Think Pacific Youth Empowerment

I recently completed the Think Pacific Youth Empowerment project and I can honestly say it was the best thing I’ve ever done. A truly life changing experience! I have made so many memories and learnt so many lessons, about my self and the Fijian culture, that I will forever carry with me. Living in a village was really daunting, but the love and openness of Fijians is next to nothing, you truly arrive a stranger and leave as family, creating a second home. I couldn’t recommend it enough! Vinaka Think Pacific :)

Amazing

I don’t have any negative comments about this project, it is the best thing I have ever done and I am so glad I did it!!! A life changing opportunity!
I stayed with the most amazing family and made the most brilliant friends.
The experience is one you cannot even explain you just have to be there!
A worry of mine is that I would have felt homesick, but when you are there you are just so busy you don’t have time to feel homesick, in the sense you have busy days, fun evenings, and activity packed weekends.
You are always doing something fun to distract yourself.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Get yourself stuck in!!
Immerse yourself and just have fun, experience the food, the culture and the company.
Pros
  • Confidence
  • Friendship
  • Experience
Cons
  • Home sick
  • Repetitive food
  • Early mornings

Think Pacific - youth empowerment expedition!

An incredible, once in a lifetime opportunity, to be completely immersed and empowered by such a beautiful culture, made up of gorgeous people and environment. Think Pacific provided the foundations for international collaboration on global topics with youth of the community, as well equal opportunity to explore the landscape and learn about traditions. From hearing stories from the villagers, eating new food and meeting other volunteers from across the globe, you’ll learn so much about yourself and the world around you. It has broaden my perspective and changed every aspect of my life for the better! Vinaka! 🇫🇯🌏

The experience of a lifetime!!

My experience in Fiji was truely unmatched, completing a youth empowerment project was so fulfilling and I enjoyed the amazing opportunities to learn about the Fijian culture. The youths feedback on the project was amazing and they seemed to have got so much out of it. I would definitely recommend Think Pacific to anyone interested, it was amazing time and I also made many lifelong friends & memories. I hope to visit my village family in the future, they were the best, having the opportunity to live with a family really made the difference and we became apart of the community.

Community Build 2024

I did the community build in Nasibitu in August. Living with the families was so good, not only have I learnt so much about their culture and way of life but I met people I will miss forever. Leaving in the worst and hardest part of a project. The build was so great, painting was the most fun part as we could add our own touch to the build, seeing it come together in just 3 weeks was incredible. The excursions with the locals on weekends were my favourite - bilibili racing was definitely my highlight of the month!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Casava - Them fried as chips were amazing!!!
Pros
  • Confidence building
  • Teamwork
  • Independence
Cons
  • Homesickness
  • Illness
  • Loneliness at times

Once in a lifetime experience

The Think Pacific Fiji volunteer trip was the best experience I have ever undertaken. You get to immerse yourself into the true Fijian way of life, living with some of the kindest, loving and caring people you will ever meet.
I learnt so much from the culture courses such as farming, weaving and gender roles.
The opportunity to lead workshops sessions was equally enjoyable, giving us a chance to learn with the Fijian youth important matters such as the climate, public health, mental health, leadership, business and sports. These were all enjoyable sessions which allowed each group covering the session to put their own twist on the lesson plan. Sessions involved lots of activities including acting/role play, making/creating and even a creating pretend stalls for a fair!
Free time allows time to truly bond with families, the children and each other as volunteers. Fijians love sport so there is lots of opportunity to play sports such as volleyball and touch rugby!! We even set up a sports day which was a day jam packed with activities.

Weekends are equally enjoyable with Think Pacific organising trips such as the seeing a waterfall, going to the beach and visiting a river in which we helped youth build a bilibili raft and catch fish!

I couldnt recommend this trip enough - it has stuck with me in my heart; the love and warmth you will feel from the Fijians is like no other. This truly is a once in a lifetime experience as each village is only ever visited once! And each memory made will be totally individual to you

What was your funniest moment?
The talent show; this brought volunteers and youth together to each perform in groups or in pairs different acts such as singings and dancing.
Everyone really went for it!

I also think some of the funniest moments were shared between me and my Fijian brother singing songs we made up together.
Pros
  • Immerse yourself in true Fijian culture
  • Meet lovely people with similar interests
  • Make friends and have a Fijian family for life

Life changing experience

I took part in the one month mental health project in Fiji. This month was by far the best month I ever lived. I met people that I will never forget and will cherish forever. I’ve never experienced such a welcoming community and such love in my life. As much as we raised awareness about mental health within the Fijian village, us volunteers definitely learnt more from our village than they learnt from us. This project was soul healing and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I wish I could do it again.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was definitely during the village nights all the youth would dance and put talc powder on each other. My coco (uncle) was the headman and we were having a talc fight.
Pros
  • Amazing people
  • Delicious food
  • No phone signal in my village
Cons
  • Insects
