Life Changing Course

This was the most life-changing course I’ve ever taken. It was difficult and intense, even for a college graduate. However, I appreciated the loads of support I received from my TEFL trainer, Jackie, and my fellow TEFLers. We now all have teaching experience, international experience, and a hefty portfolio. I came into this course with no intention to get a job in teaching after graduation, but I’m seriously considering switching careers and becoming an ESL teacher now. Thank you so much Maximo Nivel!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
During Practical Teaching Week, the WiFi went out for a few minutes while I was teaching class. I was so anxious to hop back on, but the students were waiting for me and we continued on with the class:) Keep calm and TEFL on as Jackie says!

Amazing Experience

My time in Manuel Antonio with Maximo Nivel was amazing! I had Karen and Jackie as my TEFL trainers and they were an amazing duo thoughout the program. I felt like I got so much real experience and I felt very prepared once we initiated with practical teaching week. I actually also got a job in Guatemala with Maximo! I am living out a dream and I am so thankful for everything I learned during my TEFL class. ALSO, Manuel Antonio is beautiful and the institute looks over the ocean. I mean, it doesn't get better than that!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I went to the Manuel Antonio National park and saw 8 sloths and some even had their babies on them! It is so amazing to see and I recommend paying the extra for a tour guide because finding these animals is an art form.

Keep calm and tefl on Jackie

Amazing teacher.. You were born to do this. You bring calm when needed. You provide support and a kick in a butt when your teflers need it. You have such love and patience for your job and that translates in how you made us feel. The program is pretty intense. However you do get out of it feeling like a real English teacher. Jackie kept the class informative, interactive and lots of fun. She provided a lot advise on where to go and what to do with the little spare time you got.... She was an all-round great person and teacher. Pura Vida

What would you improve about this program?
Accommodation is way too pricy compared to what the average cost for accommodation actually is in costa rica.

Amazing Experience!

I loved this program with Jackie, the TEFL Trainer! No one is more dedicated than she is to teaching, helping the students, and supporting us. I've had very few teachers over the course of my education that were as passionate and dedicated as Jackie was to helping us. She is an incredible teacher. The amount of effort she puts in for us is amazing, and you can tell she's meant for this! I learned an enormous amount throughout the 4 weeks, and I would do it again in a heartbeat! The staff here are awesome, and in a beautiful spot too.

What was your funniest moment?
I loved the funny things Jackie would say to us, so I made a quote list of hers for her to keep!!!

Jackie Bira

Jackie was an awesome instructor. Full of life, energy, funny and smart. Jackie respected everyone and considered their points of view. She has an open door policy and is willing to work with the students. Students also have to do their part. This is not a vacation, or a time to party. This is an year long education push into four weeks. This is a very doable course. I learned more from Jackie in four weeks than I did in four years of high school. The other staff are also very kind and helpful. Noelia is so sweet and I wish I could bring her back to the states with me.

What was your funniest moment?
online teaching, I forgot I was on camera, so I put my head down to the speaker to hear the student that was speaking.

TEFLito!

I was lucky enough to have both Karen and Jackie as my TEFL instructors. From day 1 they made the classroom feel warm and inviting. They made the class so fun that it didn't feel like we were in class. The amount of games and laughter made the whole experience very enjoyable. The feedback from the instructors was crucial to my development as an ESL teacher. They were there to support us in and outside of the classroom. The course moves very quickly, but Karen and Jackie were with us every step of the way. The instructors and the course went above and beyond my exceptions.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come into the program with no expectations. Be open with what is taught to you and try to stay present in the moment. The program goes by so quickly that by the time it's over you're left wishing that you could go back and do it all over again.

Jackie Bira (Teacher)

I completed my TEFL course in April -May 2021 and my teacher Jackie Bira was incredible! She is really heaven sent. She assisted us all, she guided us and she made us feel at home. If I have to rate my full experience with Maximo Nivel it is 100/100. Thank you for everything guys. JACKIE YOU ROCK! I also want to motivate people from all around the world to apply and do a course with Maximo Nivel - I mean who doesn't want to meet Jackie? Who doesn't want to learn spanish or become a qualified teacher?

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Iguanas - haha back in South Africa it is uncommon but here it is common

TEFL 2021

I was looking to do my TEFL certification in person, instead of online, especially after a year of working/quarantining during the pandemic. I appreciated they were pretty affordable, helpful from the start, answering all my questions promptly, and I would be able to travel to Costa Rica (again) safely and fairly easily Though the housing wasn't exactly what I was expecting, I was able to adapt and not let it effect me, other than my initial anxiety upon arriving and coming out for dinner to a huge group of people. As far as the school is concerned, we had 2 incredible instructors, Jackie and Claudia... there are not enough adjectives to describe them. They had incredible rapport, energy, compassion, knowledge, enthusiasm and were more than patient and helpful. I felt like I could talk to them about anything (in a safe space) and they never got frustrated with us. There were definitely some tough love moments, but it was always balanced with compassion and empathy. The course is REALLY HARD and will challenge you maybe more than you expect, but it's worth it! Manuel Antonio and Quepos are beautiful, you will have some time to do things you want to do and explore, if you keep up with your work, and the people of Costa Rica are beautiful and Pura Vida!!! I am so thankful and blessed to have been able to give myself this gift and I feel if you are looking for a program, this is it!

What was your funniest moment?
Oh my gosh... there were so many... we definitely bonded as a class and had some great memories, living as a family for 4 weeks in and out of school... but one of my funniest moments was when I was in my last day of practical teaching. I was the last person to teach for the day, the anchor... and then we could all graduate and celebrate. There was a wicked storm that words wouldn't do justice to and I was having all sorts of technical and hearing issues. I changed rooms, I made the mest of it and I tried my darndest to "keep calm and TEFL on"!!! When I was in my feedback with the teachers, they were commending me on diong my best to teach in exceptional circumstances and they asked if I ever actually lost WiFi or not? I said, "No, my computer kept reading 'connection unstable' and I thought, me too WiFi, my connection is unstable also... I get you... sympatico!" :)

Questions & Answers

Apart from what the others have already suggested, I would also advise that any travel you intend on doing, you are prepared to leave until you've finished or to start beforehand. Manuel Antonio is a beautiful place, and you will certainly have beach time. But don't be fooled! The classes are intensive and require outside-the-classroom prep time. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks so much for your reply. I'd love if you could connect me with them! I'm going to be studying at Maximo in January 2017 and am very keen to teach :)

I would definitely recommend a laptop. You'll need it to work on assignments and lesson plans out of class. The building can get pretty hot, so being able to relocate to cooler locations is a must. Regarding clothes, I wore decent shorts and collared shirts for the classes. For interviews, I would recommend something more business casual.

The cost of the program varies by location and what type of stay you prefer (apartment, hostel, or homestay). I have added a link to the estimated program costs below that you may find helpful. In general, the cost will be somewhere between $2000-$2500, not including your flight. http://www.maximonivel.com/tefl-tesol/prices/
