2000 Sheep in the Center of Madrid

While in Madrid for the weekend with the program, our tour guide told us of a tradition where local farmers push a herd of 2,000 sheep through the center of Madrid to their winter pastures. Our program director had us vote, and we left the hotel a bit earlier the next morning to catch the start of the procession before our bike tour. It was just an example of the random cultural experiences you're bound to find while studying abroad and I loved every second of it!

What would you improve about this program?
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and the program overall, but a bit more information on what to expect when first landing in London (for our flight package: an optional tour of London) and when first landing in Spain would have helped put us more at ease. We were all so nervous and unsure of what to do, so a knowing a little bit more of what to expect would have been better.

Small city, big things

I loved Granada. I could walk anywhere I needed to go but always found something new to explore. There's something for everyone...shops, beaches, hiking, and nightlife. The program staff is the most helpful duo you can find. I felt at home.

What would you improve about this program?
Maybe a study program to help with homework and classes.

So glad I went!!

Barcelona has so much to offer! Besides the wonderful Mediterranean weather, there's always something new to discover.

One of my favorite pastimes in Barça was exploring the Gothic quarter, which is full of neat shops, restaurants, and (perhaps my favorite) gelato shops!! You can find all of these throughout the city, but the Gothic is very Medieval!

Another favorite pastime was spending time in the Parc de la Ciutadella. There's a huge, beautiful fountain, ping pong tables (yes, people play ping pong outside in parks!), and plenty of shady spaces to lay a blanket down to read or do yoga. There's a huge pond in the middle of the park too where you can rent a paddleboat or find a bench to people watch or start a conversation with someone.

The FOOD is amazing!! Of course, not all food is created equal. If you use Trip Advisor, you'll find the gems! The mediterranean diet is considered the healthiest in the world. Enjoy every bit of it, too, because it can't be replicated back home. The Ensalada de Espinacas y Fresas was my FAVORITE!! It was probably the fresh, warm goat's cheese... can't get it like that at home. :)

Practice your SPANISH! The locals love when you converse with them in Spanish (or Catalan, the official language of Barcelona). I was barely past beginner level when I arrived in Barcelona, but the locals were generally very patient. I received better service, and learned more about the city when I did my best to speak Spanish. Thankfully, most people in Barça speak English if you have a limit to your Spanish fluency. It just targets you as a tourist, and if you're studying abroad in a country, it's respectful to learn their language.

What really made my trip worthwhile was that I tried something NEW every day. Whether it was trying a new food, exploring a new area, or stepping a little more out of my comfort zone. One of the most courageous things I did was travel outside of Spain by myself. European travel is super affordable if you're already within the EU. It's impossible not to make friends if you're a traveler (especially backpacking).

The biggest thing I learned from my study abroad experience with AIFS is that your experience is what you make it. Nobody is going to tell you what to do. The great thing about being in Europe is that you can easily travel from one country to another, within the EU. I wish I had planned more thoroughly!

What would you improve about this program?
To focus more time to connect the students early on so that they all know each other. I didn't know half the people in my program because we never ran into each other. We might have spent more time together if we had some initial icebreaker activities upon arrival in Barcelona.

Also, take care to be sure that host families are feeding us well. There were times when the food I was served was moldy. I didn't expect gourmet meals, but I was hoping for something healthy, at least.

A Life Changing Experience

My primary goal studying abroad was to get as much practice with Spanish as possible, since I am a Spanish major. I also wanted to get to know the city and country and take other opportunities to travel. AIFS was great because the placed me in an incredible home stay that was the highlight of my experience abroad. The family was incredibly welcoming and I felt at home with them very quickly. They included me in their family events and outings and made sure I was happy and comfortable. The program directors in Granada, Edu and Noelia, were also amazing. They were supportive and helpful and did everything they could to improve our experience abroad and adjust to our new lives there. I also loved the excursions with AIFS. I got to see so many cities in Spain and I am not sure I would have seen so many if I didn't have the excursions to make traveling so easy. The trips had a good balance of education and sightseeing and downtime to do what we wanted. I left my semester abroad with a greater confidence in my speaking ability. While abroad, I also discovered the career path I am pursuing now as I prepare for graduation in 6 months. Studying abroad gave me direction that I did not have before.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish that there was an opportunity to take classes with Spanish students, instead of entirely with Americans and other international students. I also wish AIFS had provided us with more than one intercambio. I think I would've had more practice if I had an obligation every week or every few weeks.

Wonderful Summer Experience

I had a fantastic experience this Summer working as an intern for a public relations firm in Barcelona. Global Experiences took care of all of the networking for me and helped match me with the perfect employer long before going abroad, and also found me housing in a great spot in the city. I doubt I would've been able to get an internship like this and had such a great experience without a very legit agency, and Global Experiences gave me everything I could've asked for!

What would you improve about this program?
Present the option to live alongside natives of the country, to be able to give full language and cultural immersion to those who really want it.

If you wonder if you should sign up or not, I say do something for you and your future...Challenge your limits, don't miss this opportunity and sign up! It's so worth it! The last 12 weeks have been perfect and every single day was an adventure! I loved it!

Great Program

It was a great program! one of the biggest things was our location coordinator! she couldn't have been more amazing or more helpful ... i had a problem with my housing and she talked to me multiple times a day keeping me updated on stuff and got me moved to a apartment that was 10 times better then my first one! She was so great and when it comes down to it, Location Coordinators are everything when it comes to picking a program!

What would you improve about this program?
I would change the process for signing up, it uses drop box which i was un familiar with but after you learn how to use drop box it was fine!

Barcelona Fall 2014

This semester surpassed any expectation I could have set for myself. My host family was wonderful and extremely accomodating, especially when I got sick twice. I found the staff extremely helpful and always there as well. Having an intercambio also helped assimilate myself into the culture a little more- so thank you for setting that up. Barcelona is a great city and I´m glad I got to experience what it has to offer.
