A wonderful experience!

From the moment I stepped off the airplane to the moment I boarded, I felt the support of the IES staff. It was a peculiar time when I was abroad; Spain had just begun to experience a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases before we were asked to repatriate. Nevertheless, the short time that I was in Madrid was a special and memorable one. I was placed with a warm and caring host-family that taught me a lot about the Spanish culture and with whom I built a relationship. Classes were from Monday to Thursday, so I always felt as if I had enough time to explore the city and its surroundings. To mention: my art history class took place in The Prado Museum; instead of spending the class hours inside a classroom we learned about art in the museum. I saw paintings from El Greco to Goya to Picasso. Additionally, IES often organized activities and excursions to expose students to more aspects of the Spanish culture. For example, IES organized a weekend trip to Extremadura; a place where we were able to learn about history, food, and the regional culture. All in all, it was a culture enriching experience—even if it was for a short amount of time.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Keep an open mind! Try new food, visit new places, and talk to people! Do not expect things to be done as they are in the US; you will have a lot of adapting to do. However, everything will result in a more enriching experience.

abroad changed my outlook on life

It definitely sounds cliche, but my time abroad changed me as a person. Ever since I was younger I knew I wanted to go abroad but my desire to go to Spain came about in my senior year of high school. I wanted to immerse myself in the culture and live in a large city, so I chose Barcelona. Having the opportunity to live in Barcelona was incredible. I adjusted quickly to taking the metro everywhere, finding new places to explore everyday. There is always something happening in the city so there is no time to be bored. I loved how I could escape the bustling city by going to a park or even the beach. I love being outdoors so having the beach right there was a big plus for me! Barcelona is also very central which made it extremely easy to travel to other places via train or plane. I learned so much abroad about people, life, culture, and relationships. I also was inspired by a new career path while I was abroad and am now pursuing that which I am very excited about!! If the chance to go abroad comes my way again I don’t think I will think twice about it. I cannot say enough about my experience abroad, it was truly life changing.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Knowing that I wanted to travel around Europe while living in Barcelona, I wish I would have made a more definitive list of where I wanted to go before arriving in Barcelona. Figuring out where to go and researching the details took a good deal of time, so I wish I had prepared prior.

An Experience to Cherish Forever

South Africa and Cape Town as a whole is a unique experience just by nature of the location itself. In a country with a culture so unlike any other, this program provides the opportunity to learn and experience so much more than you might on a more conventional or popular program. The rich political, cultural, and economic history alone creates an abundance of opportunity to learn, not to mention the rich political, cultural, and economic current that you can interact with and enjoy throughout courses, activities, involvement in clubs/societies, program excursions, and more. I cannot recommend this program enough!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I got to hold the trunk of an elephant and see the southernmost tip of the continent of Africa-- how many people can say they've done that?!?

One of a life time experience!

Milan is a beautiful city and I am so glad I chose to study abroad there! I can't say enough positive things about my experience in Milan and my experience with IES. The program was so proactive about making sure students were ready to embark on this journey and followed through with their support once we arrived. Another one of the huge reasons I chose to study abroad with IES in Milan was because of the opportunity to complete an internship. I knew this was something I wanted to do and would give me a unique experience to put on my resume. The IES internship coordinator was extremely helpful in finding a placement for me that matched up with my career goals and desires. I ended up completing a marketing internship for the British School of Milan. Everyone was so welcoming and always made sure I was comfortable with the work I was assigned, not to mention answered any of my questions. Lastly, I had a great housing experience with IES. I chose the apartment option and had 6 roommates. Our apartment was spacious and in a great location, about a 15 -20 min walk from Duomo! I lived in Brera and that neighborhood and they are known for having superb restaurants! I never had a bad meal while I was over there!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking experience was definitely when I was first landed in Italy and had to navigate through the airport to find IES. There are IES representatives at the airport but I did not travel with anyone I knew so being completely by myself in a foreign country was a little nerve-racking. Try and make friends while your waiting for your flight! Chances are, there are other students who are traveling from the same as airport as you! IF you can find a buddy to look for once you get off the plane it will definitely ease your nerves for sure!

