Thailand rural teaching programme

A highlight of the experience was getting to know all the children that I taught at the school and playing games with them every day. I also enjoyed getting into a routine of teaching, biking around the village and having time to chill. Other fun moments were our cooking and Thai language classes.

I also really enjoyed all the trips we took, like Ayutthaya, the weekend in Phichit with the summer camp, and Bangkok.

I think my time at the school was super unique and enriching on a personal level, and a great experience overall to have been able to have partaken in. I also think the organisation of it was good and clear.

The program has built my confidence massively as I dived straight into teaching and had to take initiative which I might have shied from before. Also, I think it improved my communication skills and increased my open mindset as I responded to and learnt from the cultural differences.

Rural Thailand Programme

Teaching English in rural Thailand for two months was an incredible experience and one I will always hold dear! It was so meaningful, seeing the students progress in their English capabilities and immersing yourself into the local Thai culture. It expanded my global perspective and helped increase my cultural awareness and social communication, particularly with the challenge of a language barrier. Picking up some Thai language skills was incredibly useful and Gotoco provided an amazing experience that immersed us that authentic experience. I recommend Gotoco to anyone with a passion for education and culture!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
When buying things, don’t think of prices in your home country. It’s all relative and you will appreciate everything more when you’re shopping like a local.
Pros
  • Language skills
  • Educational practice
  • Social connections
Cons
  • Language barriers if you make no effort
  • Extremely hot country
  • Mosquitoes and bugs if you don’t like them

Gotoco TEFL placement in Vietnam

I had a brilliant experience with Gotoco in Vietnam. The program was really well-organised, and I felt supported from start to finish. Teaching in local schools was both rewarding and eye-opening—I gained so much confidence and learned to adapt quickly to new situations. I also made great friends through the program and had the chance to really immerse myself in Vietnamese culture, from the food to the festivals. Overall, it was a challenging but unforgettable experience that’s helped me grow personally and professionally.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I’d really recommend getting involved with the local community as much as you can—it makes the experience so much richer. The teaching staff are incredibly supportive and welcoming, which makes adapting to the new environment a lot easier. Also, make the most of the weekend trips available from the school—they’re a great way to explore Vietnam, bond with others on the program, and take a break from the classroom.
Pros
  • Supportive staff (both the school and Gotoco)
  • Cultural immersion
  • Professional development
Cons
  • 3 months could’ve been longer! I loved it

Thailand 6 Month Fellowship

The 6-month program in Thailand provided a valuable chance to gain hands-on teaching experience and fully immerse myself in the local culture. I grew both personally and professionally while receiving strong support from the program team.

That said, being based in a rural area with limited time off during the term, and accommodation that lacked cooking facilities, made some aspects challenging. Overall, I recommend this program to anyone looking for a meaningful international teaching adventure!

What was your funniest moment?
When an elephant came to school and we got involved in a play!
Pros
  • Immersive Cultural Experience
  • Professional Skill Development
  • Strong Support Network
Cons
  • Limited time off to explore during school term
  • Limited cooking facilities
  • Remote location

Gotoco Thailand 6 week TEFL - July-August 2024

The Gotoco Thailand 6-week programme was an amazing experience! Alongside completing a TEFL course, you have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience teaching at a school and also have free time to travel around the country! It was such a unique experience that allowed you to see a new country through a different lens than a typical tourist, providing the opportunity for personal and professional growth. It was also a great chance to meet other like-minded people in your cohort as well as meet new friends from a different country. I was personally placed at a school near the Cambodian border, so had the opportunity to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia during one of the weekends - a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

During the 6 weeks of teaching, I loved having the opportunity to visit local and national landmarks. At my placement school, the teacher who was the main point of contact, Kru Lek, ensured that we were able to see local landmarks and immerse ourselves in the culture, not just of Thailand but of the local region, Sisaket.

Overall, I felt that, through the programme, I got to have new experiences and learn about a new culture as well as about myself in a way that I haven't been able to do before. I also think the programme helped me to grow in confidence and become more comfortable as a leader, be it as a teacher or just in a group setting in general. I think that the programme helped me to improve my communication skills and ability to work and travel independently.

I also appreciate that Gotoco facilitates wider participation, allowing people from a range of backgrounds to have an experience that would not otherwise be available to them. I would highly recommend it!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried insects for the first time, in particular cricket!
Pros
  • Building independence
  • Strengthening socia skills
  • Gain experience teaching and leading a class
Cons
  • Sometimes it was hard to balance completing the TEFL with activities planned at your placement school
  • Keep in mind that some placement schools are very rural and it isn't the easiest to travel places by yourself
  • Sometimes it took a while to get a response to queries via email

Gotoco placements go beyond classroom experience

If you are considering teaching and living abroad, I cannot recommend gotoco enough!

Gotoco offers a wide range of programmes in different cities across Vietnam, so there is something for everyone.

As for my placement, I volunteered as a kindergarten teacher in Ho Chi Minh City. This placement helped me gain new skills, qualifications, friends and all while living in a new country.

The placement enabled me to connect with the kids, local people and culture in a way that is not possible through short and rushed trips. I have been the kind to cram as much as possible in a short trip but this experience made me aware of more impactful ways of travelling and connecting with people and cultures.

This programme has made me see that there is a host of opportunities around the world, beyond the conventional career routes.

So for me, Gotoco has been more than a teaching and TEFL placement and I hope more young people could benefit from opportunities such as this.

Great base to volunteer in India

I had a brilliant placement at the school which I miss to this day! It was fantastic to be able to live in India as a local for 6 months, being supported by many people. My biggest challenge was creating content for my students, but I also loved the flexibility we had in that. I always wanted to visit India, and I’m grateful to have been able to be there for 6 months. I tried so many different foods, experienced a different climate, learnt about a different culture and way of life, attended local festivals, visited beaches, churches and temples and made new friends.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

Pros
  • Meet new people
  • Live abroad
  • Experience a different culture
Cons
  • Lack of course content in school

Thailand

I would definitely recommend this programme because it offers an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on teaching experience while immersing yourself in a new culture. Teaching in Thailand helped me build confidence, improve my classroom management skills, and adapt my teaching style to different learning needs .One of the best parts of the experience was the connections I made-with students, fellow teachers, and locals. I felt welcomed into the community, and it was amazing to see my students grow in confidence as they learned. Living in Thailand for six weeks also gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture, try local food, and experience daily life in a completely different environment.
