My summer in Beijing

My summer in Beijing was the first time I ever felt truly independent. As a 16-year-old from a small town, I was nervous about traveling alone, but from the moment I landed, the GAC coordinators made me feel safe and supported. The Mandarin classes were surprisingly fun—we learned through games and real-life scenarios like ordering bubble tea or asking for directions. My host family treated me like their own daughter, teaching me how to make dumplings and even helping me shop for clothes at the local market. The best part was bonding with other teens from around the world while exploring iconic sites like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. I returned home not only with better Mandarin skills but with lifelong friends and the confidence to take on new challenges. This program is perfect for any high school student ready for an adventure!

They warned me about culture shock, but nothing prepared me for the wonderful chaos of my summer in Beijing.

As a 16-year-old who'd never traveled alone, I expected to feel lost - instead, I found myself navigating subway systems and bargaining in markets like I'd lived there forever. The morning language classes actually stuck because we'd immediately use what we learned while exploring temple grounds or ordering street food with our program coordinators. My host sister became my partner in crime, teaching me TikTok dances while I showed her American slang. We got hilariously lost trying to find the best bubble tea, cried laughing at our pronunciation mistakes, and formed a squad with students from five different countries. This wasn't just a trip - it was my first real adventure, and I returned home with more confidence, new family, and the sudden ability to actually understand my Mandarin homework.

My summer in Beijing through GAC's high school program was absolutely incredible! As a 16-year-old traveling alone for the first time, I was nervous, but the program coordinators made me feel safe and supported from the moment I arrived. The Mandarin classes were actually really fun and interactive, and I loved getting to visit a local Chinese high school to meet students my age. My host family was so welcoming - we cooked dumplings together and they even helped me with my Chinese homework. The weekend trips to the Great Wall and Forbidden City were unforgettable.