Short but Sweet

My experience in Madrid was amazing. I got to meet a lot of people, learn all about a foreign culture, and travel to new places. One of my favorite parts of being abroad was being able to travel easily. Madrid was incredible, but smaller places outside of the city were breathtaking. The longest excursion we took as a program was to Córdoba. It was such a beautiful trip I'll never forget! It was also easy to travel outside of Spain; Berlin was my favorite.

Another thing about Madrid in particular is that their public transportation systems are very clean and easy to use. I live in a fairly rural area, and do not have much experience with using a Metro or taking a city bus. However, it was very simple once I figured it out!

Unfortunately, my experience was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. It was heartbreaking, which speaks to the unforgettable adventure I was having. I am very grateful for my abroad experience and for the IES staff that helped along the way. Everything was well organized and, even when disaster struck, I felt safe with my program. I hope to revisit the beautiful country of Spain in the future.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment for me was immediately after I got to my apartment the first day. The exhaustion from travel and the emotional toll of leaving my comfort zone finally caught up to me. I was not expecting to feel so overwhelmed because I was never on the fence about studying abroad; it was something I always knew I wanted in a college experience. Funnily enough, I overcame this deep homesickness by going to the supermarket! It was something so normal and manageable. It took away from everything else that seemed so abnormal and unmanageable!

Seriously Life Changing

My time in Paris can be described as nothing short than life changing. I am a studio art major and a french minor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and I knew that I wanted a program that encapsulated all of my interests in one, so when I came across IES's Paris studio art program, I knew I had found the perfect match. To say I was nervous to begin is an understatement. I was worried about the language immersion, making friends, if I would get along with my host mom, etc... however, after a week in my new home, my worries began to settle. I took painting and drawing classes in the most quaint Parisian studio with mainly native Parisians, my host mom was one of the coolest people I've ever met (the picture is the view from my bedroom window), and I made so many friends with whom I still keep in touch. On top of all of that, my French improved by leaps and bounds. I was no where near fluency, and I was barely proficient at the very beginning of the program, and even though my program was in half because of the global pandemic, I can now say that I feel beyond comfortable carrying out an intense conversation in French (of course I still mess up, but I have vastly improved.) The cultural trips were structured and a lot of fun, and we saw some truly amazing places that I never would have been able to go it had it not been because of IES, including a few wine and champagne tastings. I definitely recommend this program to anyone and everyone. Something that I would recommend you to do is to do some research beforehand to learn about non-touristy things that are going on while you're in Paris. Also, start saving your money NOW. Seriously. There are so many things to do, and a lot of them do cost money (but some of my favorite things to do didn't, like wandering the streets and going to 59 Rivoli.) Another tid-bit is that Paris (maybe all of France, but I don't know) has seriously low price concerts, even for mega-famous musicians, there's some law prohibiting overpricing the tickets. And! On your IES student id if it says "histoire de l'art" aka "art history" you can get into most museums (including the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay) for free!

What was your funniest moment?
I threw up in front of the Louvre. I had some food poisoning from a sketchy restaurant from the night before and I was walking around the next morning, and I just threw up. Really an iconic moment.

The City of Gold

Salamanca, Spain is a town like no other. Known as the City of Gold, it is truly a treasure. The academic opportunities, rich culture, and history are unparalleled. It is the perfect place for anyone hoping to further their Spanish skills, with its endless opportunities for total immersion. The classes are challenging in just the right way, with professors that are there to help you achieve your goals. The town has so much beauty and history to offer, making it a well-rounded educational experience, as well as the perfect place for personal growth.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Despite being sent home early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I would not change a single thing. I think this is an important question that really speaks to the quality of this program-- no matter how things turned out, I would not trade a single day. Salamanca will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Salamanca, a Home in Spain

I can't imagine a better place to learn and grow than the beautiful city of Salamanca, Spain. It's the perfect size for a community feel with the autonomy to go on many an adventure in the city. My host family was incredible and very sweet - I felt right at home in their house and enjoyed the opportunity to practice Spanish in and out of the classroom. The courses at IES were rigorous and I feel thankful for a tiered-level program that allowed me to work with students of similar ability. I also enjoyed the variety of classes offered. Attending courses at the partner institution, USAL, was incredibly helpful in gaining credit for my home university and advancing my spoken and written Spanish communication. I loved my time in Spain and I can't imagine a better place to have been!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Get out and see the world as much as possible when you are there! There are so many incredible day/weekend trips that you can take throughout Spain and Europe. Pack lighter than you need to - there's great shopping in Salamanca!

