are arranged by the university to various parts of the country, which is nice for international students.

If your parents are worrying about security, tell them not to. You have to go through two security gates to enter campus, including a metal detector and X-Ray for your bag. To enter the dorms, it's other one to two ID checkpoints depending on whether a door is left open or not. As for the city, I feel safer walking around Cairo alone at night than any city in the United States. As literally the most 24 hour city in the world, you will very rarely be walking down dark streets alone and people here have a tendency to look out for each other.

It may be convenient, but I highly advise against staying in the dorms. The office acts as if they are our parents, with a curfew, requiring use of ID to enter (they do track who goes in and out in order to enforce the curfew), and a total prohibition on visitors of the opposite sex, alcohol, and smoking. I literally had more freedom when I was 15.

Now that the semester is ending I look back to amazing experiences. I love this campus so much, I can't get used to it's beauty and I keep discovering new places by accident which is actually worth being late in class for. And there's a pool!! On Campus!!
I took four psychology courses: biopsychology, abnormal psychology, selected topics in neuroscience and family psychology. I liked how I was encouraged to work in groups all the time, since my home university doesn't really do this.
Egypt has always been the place where my heart lives, the culture and people are beautiful, I really miss that in Holland. All with all, I'm very grateful for this beautiful experience but nothing can describe my gratefulness for the amazing people I met. I will miss you all.

Actually before coming here, I was expecting a different experience. I had lots of bad moments because of the challenging life conditions in Egypt, however, AUC and AUC community always helped me. For academic purposes, it is different than European education system, the university totally adapts the American system. Even though being integrated into the system is a bit difficult, instructors are well educated and helpful. Also I have lots of good friends here and I went lots of good destinations where resemble heaven. Cairo is especially a crowded and noisy city, and living here is difficult for foreigners if you don't know Arabic. However, Egypt is also a country that i have lots of good beaches and blue diving points. I am happy to be here and I am recommending this program to those who want to choose Egypt.

I went into studying at AUC, with the simple intention of doing something different from everyone else. I couldn't have imagined what an insane journey I was about to throw myself on, and how much I learned from doing so. I left the US that February and entered into a culture that celebrates religion, speaks a different language and moves at a different pace. I remember staring out the windows in awe as I was driven from the airport to my dorms. Nothing compares to the hilarity and energy of a Cairo street where fancy cars are followed by donkey-driven carts, and McDonalds billboards rise above half finished houses with chickens on the roof.

I learned so much during my time in Cairo and AUC. The Arabic program was phenomenal, the people were kind, the adventures endless. We were given the opportunity to see everything from the red sea, to the black and white desert, to the tombs of Tutankhamun. Egypt is an incredible place with immense history and culture to share. I highly recommend people to take the leap and jump out of their comfort zone into this magical land.
