Vietnam April 2023

The highlights of my trip were the people I met on the trip and the teaching which was both varied and challenging. The trips organised by the programme leader to Sa Pa and to Ha Long Bay were insightful and it was great to see different parts of Vietnam and get the feeling of real immersion into Vietnamese culture with the food and hosts. This programme has given me an insight into teaching and shown me a field in which I would not have known how to enter otherwise. It has taught me valuable skills in teaching children too.

Pros
  • Price
  • CV building
  • Independence
Cons
  • Food
  • Cultural differences

GOTOCO Poland was life-changing.

GOTOCO Poland was a life-changing experience. I loved getting to see Warsaw and Krakow, two amazing cities that I had not previously considered visiting. But I am now sure I will be back in both. It is amazing how places can surprise us. I was also deeply grateful visit Auschwitz. The experience was a somber but necessary one, and a reminder of our collective need for justice and to remember our history. I benefited from learning from others about teaching, about my own capacity to teach, and the capacity for kindness between students and their teachers. Angloville is an excellent organization, and I was very fortunate to work with them. I would--and will--do so again in the future. I would recommend GOTOCO because it has facilitated two summers that have both been life-changing--life-changing in different ways, but both have brought me a great deal of joy, expansion of self-knowledge, and deep and enduring friendships.

Gotoco in Colombia

The opportunities afforded by Gotoco to visit a new country, gain teaching experience and meet new people are incredible. I would recommend for anyone wanting to try their hand at teaching and go on an adventure!

I really enjoyed the Gotoco funded trip where we went to Salento and hiked in the Cocora Valley. I also enjoyed watching the children's presentations in our final week of teaching which were an opportunity for them to put together and showcase everything they had learnt!

This programme has been a great way to visit and get to know Colombia and meet new people, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity!

Vietnam short teacher programme

I would recommend Gotoco for the amazing opportunities they offer and the support given before and during the trip. Communication with staff was also very easy and everything was addressed promptly! I loved teaching in Vietnam, and would love to go back and teach some more! I met so many great people and I am so happy with my experience. The additional trips to Ha Long Bay and other amazing places also helped me immerse myself more into the culture of Vietnam. I wish I could still be there now! Thank you Gotoco!

Pros
  • Culture immersion
  • Teaching
  • Confidence booster

Gotoco Thailand

Great organisation that will facilitate the trip of a lifetime and a TESOL qualification. The directors and leaders are lovely, very personable and experienced travellers. I would say that the company is quite disorganised: confirmation of trip details was very late and there were a few issues with hotel bookings and transfers to schools. Additionally, whilst the flights, your accommodation and food is paid for, you have to pay for the flights upfront (for most programmes e.g. Thailand) and then be reimbursed. I really believe in Gotoco’s ethos but they have perhaps over-expanded. Having begun in China, their programme in Bali, for example, is very well-run but not so in Thailand. The TESOL qualification is also quite an effort if you go on your trip in August when the company that administers the qualification are out of office and so you will probably spend the next 10 months trying to complete it yourself.

Pros
  • Immersive travel experience
  • Tesol qualification
  • Made friends
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Lots of admin
  • Disorganised

6 Week Colombia Programme

I spent 6 weeks in Colombia with Gotoco and it was amazing! One of the best experiences of my life. All paid for! And run by the loveliest people. I can't wait to (hopefully) go back!

I had an amazing experience in Chinchina (Caldas), and the host family (Glen and Anna) are great people to meet. The work in the schools is very good fun, the students are lovely, and the school is well run. Gotoco provide free Spanish and Salsa classes (twice a week), and we had the option of playing football every week two. So there was always lots to do!

Pros
  • All paid for
  • Loads of activities
  • Spanish and salsa lessons
Cons
  • Have to teach? Not necessarily a con
  • Complete a TESOL qualification

Volunteer program Thailand

I recommend the teaching English in Thailand volunteer programme to anyone seeking a challenge and childcare/teaching experience. Whether you are looking to make a difference, expand your horizons, or gain valuable teaching experience, this programme offers it all. Thailand has vibrant culture and is a beautiful place to explore. I had the privilege of working alongside like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds who shared a common passions. The friendships and connections formed during this journey make the tough moments worth it.

Pros
  • Culture immersion
  • Bonds with students
  • Meeting likeminded people
Cons
  • Not great food options for vegetarians where I stayed
  • Some of the Thai practices in school can be harsh in comparison to UK schools which can be quite hard
  • Not great transport options in the city I was placed

Highly recommend

I think that altogether this was a really great program, the accommodation in Colombia was amazing and the teaching was good fun. They make sure to give you all the help you need with the teaching so you won't be out of your depth. Flights, accommodation and meals were included so only had to pay for stuff I wanted to buy myself. They organise trips and activities for most weekends and you can also volunteer for other things if you want to. Totally recommend to anyone looking for an affordable way to see more of the world as well as gain a qualification.
