Why choose GIVE Volunteers?

Since 2011, GIVE has led hundreds of all-inclusive, award-winning & life-changing group trips around the world, inspiring more than 8,000 teenagers and young adults to travel with purpose. Our 1-7 weeklong summer programs engage young travelers in meaningful opportunities to learn through doing, such as locally-led volunteer projects, authentic cultural experiences and eye-opening adventures in Thailand, Laos, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Tanzania, Hawai’i and Washington State.

Every step of the way, GIVE participants get to share the experience with an inclusive community of like-minded travelers who will become lifelong friends. Together, they get to learn, grow and empower local leaders to enact positive change in our host communities. All GIVE programs are intentionally designed to be environmentally conscious, socially responsible and economically empowering for the people and places we explore.
Simply put, a GIVE trip is not a vacation, it's a once in a lifetime adventure.

Impact 🌎

GIVE's mission is to inspire growth, empower global citizens, and ignite sustainable change worldwide. To truly inspire growth and achieve sustainable travel internationally, GIVE has adopted the Asset-based community development (ABCD) model, a set of proven best practices in sustainable development that mobilizes a community’s assets and resources as the basis for development. Furthermore, through providing hands-on and eye-opening learning experiences that foster authentic connections between participants and host community members, we can empower global citizens who will continue to spread GIVE’s values and ignite sustainable change worldwide.
Exploring the world with GIVE is all about responsible travel, but what does that really mean?
Mindful Tourism + Community Partnership = Economic Growth & Community Empowerment.

Part of what makes GIVE trips so special is being fully immersed in the cultures and communities we visit. However, we take extra steps to ensure we minimize our influence and always respect local cultures. We prepare all participants before travel and ensure they understand the culture and how to dress appropriately.

The most incredible experience ever

This GIVE experience changed my life and was completely unforgettable. Our guides, P’Chiarra, P’Dee, P’Pohn Pohn and P’Anne made this trip magical and so so special. It taught me the importance of ethical tourism and that we all have to do our part in educating ourselves on these issues that could hurt our beautiful world. It helped me realize that I could be part of a smaller ripple that could make a bigger wave. I plan to share my experience to inspire others by educating others about ecotourism and the mission that GIVE dedicates themselves too. I want others to be able to see experience everything me and my group did and see how beautiful our world can be when we step out of our comfort zones and take that leap. Thank you GIVE for the best trip of my entire life and for changing the perspective of my life. This company made me realize how I want to move forward with my own career and do my own part in this mission.

What was your funniest moment?
Elephant trekking was probably one of the hardest things I had to do and I had to push myself past my limits. The experience was so incredibly rewarding and by reminding myself that I can do it and that it’s only half a day of a mahouts life, I was able to push myself to be able to do it.

Amazing Trip in Thailand

This summer I had the chance to go on the Thailand experience with GIVE and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I learned many things about Thai culture, Karen culture, other people from different parts of the US, and myself. Between teaching children English in the village of Mueang Khong to doing permaculture at different locations to visiting the tribe villages of Ba Kao Lam and Pong Ngen, I was able to grow so much as an individual and see other people grow. I was able to get really close to my fellow volunteers, but also my amazing guides. Each of the local guides brought something special to the trip and taught me many new things. They were very open and willing to share their culture with us and learn about ours in turn. Everyone in my group bonded together and created a family; each and every one of them made a difference in my life and made me a slightly better person. Thanks to GIVE for having these opportunities to travel and visit local places to immerse ourselves in new cultures.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried many unfamiliar things, but a lizard that one of our guides shot down on the way to the village was probably the most exotic.
Pros
  • Great guides
  • Amazing, fun experiences
  • Beautiful accommodations

You need to take this trip

This trip is an amazing experience you definitely need to have. You learn new things every step of the way and the guides are so much fun and amazing people to meet and know. Your heart will be left with the kids in the villages, your knowledge of permaculture will be expanded, your view of the world will be opened and you won’t ever forget this trip and experience. It might be scary to go all the way across the world, especially if you do it by yourself but take the adventure learn something new about the world and yourself. Give trips are definitely the way to travel!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I did this all over again I would definitely change how much I really immersed my self in everything we did and I would definitely try harder to make better connections with all the people along the way.
Pros
  • Amazing people
  • Great food
  • So many new experiences to have
Cons
  • Bugs

Best experience of my life!

