Lagos: The most populated city in Nigeria, Lagos is located on the western coast and is surrounded by a group of islands. The city is known for its vibrant music and nightlife, and is the center of the African hip-hop movement. With a wide variety of different public and private universities, Lagos is a great study abroad destination.

Kano: Kano is located in Northern Nigeria. The city has historically served as a trading center for the country and reflects the influence of many other regions in Africa and around the world. Kano is also the center for a thriving Islamic community, and if you study there you will be able to participate in many Muslim traditions and festivals.

Ibadan: Home to the first university in Nigeria, Ibadan is a great place to study abroad if you’re interested in learning about the history of the nation. The city lies between the coastal and mountainous regions of the country and features many different aspects of the Nigerian lifestyle.

Academic Life

Nigeria is considered an educational hub in Africa. The country has many universities in every discipline, including humanities, engineering, and law. Nigeria is also a great destination for students interested in studying health or medicine.

Language

Over 500 languages are spoken in Nigeria! As a student you’ll be exposed to many of these, but don’t worry, English is the official language of Nigeria and your classes will be taught in English.

Housing

If you decide to study in Nigeria, you will be able to choose between a few different housing options. Staying in a homestay with a family is a great way to learn more about Nigerian culture, language, and food. If you are studying in a city you may choose to live in a dormitory or apartment with other students, and you’ll have the opportunity to meet students from around the world. Social Life and Student Culture

Lots of social activities for students in Nigeria revolve around the country’s vibrant music scene. There are lots of clubs in the larger cities with great African hip-hop music. In smaller villages, you’ll be able to hear indigenous and traditional musicians. There’s also a lot of jazz and soul throughout the country.

There are many other cultural activities for students living in Nigeria to take advantage of. Food is very important to Nigerian culture and you will be able to taste all of the African specialties. The country is also filled with natural wonders for you to explore.

  • Yankari National Park: In addition to a herd of over 500 elephants, this park contains more than 400 different species of exotic animals. On your visit, try to spot a hyena, buffalo, or leopard!
  • Osun Sacred Forest: This UNESCO World Heritage Site in one of Nigeria’s rainforests contains many traditional Nigerian sculptures, including a large shrine to the Nigerian River Goddess.
