Great local team

I recently had the opportunity to participate in the International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) volunteer program, spending a week in one of their placements. Overall, it was an eye-opening experience, and I’m glad I took part in it. While there were a few aspects that left me with some questions, the positive aspects of the experience, especially the local team, stood out to me and made the trip memorable.

First, let me start with the things that really impressed me. The local team was absolutely fantastic. They were welcoming, supportive, and deeply passionate about the work they were doing. It was clear that they were committed to making a difference in the community, and their enthusiasm was contagious. Whether we were working at the school or engaging with the local people, the staff were always there to guide and ensure that we were having the most meaningful experience possible. I truly felt that I was contributing to something bigger than myself, and I could see how much the locals appreciated the help.

Additionally, I learned a great deal during my time with IVHQ. From the daily interactions with the local staff to the skills I developed working at the school, it was a valuable educational experience. I was able to learn about the local culture, the challenges the community faces, and the different ways that volunteers can make a meaningful impact. The program also gave me a unique perspective on development work and the role that foreign volunteers can play in assisting, rather than overshadowing, local initiatives.

However, as much as I enjoyed the experience, there were a few concerns that stayed with me after I left. The most prominent was the cost. While I understand that volunteer programs often require funding to operate, I couldn’t help but wonder if the money I was paying was going directly towards the school or the local community I was working with. It seemed like a considerable amount of money for just one week, and I wasn’t entirely clear on how the funds were being allocated. I would have liked more transparency about how my contribution was being used, especially since the program was marketed as a way to support local projects.

In fairness, IVHQ does provide a lot of logistics, such as accommodation, meals, and support throughout the program, which made it easier for me as a volunteer to focus on the work itself. The local staff were also top-notch, making sure everything ran smoothly and making us feel welcome from day one. But, given the cost, I would have appreciated more direct reassurance that the funds were going to support the community we were there to help.

Despite the financial concerns, I would still say that my time with IVHQ was a rewarding experience. The opportunity to volunteer in a different country, meet new people, and contribute to a meaningful cause was incredibly valuable. The program allowed me to gain a new perspective on both volunteerism and international development, and it definitely inspired me to think more critically about the ways we support and empower local communities.

In conclusion, while IVHQ’s volunteer program offers an excellent learning experience, it's worth considering the costs and the transparency regarding where your money goes. The local team was amazing, and the experience itself was enriching, but a little more clarity around financial aspects would help make this program even better.

What would you improve about this program?
Maybe more of the money you spend on the program going towards the local team and the community.

IVHQ Christmas Program in Guatemala

I volunteered with IVHQ for their Christmas program in Antigua, Guatemala. This was my first experience with IVHQ and I will definitely volunteer with them again. I stayed with a local family who were kind, thoughtful and made me feel right at home. The accommodations were modest but clean and comfortable. The Christmas program was a great experience because we had the opportunity to do a variety of activities including working with seniors and children, picking coffee beans, and a cultural immersion. I appreciate that IVHQ partners with local organizations on the ground.

IVHQ does a great job from start to finish - 5 Stars

IVHQ did a great job from start to finish. Their pre-trip guide provided information specific to the location, contacts, travel/visa/immunizations and accommodations.

Arrival was very smooth and coordinated, with the local staff being very welcoming and patient during the check-in and indoctrination. Support during the stay was provided by local representatives for each of the volunteer activities. Meals, amenities and recommendations for off-time activities were perfect, providing positive local experiences. Each of my volunteer assignments with IVHQ over the past several years have made this at a minimum, a definite annual event. Every location to date has provided nothing but positive and rewarding experiences!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have added at least another week or two to my time in-country. The support from the local staff and the engagement with the individuals we were supporting was very rewarding and fulfilling. Even with the language differences, the ability to build a connection with many of those I came into contact with was heartfelt.
Pros
  • Clear instuctions and guidance provided from start to finish by IVHQ
  • Local staff, both at the college and at the work assignments, were very personable, knowledgeable and supportive throughout the entire stay.
  • Accommodations, meals and recommendations for activities were spot on.
Cons
  • Cannot think of anything I was wanting for or lacking throughout the entire experience.