Traveling to Hawaii with GIVE was the best experience of my life. Going to a place like Hawaii and experiencing the culture in a way most people will never get to was such a blessing. The trip opened up my eyes and reminded me that the world is much bigger than my life I am so used to back home. A goal of mine is to force myself out of my comfort zone, and this trip definitely helped me do that. I was a bit nervous going into the trip, navigating an airport alone for the first time and spending so much time with strangers. But do not let those nerves hold you back at all!! Taking this step was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was able to meet the most incredible people that I now consider close friends. I learned so much about sustainability and how to steward the Earth, as well as so much about myself and my passions. This trip exceeded all my expectations and I could not recommend traveling with GIVE enough :)

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could do this trip again, I would get out of my head, let loose, and be 100% myself! It can be hard to do these things around unfamiliar people, but sometimes I just need to remind myself to stop overthinking and be myself.
Pros
  • You will meet the most incredible people.
  • Experiencing a new culture in the most valuable, meaningful way.
  • Connecting with nature and learning to steward the Earth.
Cons
  • You’ll never want to leave :(

A life-changing trip!

I loved the itinerary! It had a great balance of volunteer work, then fun activities everyday. It was also very organized everyday and in the middle of the trip we had one day where we didn’t do any volunteer work and that was a good break in the 9 days there. All the people I met on trip (including the guides) were all so fun and kind. There is also so much taught about the culture, society, land, and history of Hawai’i. It helps change your perspective on traveling in a better way. You will love this trip if you are an outdoorsy person, like adventure, and like making new friends! That’s how I knew this trip was for me!

What was your funniest moment?
There were many funny moments to be honest! Though two that are memorable are learning where Traven’s (the program guide) hiding spot was after playing hide n seek in the big plantation house. Along with playing Mafia in the dark at that house with everyone.
Pros
  • Met like-minded people.
  • Learned about responsible travel.
  • Had fun everyday.
Cons
  • The food was not the best everyday, but still good!
  • The bugs

Why did you choose this program?

I found GIVE Volunteers through my university and was so excited to see they had Thailand trips because my grandmother was from Thailand. I decided to choose Hill Tribes of Northern Thailand: Environmental Conservation, Education & Elephant Trekking for the diverse experience of Thai culture and meaningful efforts for conservation. In other words, I saw this trip as the best opportunity to give back to my heritage and to the country my grandmother loved so much.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

GIVE Volunteers was very helpful with assisting me in planning my trip! After I discovered GIVE at my university, I attended an in-person information session explaining the mission and purpose of the non-profit organization. The GIVE ambassadors taught me how to fundraise in order for me to pay for the trip, encouraging me to set up a GoFundMe that I then shared with friends and family. Once my payments were all set they helped me pick flights through my preferred airline and created a travel itinerary for me. Throughout the planning experience, their program coordinators are very responsive through both phone and email and are always incredibly helpful with any questions!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

This will be one of the most valuable and meaningful experiences of your life. Go into your trip with an open mind and a giving heart to truly soak it all in. And to truly immerse yourself in the experience, set the intention to unplug from social media. You can always update others after you return home!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Each daily agenda is different, but once you arrive at the main accommodation in Mueang Khong for 8 nights, most days will start with either Thai boxing or yoga (your choice), followed my breakfast, teaching English at the local school, lunch, working on the permaculture plot, free time to bond with other volunteers, discussion time, dinner, and a session of "good vibes" to celebrate the day. And throughout the week there is always fun field trips and cultural activities to mix it up!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

As someone who takes a while to trust new people, my biggest fear was connecting with the other volunteers I would be spending 14 days with. The night before the trip I had a moment to set my intentions—this can look like a prayer if you're religious, or simply a positive message to put out in the universe. I intended to go into the trip with an open heart, with the hopes of making new friends and having a fun time. What I didn't know then was that I was about to meet a group of the most amazing, kindhearted people. By the end of the trip, we all agreed we had never clicked with people this quickly or this deeply before. When people from around the world come to this beautiful place with this meaningful purpose of giving, you're bound to find a deep connection.

