An unforgettable internship experience in Tokyo

My internship in Tokyo was an amazing experience, both professionally and personally. I had the opportunity to work in an international environment with French and Japanese colleagues, which helped me improve my communication skills and learn how to adapt to different cultures and ways of working.
During my internship, I worked mainly on business development and marketing activities, including market and competitor research and supporting projects related to potential clients and business opportunities. This allowed me to develop my critical thinking, research and professional communication skills while gaining practical experience in an international business environment.
Living in Tokyo for two months was also an incredible opportunity. I was able to discover Japanese culture, travel around Japan and become much more independent and confident. It was sometimes challenging to adapt to such a different environment, but that was also one of the most valuable parts of the experience.

Overall, I am very grateful for this opportunity and I would definitely recommend an internship abroad in Tokyo to anyone who wants to grow professionally, experience a completely different culture and step outside their comfort zone

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar part of my experience was adapting to a completely different working and cultural environment in Japan. It was my first time working in such an international setting, with colleagues from different countries and cultures. At first, adapting to different ways of communicating and working was challenging, but it quickly became one of the most valuable parts of my experience. It helped me become more independent, adaptable and confident, both professionally and personally.
Pros
  • International work environment
  • Living and working in Tokyo
  • Personal and professional growth
What other participants should know
  • The experience went by too quickly

Architecture summer 6 week program

Participating in a professional architecture internship in Japan allowed me to experience full immersion into Tokyo’s world-renowned efficiency culture.

Working under Japanese architectural standards refined my attention to detail, from millimetric plan specifications and flawless physical and digital models to rigorous material and color approvals. Also, the firm’s global environment, operating across Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and Mandarin, significantly broadened my cross-cultural collaboration skills and global perspective.

Beyond the studio, exploring Tokyo and four additional Japanese cities alongside international colleagues turned personal goals into lifelong memories.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Adaptability and resilience are essential for navigating unfamiliar systems, languages, and professional norms, especially here in Japan. Keep in mind that for this particular program the ability to maintain balance between demanding schedules and the warm summer climate are proved to be strong assets.

Also, don't be afraid if you have no experience. Even as a first-time international traveler, stepping out of my comfort zone and keeping an open mind allowed me to successfully achieve all professional deliverables and personal milestones.
Pros
  • Smooth and straightforward placement process
  • Reliably available and friendly support staff on site
  • Comfortable, clean and well located accommodation facilities
What other participants should know
  • Long working hours with some risk of overtime
  • Hot, humid climate that may be difficult to bear
  • Steep learning curve for cultural adaptation

Fantastic experience in the heart of Japan

I decided to do an internship abroad through Absolute internships with a question, "can I live and work in Japan comfortably?" and I can say with confidence that the experience they provided absolutely delivered a resounding "Yes!". I was delivered a painless process duing selection, and they found me the perfect company that I could use my skills as an english and history double major to make a positive impact that was appreciated by my host company (Yukari Japan Tour, a tour company specializing in sake brewery tours) and showed me how I can be valued for the work I can do. The expereicne was made fun and relaxed with fantastic coordinators that cared about the work they were doing with us and who seemed to genuinely want the best for us as both representatives of Absolute Internships and as peers. I made some wonderful memories with both my fellow interns and my host ccompany, and I will forever be grateful to Absolute Internships for fascilitating the making of them.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The deeps culture of skating and street art in and around Shinjuku and Shibua. Made me feel weirdly at home.
Pros
  • Central location in Shinjuku with easy access to trans, restaraunts, entertainment and Konbinis
  • Very easy and painless placement process
  • Very good coordinators and helpful staff through the entire process
What other participants should know
  • small outreach in at my university that limited my awareness of the program
  • sharing a room
  • fewer intern mixers and social events than I would like

Internship

I had a great experience during my internship in Japan this summer. I got to work in an international office, meet people from different backgrounds, and experience working in Tokyo.

During the internship, I worked on financial products, Excel workbooks, research, and legal documents. Everyone in the office was really friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better.

Overall, I learned a lot, became more comfortable working in both English and Japanese, and really enjoyed my time there. I’m very glad I had this opportunity!

Good internship and city but everything else was bad

Overall, the internship placement was very good, but the on-site program coordinators were terrible. The internship was in my area of study and provided a alot of professional growth, but the included trips left a alot to be desired. We were put in a hostel during one of our trips and were constantly nagged by the program coordinators if any of us broke a rule, even by one inch. We were constantly shouted at, and it created a tough environment. There was one coordinator who was respectful the whole time, but the others had an obviously poor attitude and should not be leading us, as it was most of our first time in Japan.

Overall, the program coordinator's attitude had a poor reflection of Absolute Internship and created a tense, zero-tolerance environment throughout the duration of the program. To Absolute Internship, hire coordinators with a good attitude. The crazy part is that there are very few negative reviews. I would advise using Absolute Internship only to be placed in an internship and do everything else on your own.

Response from Absolute Internship

Hi William,

Thanks for taking the time to share these extra details. It’s wonderful to hear that the internship itself was a great fit for your studies and helped you grow professionally, that’s exactly what we aim for.

However, we’re sorry to hear that the environment outside of work felt so tense for you. Navigating Japan for the first time is a huge milestone, and we always want our students to feel supported, not stressed. While our coordinators do have to look out for the group's safety and follow local guidelines, it is never our intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable. We're glad to hear one of our team members stood out positively, but we always want communication to be respectful across the board.

We also appreciate your feedback regarding the hostel and the group trips. We want our travel experiences to be a fun, cultural break from work, so we are passing your notes about the accommodations and the team's approach straight to our program managers for internal review.

Thank you again for being upfront with us, and we wish you all the best with your career.

4-Week Experience

Absolute internship was a great experience. There were initial stresses with the internship aspect since I didn't get placed until the day I arrived in Tokyo, but I ended up meeting some incredible people and learning lots of new skills at work. Additionally, the staff at Absolute who were with us (program coordinators) in Tokyo were such lovely people. They were able to be reached very quickly and were very organized during planned trips with all the students. Furthermore, their friendly demeanor eased the nerves of going to a foreign country! The most memorable moments were the unplanned, spontaneous trips and memories made outside of work with other students. The group I came in with are some of my favorite people, and I still am in contact with them today! Highly recommend!

I was placed in Tokyo, Japan the opportunities this granted me while out there have become core memories for the rest of my life. I worked remotely which was surprisingly helpful as I could manage my work a long side trips. It meant the world to me to see parts or my childhood like Pokémon and Nintendo all around me. So from day one I could tell it was going to be an unforgettable trip. Additionally, the friends that I made along the way elevated my experience even more!

Japan is a Wonderland

The company and the people was the best thing about my experience I met so many amazing people in Japan and created such special bonds with everyone! I could not begin to describe how rewarding the whole experience was. As a Computer Science student at "Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education" I worked at "Irvine Systems" company in Tokyo from August 2024 to Decemeber 2024 I found this opportunity through the internship agency "Absolute", it was so much fun, I learned a lot of things, developed new skills, grew as a person, and made many great friendships while I was there. So many memories that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Japan has such a unique and authentic culture and getting to experience it was amazing!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Internshipping in another country with such unique culture like Japan is the most life changing experience one can have
Pros
  • Looks great on CV
  • Makes great friendships
  • Gets fully immersion in another culture
What other participants should know
  • Housing may not be the best
  • Long Programs may not include as many experiences as short programs
  • I lost contact with the internship team for most of my stay

Hi Asha! Currently, Absolute Internships does not offer culinary internships. They do offer hospitality and tourism internships though, which may be a feasible alternative.
