Program Impact

Our Ghana projects are set with community leaders and schools. Volunteers support small-group reading and classroom assistance, youth sports and PE, reforestation and plastics clean-ups, and sea turtle patrols and hatchery care on the coast. We track simple outcomes (class support hours, trees planted, turtle nest data, clean-up bags, etc.) and share updates with volunteers and partners. Ethical guidelines (wildlife-care protocols, safeguarding, role training) ensure meaningful, responsible impact.

Atlas Volunteering - Reforestation, Education and Plastic Upcycling

My time in Ghana with Atlas Volunteering was an incredible experience. The support from signing up to returning home to the UK was amazing. I was surrounded by like-minded people and loved the balance between volunteering and experiencing Ghana. Being able to mix different programmes made it even more special, especially the different cultures and landscapes I was able to see! The optional trips on the weekends were a great opportunity to see more of Ghana and I loved trying to learn some twi! Big shoutout to Dom, Becky and Sam who made my time in Ghana unforgettable! Medaase Paa, Atlas! 🇬🇭

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Amazing and interesting time in Ghana

The sea turle project in Ghana was interesting and fun. You can make impact over there.
I enjoyed supporting this project. The staff was amazing, fun and supporting.
The nature around it was great, with a beautiful and clean (because of our clean up’s) beach. Bigger cities are further away, which was not a problem for me.
A big recommendation for volunteers with love for nature and animals.
The area felt very safe. I have walked many times trough the village after dark which was not a problem at all. Very kind people and especially many sweet kids.

Volunteering with Atlas

I had a great time in Ghana, that I'll always remember. I was working at reforestation and farming. I really enjoyed both, it's hard work but if you enjoy being outside with others, it's really fun and the physical work can even be relaxing for the mind. Also it's not too exhausting, since we took many breaks and you don't work so many hours.

The social activities were also really nice, I especially enjoyed our weekly family and game nights, but also the partys for example. A great ontop were our weekend trips to others places in ghana, you don't have to attend them but for me they were so fun and also important to truly experience Ghana.

Furthermore the staff is very friendly and involved, it's obvious they care a lot about the Project and volunteers.
Also overall as a young woman I felt surprisingly safe during the whole trip and I'd always do it again.

Ghana 2025

Amazing experience! Everyone in the project setup was friendly and welcoming , good social activities in the evenings. Met people from all across the world with similar interests. Lots of free time in evenings and weekend.
Felt like made an impact by providing physical education lessons to children who were super fun and very confident.

Notably the people of Ghana so helpful and friendly really made the experience what it was. Would definitely recommend this to anyone thinking of looking for a adventurous volunteering trip.

What was your funniest moment?
Meeting everyone at the hostel, night out in Accra.

Ghana changed me - for real

Sea turtles, sea, bonfires, a safe neighborhood, surfing, great travel companions and an amazing project coordinators team. What could I ask more? Well, the true sensation of being useful to the planet and the knowledge that there is another whole way to live our life, very much different from Europe. This is the greatest gift to me. Once you volunteer you don't go back!

I really recommend a visit to the nearby village. The people there really show a European how different everyday life can be and how people can be happy with much less.

One last special mention to Nemo, our baby turtle, the only survivor. I won't ever forget how he went to the ocean despite his loneliness and certain difficulties.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Bioluminescences in the ocean. Did not expect that at all!
Pros
  • Great support from coordinators
  • Very safe area
  • Going to sleep to the sound of ocean waves
Cons
  • A bit isolated, you need a Cab for almost everything
  • Shared bathroom, outside the room. Not necessarily a con but might be uncomfortable to some.
  • Single rooms not available. Might be a problem to some, although I did not mind room sharing

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

I spent one week volunteering in Cape 3 Points, Ghana, in the sea turtle conservation program, and the experience was truly unbeatable.

Being able to see newly hatched baby turtles and release them into the ocean has been, without a doubt, one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

In addition to everything related to turtle conservation, the program also includes other activities with the local community, which are incredibly enriching and allow you to get to know the community and local way of life much more closely. This added a lot of depth and meaning to the overall experience.

Rii, the coordinator, is an extremely kind, friendly, and approachable person. He explains everything incredibly well and makes you feel at home from the very first day, which really sets the tone for the whole program.

The camp where we stayed is very comfortable, beautifully located, and has everything you need to feel at ease during your stay. The setting is absolutely spectacular: a truly pristine and stunning beach, the kind you rarely find anymore. On top of that, there are plenty of options for activities in the area, such as hiking, surfing, yoga, and more, which makes the experience even richer.

Overall, this was an unforgettable, meaningful, and deeply rewarding experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in conservation, nature, and authentic community-based volunteering.

Unforgetable

It was a really great experience. The sports program allowed us to get close to the local population and share our passion with them in their school. Life is truly incredible in this region, and being so close to the people is a unique experience, especially when they are so incredibly kind. The team on site who took care of us was also amazing; you want for nothing, and they are always there when you need them. I only spent two weeks in Ghana, but they were two weeks I will never forget, and I can't wait to go back.

A 10/10 Experience

I spent 1.5 weeks at the sea turtle project at Cape Three Points. The local coordinators were super supportive and made great effort to explain why this work is so important for the turtles and what impact it has. There was always plenty of free time to balance out our work, whether by relaxing in the hammocks, drinking fresh coconuts, going for walks on that beautiful beach, having drinks and playing games with the team at the nearby resort, cooking local food together,...

All in all, my time there was definitely too short, I wish I could have stayed longer (and am already thinking about coming back one day) and would definitely recommend this program! It will leave you with many wonderful memories.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Saw whales!!
Pros
  • lot of once-in-a-lifetime moments
  • beautiful nature
  • great staff
Cons
  • you'll find sand everywhere ;)
