Scotland was the best cultural and academic experience of my life!

I loved my time in Scotland! I got to spend every day watching unique surgeries, learning different veterinary techniques, and assisting with research. I received more hands-on experience during the Observation/Research assignment than I have in any veterinary clinic in the United States. I may even be listed as an author on a research study that is being submitted this fall. I also took a chance to travel around the UK and Ireland every weekend! There is no end to the fun stuff you can do in Edinburgh!

What would you improve about this program?
The staff at the veterinary school seemed confused at first as to who I was and why I was there. They often times just assumed I was a veterinary student there at the school. It would have been nice if a few people would have been given a "heads up" as to who I was and why I was there.

The summer of my life

This program was absolutely amazing. I have learned so much from working at The Royal (Dick) Veterinary School. I was able to see more surgeries than I ever thought I would working in a general practice in the States. I have built ties with the people I worked with and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work with these people for 6 weeks. Living in Scotland is unbelievable and I have never been more at home in a different country in my life. The only difficulty I encountered while being in Scotland was getting sick with strep throat. It was a little confusing on which Doctor or which hospital to go to. I found that NHS 24 is where you will go at the Royal Infirmary and they are open from 6pm-8am and you must call and make an appointment before hand.

What would you improve about this program?
I would have liked to get to know that I was to have a deposit on my apartment before I got there so that I would have been prepared with more money than what I thought I was okay with.

Response from Adelante Abroad

Great to hear that you had such an amazing experience in Scotland and we hope you look back on it with many wonderful memories.

We give you a lot of information prior to your program and it is mentioned in the Pre-Departure materials that a housing deposit may be required - we even make you sign off on it!!! We understand that in all the details you may have forgotten about that. For future candidates we can include a reminder nearer departure - thanks for the heads up!

Well worth the hard work and beatiful scenery

I worked 40 hours a week and saved my money to spend during the weekend when I travelled to cities such as: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aviemore, Blair Atholl, Skye, Fort William, etc. I had some difficulties with the public transportation at times; simply because I would get lost or I just wasn't use to the systems. Asking the locals is always useful and everyone is so sweet!

What would you improve about this program?
I would recommend the program for Edinburgh but not the program to Pitlochry. Pitlochry is beautiful but has no social sceen and the boss you will work with is incredibly difficult.

An Amazing Experience

The experience was amazing as far as gaining work experience and becoming part of a different culture. It is important to be willing to do things on your own and be interested in meeting others and making memories. Without this, in my experience, the trip would have been unpleasant as the people I lived with had no desire to become open-minded to a new culture and become part of it, or even get to know anyone including their roommates.

What would you improve about this program?
The program needs to be more careful about those they accept. As there are so many people who apply for these positions, it is important to make sure that those individuals are open-minded, friendly, and actually interested in experiencing the culture.

This trip Is worth it

The program is in a beautiful country, next to a beautiful city, and the people here are incredibly nice. Just be ready for 21 hours of sunlight per day and some pretty chilly weather (by my Arkansas standards). I would recommend doing and seeing all you can while you're here. hike some hills, go to a pub, try the local food, and in general make memories. you're only here once, and it was over for me before I knew it.

This was an incredible experience!

I really enjoyed all of the cultural visits. Castles and forts are my favorite places to explore and we had plenty of those during this trip. We were constantly busy either with field trips or working in the classroom. A typical day would include about one to two hours in the classroom; going out to a site to picnic in the grass or outside a castle; then exploring and learning about the site.
The work load was very reasonable and we were provided with all of the information we needed to complete it. Also, we were given feedback on our completed work and were given the opportunity to make revisions. This extra step was incredibly helpful for me because it allowed me to better understand certain concepts and truly understand the processes that take place during habitat management.
The only difficulty I encountered was when my foot started hurting the first week and remained in pain for about a week. So this made hiking up hills very difficult, but our instructor was very accommodating and was willing to walk at a slower pace.
Overall, this was a great experience and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in this field. It is a great way to learn about the policies and practices of another country.

What would you improve about this program?
I think being able to spend time with the other program and having more group social outings.

Review

This has been a wonderful experience. We have seen so many different ecosystems and historical sites. They had each day planned with something different and exciting. Everything went really well, I have no complaints! Generally, all of the people were very nice and accommodating. I have learned a lot about different ecosystems over the past four weeks. This course was beneficial as well as fun!

What would you improve about this program?
Having more activities planned with the equine group would have been fun.

This Program is awesome!

Our day to day life during the four weeks was different everyday. We would spend some mornings in the field or in the classroom; this was different almost every week. All of the field trips were very educational and a lot of fun. We learned about different types of habitats in Scotland and learned how to properly manage them. We meet with different site managers and got to learn how they got their job, what they do at their job, and what they hope to see in the future for their site. This has been the best four weeks out of any summer I have ever had, I wish I didn't have to go home yet! This program taught me a lot of new skills, and it was fun and exciting at the same time.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish they would have mixed the ecology and equine programs a little bit better. If there could have been a day or two during the beginning when we could have spent the day doing any activity like the zoo together it would have helped to get us to know everyone and not just the people in our program.
