Response from Intern Abroad HQ
Hi Amber,
Thanks for taking the time to share thoughts on your experience. I understand that we've previously discussed your concerns on the matter and I'm happy to clarify further.
We're sorry to hear that your placement didn't meet your expectations, as we do take a customized approach to ensure that all arrangements are made in consideration of each intern's profile, relevant experience, interests and study background.
You indicated that you spent the first week of your internship researching the club and its programs, which does make sense. You might have done some background research on this prior to beginning the internship, as all interns are provided information about their placement in advance, in order to prepare. Although you mentioned that you had no idea what your internship placement was in advance, you were emailed the complete profile of your internship placement several weeks before you began. This information which was sent to you outlined a description of the company, the name and contact information for your supervisor, and a list of the tasks/activities you could expect to be involved with.
It's natural to spend the first few days learning more about the operations, clients, current projects, and getting to know your colleagues better as well. This is essential, to ensure you develop a sound understanding of the company and audience, which becomes the foundation upon which you begin to create content and address other marketing/outreach priorities. For this reason, we outlined that there is an introductory period to be expected. The longer people intern for, the more integrated they become within the company, gaining more independence and ability to work across broader projects. We have successfully worked with this placement and hosted shorter-term interns for some time, as the opportunity provides insight into a professional football club that is currently accomplishing milestones in terms of marketing and international expansion.
We regret that you did not inform us, our local coordinator, or your internship supervisor of your concerns earlier, or come to us with any questions during your stay. We're always in a position to assist people during their internship and we encourage everyone to be as proactive as possible; to speak up if they are wanting to do more, or feeling like their current role is falling short of their ambitions and capabilities. All of the team is available to help but must be informed when assistance is needed so that they can give you appropriate support and guidance.
The internships are also designed to focus on strength identification, cultural intelligence, and universally transferable employability skills (i.e. cultural awareness, communication, problem solving etc). For this reason, we include the experiential learning curriculum you were additionally provided, and we invite you to complete this.
We are already in touch and you have my contact details available. If you have further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me or call.
Kind regards,
Dallas.
