Program Impact

Our Ghana projects are set with community leaders and schools. Volunteers support small-group reading and classroom assistance, youth sports and PE, reforestation and plastics clean-ups, and sea turtle patrols and hatchery care on the coast. We track simple outcomes (class support hours, trees planted, turtle nest data, clean-up bags, etc.) and share updates with volunteers and partners. Ethical guidelines (wildlife-care protocols, safeguarding, role training) ensure meaningful, responsible impact.

Great experience in Ghana

I had a great experience in Ghana. You can read or watch videos for Ghana but nothing will prepare you for the beauty of this place. Everyone is so kind, sometimes a little too much but you get used to it and learn how to handle it. The program is well organised and structured so you directly see the impact you are making. I loved playing with the kids and they were such a joy to be around.

The people you meet, if it is the people working there or other volunteer are amazing. I build such good friendships and the memories will stay with me forever.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I stayed for 4 weeks and it was just before Christmas. I can tell you that when i arrived there everyone told me you will want to stay longer than 4 weeks and that almost everyone stays longer than planned. I didn't believe them at first but after 2 weeks of figuring out and getting comfortable with the way of living i realised i was sad to leave. So i would advise you to not plan to far ahead and see how long you want and can stay because you will not want to leave after a short time. Give yourself the possibility to stay longer.
Pros
  • Good organisation
  • Great support
  • You can see the impact you are making
Cons
  • You have to cook for yourself (saying as a very lazy person who doesn't like to cook)

Amazing!!

I really enjoyed my stay here! I had so much fun with the volunteers and the coordinators, love too Junior and Rii.

I made so many new friends, it’s crazy. The project it self is really well organized. The balance between working and free time is really good. The night activities that they organized are really fun! And yeah of course the turtles are magical. To release those tiny animals, is so special. And also the other work you do, feels like if you are giving something back to nature, world, earth or whatever :))

I can really really recommend this!!!

What was your funniest moment?
All the family dinners and bonfires. Just all the talkings I laughed my ass off!
Pros
  • Turtles
  • Going to Yogis bar
  • Junior, Rii and the volunteers
Cons
  • Mosquitoes

Best experience of my life

I wanted to join a project in a country with a completely different culture, but I also wanted a 'bridge'—something I could relate to. In my case, that was football. I set out to learn about a new way of life, not really knowing what to expect. But from the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with such warmth, it felt as though I’d known everyone for years. Little did I know, this was the start of the most beautiful three months of my life. The kindness and love I experienced were unlike anything I had ever known. I was struck by how people found joy in what they had, rather than focusing on what they lacked. Every day, I looked forward to seeing the students and teachers at the school and immersing myself in their traditions. Even when challenges arose, the school was always open to compromise, and our coordinators, Dom and Becky, were always there to help us find solutions. Beyond the project, I met wonderful new volunteers almost every week. Whether we were cooking together, exploring different parts of Ghana on weekends, or just having a game night, the bond was instant. My time in Ghana was unforgettable thanks to the incredible coordinating team, my fellow volunteers, the welcoming local community, and the stunning nature. I would recommend this project to anyone!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The traffic is a bit of a culture shock if it's your first time, but you soon learn how to deal with it.
Pros
  • the culture is amazingly kind
  • bonds with new friends
  • food is so good
Cons
  • Vegetarian food is available, but they rarely ensure that the meat is kept completely separate from the vegetarian dishes.

Medase.

I spent a total of four months during my stays with Atlas, and they were one of the most enriching months of my life. A deep immersion in the local culture and the feeling of contributing to a shared effort made the experience truly meaningful. If you want to give real purpose to your holidays, this is an excellent option. Many thanks to Dominic, our friend and the father of the Atlas family, without whom this trip would not have been the same. I’ll be back, and I already can’t wait to return. ;).

What was your funniest moment?
Trying to speak the local language with the kids is always fun !

Enjoy the beach life in a small Ghana village

The coordinators on site are really helpful from before you even arrive in Ghana to the point where you unfortunately have to leave. The days are well structured with projects, breaks, and time for fun or relaxation in the afternoon, and the coordinators are good at coming up with activities to do.

You should be prepared for the fact that the place is very rural and located in a small village, but the community is really nice, so get to know them and you will love it!
I really loved it and visited it twice.

What was your funniest moment?
We had a cooking lesson and we helped pounding the fufu, which is a local food that looks like dough. It was a funny moment to try to pound it without hitting Junior’s fingers while he was folding the dough.
Pros
  • Cultural exchange
  • Nature
  • Local community
Cons
  • Very rural
  • Other tourist places are far away

An amazing experience!

I've been wanting to try this experience for a while and wasn't sure what to expect. Once I arrived, I was greeted wonderfully by the team and other volunteers. In addition to reforestation activities, I happened to support the coach of the local school team. One of the other beautiful aspects is sharing daily life with the other volunteers. The opportunity to help in any way I could and share daily life with my mates is unique and unforgettable! I'll be happy to return sooner or later to give my support once again!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Enjoy the time you will stay the most as you can, because time doesn't came back!
Pros
  • Once in a life experience
  • Best peoples

Adventure with Atlas

My time with Atlas Volunteers in Ghana was an amazing experience. I took part in the education program for a little over six weeks. I had an incredibly meaningful time and felt extremely welcome. The locals are truly amazing—such kind and warm-hearted people who made my experience even better. Even when they have very little, they are always willing to help or offer whatever they have.

Being able to make a difference for the children or the local community, even if it was just a small one, made me feel very grateful.

Atlas had everything well organized, which felt very reassuring. It is a great organization that makes sure you have nothing to worry about. Even during my stay, Dom and Becky were always there to help me or answer any questions I had.

Living in the house with other volunteers was also a great experience.
Being able to share such an incredible journey with others is very special, and some great friendships will definitely come out of it.
The weekend trips in which you get to explore the rest of this amazing country are so much fun and I wish I had been able to participate in even more of these, because Ghana has lots to offer.

In conclusion, if you are reading this and still doubting whether you should take this step—do it! You will have a once in a lifetime experience and will forever be glad you decided to do it. Meeting all the people I've met was a privilege and being able to do something so meaningful was very fulfilling.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I know it can be scary to do something new or something challenging. But please, take the leap. Get out of your comfort zone and give yourself this opportunity. You will forever be grateful for it!

One Month Stay

I came to Kwahu, Ghana almost a year ago in January. I stayed for a month and had the best time of my life. My experience at the primary school was eye opening and gave me everlasting memories. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, so I will definitely be going back again soon! I learned some twi as well, and indulged in delicious fufu and jollof rice. I immediately felt welcomed by everyone and made great connections with people I still talk to. I wish to go back next during Easter time to experience the paragliding and festive parties in Kwahu. The weekend trips to Cape Coast and Kumasi were incredible. I enjoyed learning more every day about the Ghanaian culture and visiting new places across the country.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Expect to learn a lot about the Ghanaian culture and try all the delicious food.
