Great summer teaching English in Yangshuo, China

Had the best 6 weeks teaching in Yangshuo - met some great people who are all likeminded and all up for a challenge, beautiful place to be and learnt a lot about myself due to being pushed in at the deep end and expected to teach. Yes, a fair amount is expected of you but for people who love a challenge and experiencing new cultures and travel I would highly recommend; also an easy way of seeing some of China! If you want to try something completely different and something that will make you stand out on your CV then apply!!!

Good Fun

Yeah I had a good time in China. I met lots of interesting people and had an experience I could not have had otherwise in my life. The food was nice and the alcohol was cheap. I must warn you that there is quite a big language barrier and that that can cause some problems. Teaching is great fun and a useful experience. I travelled with a friend which definitely made it more enjoyable. Thank you gotoco.

What would you improve about this program?
LESS STEPS IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING TO CHINA AND GETTING YOUR DEPOSIT BACK. IT'S UNBELIEVABLY LONG

Great summer experience in Beijing

Gotoco placed me with a summer camp in Beijing where I was able to explore the city and work with 4-7 year old children. My stay and food were covered by the program, without me having to pay any fees. I worked for four weeks at IDEAS camp Beijing, where I had been placed by Gotoco. The workdays there were long, and the commute to the school took over an hour, but the work was also sometimes very rewarding. The biggest challenge was probably that not everyone at the actual camp could or wanted to speak English, however the staff at Gotoco all did and were incredibly friendly and helpful. Altogether, Gotoco allowed me to spend a whole month in China and helped me with the visa application process and provided support throughout.

Emma’s China experience

I had a fantastic summer in China, at IDEAS camp, Changshu. I was able to build on existing communication skills and develop new ones as a result of being exposed to so many new experiences. My time with the campers was extremely rewarding and I was not only able to teach, but learn about myself in process. The camp brought various counsellors from all over the globe together, it was a great opportunity to share and learn about a variety of cultures. Although the work could be full-on at times, being around fabulous people in a completely new country made it all worthwhile. I would definitely recommend the experience.

Amazing summer

I had an amazing summer - this is a great way to learn so much about the Chinese culture in a way that also helps you to develop your own skills! It's not an 'easy' ride, you really do have to teach classes from the very beginning, but if you're ready for a personal and professional challenge then I would 100% recommend this programme. Living with a host family was a great way to learn more about the local culture whilst still living comfortably. I guess it's a lottery with where you get placed, but ultimately I really enjoyed my placement and met some great people out there too.

Very rewarding - go for it!

Good experience!

The overall experience benefited me in a few ways. For one, I was able to be in touch with China. Although I was born in China, I was never able to explore China as much as I'd liked to. However, living in China for the past few weeks and working with local teachers and students, I really got to understand China in a deeper level. For example, I asked about the day-to-day lives of the locals, what they enjoyed doing, how the economy was working out for them, and so much more. Not only that, I met many friends who would be my lifelong contacts. Because they were mature individuals who could provide me new perspectives in life as well. Lastly, the teaching experience challenged me to try out new teaching methods and materials that would benefit students learning a new language. To conclude, I had a great experience working in China.

What would you improve about this program?
I do recommend Gotoco to a friend. Because Gotoco made the whole process of volunteer abroad smooth and easy. The only downside was BOB wasn't too organized in terms of what class levels we would get training in and what classes we were actually teaching. If they could improve on that, it would be great!

Amazing experience

This project provides an amazing opportunity to immerse in Chinese culture, meet wonderful people and gain valuable work experience. A huge advantage of this project is a fact that it is free of charge and the only fees I had to cover were travel expenses. Even inexperienced person is more than welcomed to join the project, which is great news for any young volunteer that does not have any work experience yet. I would definitely recommend this program.