IES Abroad in Freiburg!

I was in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany for three awesome weeks before I was sent home due to COVID-19. When I arrived I was greeted by a local German student who lived in my building. I had some time in my room to rest and unpack before meeting the group of IES students and student guides for dinner at a local restaurant. We got to know each other and made plans to find grocery stores, cook dinner, and explore the city together. I was nervous about making friends, but once I was there it was pretty obvious that everyone wanted to hang out with everyone, since we were all in the same boat. This sense of group support and connection continued throughout my time there, and we kept the group chat going even when the program went remote. I also became friends with one of my flatmates!

Our classes didn't start until we had already gone home, so unfortunately we never met our professors in person. Online classes were difficult because all online classes are, but the professors were really wonderful about trying to make the experience less stressful. The IES Abroad staff gave us mixed signals about COVID-19, which is understandable given the unprecedented nature of the crisis, but it was incredibly frustrating and stressful for the students. Our on-site staff told us IES would never send us home, but that was not based on any real policy, so when the Chicago office sent us home we had no warning at all. However, staff changes were made after the fact and they let us know by email.

All in all, I had a great experience and I still miss my time in person with IES. If COVID-19 hadn't happened, it would have been perfect! I absolutely recommend going abroad with IES!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The scariest moment was when we all found out we had to go home. It felt like there was a mad rush out of the country, and we all thought we were taking the virus home to our families. It was devastating to leave my friends and the city I had just fallen in love with. I spent the last few days with my friends, taking in as much of the city as we possibly could. The biggest source of support through the experience was the group chat with everyone in the program.

Best French study abroad program!

If you're looking for a French immersion program, look no further than IES Nantes. Aside from the program itself, the city of Nantes is perfect for college students who want to practice their French. It is decent-sized city with tons of restaurants, bars, cool events, and things to do, but it's also not overwhelming and is very easy to navigate. It also has a solid airport that makes it easy and relatively cheap to travel throughout France and Europe. It's also not very touristy, so there are plenty of opportunities to speak French with locals. I found that locals were very willing to practice with me and my friends, and we were also able to make friends with French and international students. The program is AMAZING. All of the staff at IES work so hard to make this an amazing experience for us. They are some of the nicest people I've ever met and will help you with every problem (even problems as crazy as the impending coronavirus!!). The social activities and travel opportunities provided by the program are so varied--we went to the Loire Valley castles, Normandy, and Mont Saint Michel/ Saint Malo in the two months that I was there. I appreciated that we could take classes both at IES and the local university. The IES classes were so interesting--take gastronomy if you want to try amazing new food and drink each week! The staff help you take pretty much any class you'd want at the university, and I even knew people who took STEM classes there. At the university, I highly recommend the translation class. The professor knows IES well and loves working with IES students, and it's a great way to learn some new vocabulary. IES also recognizes that you are not just here for your studies, so the workload isn't overwhelming. If you work steadily, you'll have plenty of time to take advantage of the city and Europe! IES's homestay program also makes this program so strong. My host family was so welcoming and wonderful, and most of the homestays are located within easy access to everything--I was about a 20-minute walk away and lived right next to the main cathedral. You'll leave with a second family.

These were some of the best two months of my life. I wish they weren't cut short by the coronavirus, and I wish I could go back, but I learned so much during my time in France. And I definitely came back more confident in my French. Don't be intimidated about the immersive side of this program--you are required to speak French when at IES and during IES activities, but you'll be glad for it. There were people of all levels in my program, and everyone improved significantly over the semester. Come to Nantes!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Bring a warm jacket and sturdy umbrella! Nantes is much colder and rainier than I expected.
