About Program

Four million people in Morocco live below the poverty line, three million of them in rural areas, yet many families living just above the poverty line also face severe inequalities in income distribution, health care, and living standards. In Morocco, the average years of schooling for a child is far below other countries in the region and even further below the global expected standards for children ages 5-16.

In Morocco, only 20% of girls have a secondary education compared with 30% of boys. Contribute to programs that encourage girls to fulfill their potential, while delivering public health solutions to improve overall well-being. Women undertake more than 7 times as much unpaid work than men. We’re working to empower women through education and support for economic activities.

Fantastic Program

Cross Cultural Solutions is an incredible way to immerse yourself in a different culture while simultaneously giving back in a meaningful way! Living with fellow volunteers and fellow Moroccans in a "homebase" provided a great, casual way to learn about Moroccan people, cooking, culture, etc, while making new friends!

I loved the program, staff, and volunteering in Rabat!

This was an amazing experience I will never forget. They really help you adjust and feel prepared, so I wasn't nervous arriving in Morocco. The staff was extraordinary and super friendly. Of course, you still should do your own research no matter where you go, along with the resources they give you. But this program was great!

Catherine Matloub, 25 years old, went to Morocco following graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently a law student at the University of Chicago Law School.

Day in the Life of Catherine Matloub - Volunteer in Morocco

Morning: A typical day in Morocco consisted of waking up around 7:30-8am, having breakfast with the other volunteers, and then heading off to our placements. I volunteered at a children’s hospital for the first few weeks, and then at the Lala Meryem orphanage for the remainder of my time there. We would spend a few hours at our placements and then return to Homebase mid-afternoon for lunch.

Afternoon and evening: After lunch we would sometimes have cultural activities planned, these consisted of such things as Moroccan cooking classes, trips around Rabat to historical/tourist sites, Arabic lessons, etc. However, we were often quite exhausted after our placements and would either just relax around Homebase with the other volunteers or go out around Rabat on our own (often to the central market). The Moroccan staff that we lived with was always very happy to teach us anything we asked them, hence an afternoon cooking lesson on how to cook beignets (French donuts)!

Highlights: The program is very flexible and we were given the option of going to a second placement in the afternoon if we wanted to. Additionally, I switched my placement halfway through simply because I wanted to see what the orphanage was like. One of my fellow volunteers also created her own placement while we were there because she stumbled upon a great opportunity.

During the weekends we traveled around Morocco in individual groups. We went hiking in the Rif Mountains, went to Casablanca, had a relaxing weekend in a beach town, went to Marrakesh, and Fez. My favorite, and most memorable, weekend excursion was a camel trek through the Sahara Desert where we camped in Bedouin tents.

What is your favorite travel memory?

Taking Cross-Cultural Solutions' volunteers on a camel ride to the desert to spend the night in a camp between the sand dunes.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Working for Cross-Cultural Solutions is a great opportunity to meet up with people from a large variety of countries and cultures.

The experience has taught me that as human beings we have a lot in common and we can live in peace and work together towards a better world for future generations.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

A young volunteer told me that volunteering abroad in Morocco allowed her to learn more about herself - her strengths, limitations, knowledge - it changed her in every aspect.

Before joining the program, her parents and some friends discouraged her from going to Morocco because they viewed it as unsafe for a young woman. Once she was here, she realized that it's safer than the city she grew up in and even though some women in Morocco wear the veil (hijab) they are well educated.

While she studied Islam and focused on Muslim women in her studies back home, coming to Morocco and interacting with its people helped her better understand the culture and people, and even corrected some of the misjudgments she had.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

If I get a chance, I would like to go to Ghana or Tanzania. As a Moroccan (North African) the African component of our identity is not stressed!

In general, Moroccans see themselves more as Arabs, Muslims, Mediterraneans... than Africans. Also, I am amazed by the simplicity of life in many African countries.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

It's the balance between satisfying the community's needs and the volunteer's needs. We always assess the impact of our volunteers on the communities we work in and at the same time listen to the feedback of the volunteers.

I am proud of my team when I read volunteer's positive evaluations and/or when our partners in the community ask us for more volunteers.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I think human resources. It's the warmth of people and their openness to others that make the biggest difference.

Our staff is trained to deal with the different kinds of people we welcome in our program, make sure that they work in a safe environment, and provide them with the support they need to accomplish their mission.