How did your experience extend beyond the trip dates?

Since I have returned home from Thailand, I have been able to permanently document experience through my photography and through my writing. After taking only a few photos in Thailand, I was able to come home to upload, and share my art with my family and friends. Two months after the trip ended, I finished writing a photo essay about my experience connecting with my heritage through giving back. I have now published the essay to my online portfolio and shared it with everyone who donated to the GoFundMe that helped fund my travel expenses. And since the last day of the trip, my volunteer group chat has continued with a series of updates, loving messages, and funny videos. We all intend to stay connected to each other and to GIVE, despite us all living in different parts of the world.

What is your favorite travel memory?

There was a time in my life when I wanted to see the world and thought I only had a short amount of time to see it all. I was more concerned about how many stamps I collected in my passport rather than the quality of the time I spent in each place. It was not until I had my first experience in SE Asia with GIVE that I realized I had been doing it all wrong.

We spent 2 weeks living and working within the region, Muang Khong. This experience lifted the superficial veil of travel and allowed me to become part of a community rather than a tourist passing through. We shared meals with the locals, learned from them, and became completely encompassed by the culture. By the end of this experience, we felt like we were part of the family.

I'll never forget trekking through the jungle following in the footsteps of a mahout named Eddy. We spent 2 hours tracking semi-wild elephants. As we passed through lush vegetation, Eddy was telling me about his family, his experiences growing up in the jungle and the special connection he shares with his elephant. Reminiscing on standing face to face with my favorite animal and I still remember my conversation with Eddy above it all. Memories are deeply encoded when you share an emotional connection with that place or the people within it. That is what GIVE provides when you travel, a connection to yourself, others, and this planet, unlike anything you have ever felt before.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Before joining GIVE, I had never truly made the connection that my actions could have an impact. I cared about social issues but lacked guidance and direction. GIVE mobilized that deeper desire within me to be a part of something that was bigger than myself.

I've learned that small choices lead to larger lifestyle changes and one of the best ways to make others more cognizant of their actions is to lead by example. I'm thankful to work for a company that builds up its employees and genuinely cares about the legacy they are leaving behind.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Many of our volunteers return home with an ignited sense of passion and eagerness to spread their knowledge to others. I am always so proud to see folks use social media as a platform for advocacy and environmental stewardship after going on a GIVE trip. The best stories always stem from eco-experience. Those that plant a seed of compassion in the country and nurture it through education and expanding perspective once they return home.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Of course I would recommend our Thailand and Laos program for anyone who is looking to experience the magic of SE Asia. Not only are these places beautiful to visit but GIVE also shines a light on the colorful cultures and people that call these places home. The programs are jam-packed full of adventure activities for those looking to push their comfort zones. I'm a thrill seeker myself so bungee jumping, zip-lining through the jungle, and chartering a bamboo raft down the mighty Mae Tang river are right up my alley.

If a month in SE Asia is not enough, which of course it's not... We also now offer a separate elephant immersion program that includes 8 days of observing, caring for, and most importantly serving as advocates for a rapidly declining keystone species. Talk about a fricken epic travel memory...

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

GIVE practices a specific form of development that is centered around evaluating the strengths and assets within a community rather than focusing on what they are lacking or in "need" of. We do not compromise our values and treat these communities with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Our projects are built upon the ideas of great leaders within these communities and GIVE is the catalyst to make these dreams become reality. I am proud to be part of a team that views sustainable development as a way to invest in people. By practicing responsible tourism, we are not only voting with our dollar to support local initiatives but also gaining perspective and preserving the sacred entity of culture within.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe the biggest factor for success in our company is to constantly analyze our impact and "walk the walk". How can we meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs? It's all about finding a better way to do things and that is the ripple we hope to spread throughout the world.
