Challenging, Demanding, Intense...but Worth Every Effort!!

The TEFL program at Maximo Nivel was one of the most professional courses I have every attended (and that is a LOT of courses). I am 66 years old, have a bachelors and MBA and am a retired USAF Colonel. This course will challenge you, no matter what your background. The instructors were first rate and packed in the content, while keeping the course active and fun. We laughed (a lot), but we worked really hard, too. The amount of course work was intense, requiring many hours outside the classroom to be prepared and to complete the reading and writing assignments. The course culminated with practical teaching, and that is where the long hours and hard work paid off. Seeing the response from your students in a real classroom situation cemented the value achieved by taking the TEFL course. If you are thinking about teaching English abroad, there is no better place to take the TEFL course than Maximo Nivel in Antigua, Guatemala. The city is awesome and I stayed in an apartment (vice a home stay), which worked out perfectly for me. I highly recommend Maximo Nivel and the TEFL course they provide.

What would you improve about this program?
I think the program could benefit from an extra week of time to spread the activities and requirements over a more manageable length of time. That said, sometimes the pressure and intensity helps galvanize the learning process and also in some ways can serve as a winnowing tool.

100%YES!!!

My experience was above and beyond all expectations of certifying with TEFL.
The lead instructor, Suzanne, the assistant instructor, Audra, the director, Sarah, and the whole office staff was exceptionally supportive of each of the student teachers and students. They truly wanted each of us to succeed, without giving us an easy break.
It was hard work, which made me appreciate my education and training. I feel very capable in my ability to teach immediately after graduating.
The bottom line ...fun! The instructors went above and beyond to include education with the joy of learning.
If I had it to do over again, I would choose this...100%. (Yes, even the grammar!)

Maximo is the place to do TEFL!

The TEFL certification program is intense. Anyone who has done it will tell you that. However doing it at Maximo in La Antigua makes the intensive program a wonderful experience. The lead trainer, Suzanne and assistant trainer, Audra are experienced, enthusiastic and supportive. They made the course fun and interactive. Plus they model the same techniques that they are teaching--reinforcing daily the TEFL techniques that are brand new to the majority of people who have never taught ESL before.
In addition, La Antigua is a wonderful place to study. The climate is perfect, there are lots of things to do, and the landscape is beautiful.

What would you improve about this program?
Make it a 6 week program--but apparently 4 weeks is the international standard. So anyone taking this program just needs to suck it up for the 4 weeks.

I had a great time and although it is an intensive course I think the teachers are well prepared and they make learning easy and enjoyable. I highly eecommend this place if you want to get your TEFL certificate, you wo't regret it. Thanks to Maximo Nivel for making me feel welcome and for all your support, the staff is the best and to my TEFL instructor Suzanne who is very knowleadgeable and has a unique amazing way of teaching.

Amazing program in an amazing place with amazing people!!

I took TEFL in Jan-Feb 2015. Not only was the location of the program beautiful, but the people here are so beautiful as well. I ended up getting my own one bedroom apartment which was extremely helpful for studying. I would walk to school at 8:30 am and get a smoothie or fresh orange juice from a fruit stand along the way. I have become very well acquainted with this beautiful city, and even considered a regular at some places. I am very sad to be leaving.

The course itself was also amazing. In Antigua the classes are generally smaller, which makes for a more personal experience and gives you the opportunity to REALLY learn what you are there for. I evolved so much as a teacher in my 4 weeks at Maximo, and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything in the world. AMAZING! DO IT!

Take TEFL

I volunteered with Maximo Nivel for 1 week in February and fell in love with Antigua. I moved back to Antigua in November and was feeling lost about my next steps. I knew I wanted to help the community further but wasn't sure how. With the help of the awesome girls from the office, Jean & Corinne I signed up for TEFL and took the leap of faith. I learned so much more than I thought possible in just one short month and now I feel incredibly confident to go out and start teaching the world. Maximo is probably the most organized company in the game. I was shocked with the amount of support they offered me in between my projects. Suzanne is the best TEFL trainer to date. If you're thinking about taking the course, stop and just do it to it.

TEFL Experience

My experience at Máximo was great. The staf was always helpful and the facilities were beautiful and clean. Most importantly, I really feel confident that I've had sufficient training to begin a career as an English teacher abroad.