IVHQ - PERU

It was an eye opening experience for me. Discovering that basic health care, screening or even basic health workshops is a luxury it was utterly shocking. But I learned about the health disparities the population faces. Types of health care facilities government provide and had a chance to visit health and prevent centre. I would recommend anyone to want to start their journey in health care or medical care. It also deepened my culture humility. One of the best experience I had in 2025. I also had chance to provide infographic that I had for the population such as what is balance diet, how to wash hands, how to brush teeth, wonderful opportunity to grow professional and personally as well. Apart from professional experience I met amazing people over the span of 2 weeks, great people form different part of the world. We at least had one meal together, before going to bed watch Netflix most of the days and go for walk. It was one of the best time I had.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Nothing honestly, i loved ever part of my experience. It helped me to grow as a better human being.

Volunteer trip in Tanzanie

The experience was great. We stayed in very clean houses, and food was included. There was even hot water and a caretaker! For the volunteer programs, I was able to do childcare, which was fantastic. The veterinary internship was a little less enjoyable because I think the veterinary didn’t really need help. I made friends from all over the world. It was a great social experience! And we can do activities during the week-end. For example, I did a safari and a masaai village immersion in Tanzania.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would not choose the veterinary program
Pros
  • Help children
  • Social trip
  • Safety
Cons
  • The veterinary didn’t really need help
  • The food is the same every week
  • Lockdown in Tanzania because of the elections

Amazing Kenya

The details and background on accommodation etc was spot on. I have been kept safe and fed and the excursions were the icing on the cake. Three weeks was perfect time for me.

I enjoyed being a part of the school and giving then a fresh look by painting the 9 classrooms ready for the kids return in 2026. The kids and teachers were just so welcoming and we were involved as soon as we arrived. Teaching new songs and playing games was so much fun. Very humbling. It allowed me to really understand the difference in our countries. I felt so grateful for this experience

What was your funniest moment?
Most fun was playing games with kids and safaris

IVHQ - Overseas Volunteer Immersion Experience

The depth and sincerity of my experience—and the significant impact it had on my spiritual growth—were shaped by the warm hospitality I received, clear and open communication, and the genuine dedication from everyone to make the process smooth and enjoyable. Thanks to this thoughtful approach, I felt truly valued, respected, and confident at every stage. What made my journey especially rich and authentic was this combination of welcoming kindness, clarity, and effort, which fostered a sense of appreciation and assurance throughout.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I were to embark on this journey again, the one change I would make is to extend my stay to four weeks instead of just two. While the welcoming atmosphere and the smooth, thoughtful process instantly put me at ease, I came to realize that a longer period would allow for a more profound connection with the local customs, stories, and relationships.
Pros
  • Warm Hospitality
  • Clear Communication
  • Personal and Spiritual Growth
Cons
  • Limited Duration
  • Potential for Surface-Level Engagement - More time can help develop deeper bonds
  • Adjustment Period - Go few days early to adjust

Life-changing experience

From the beginning, my volunteer trip to Fiji with IVHQ was amazing. I participated in the teaching program, where I was assigned to a class at a local school - in my case, year 5 - and gave them new learning experiences. I mainly taught English, geography, and art classes, and it was such a fun challenge to find creative ways to give the children engaging lessons. It challenged me in new ways, but I loved seeing the energy from the students when they were finally being given creative outlets with my lessons. I also loved being completely immersed in the Fijian culture, all the way down to becoming friends with some locals. If anyone was on the fence about participating in an IVHQ program, as long as you go in with no expectations, the experience will change your life.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come in with NO expectations. I met a few people who came in with expectations (even though IVHQ specifically says to come in with none) and they weren’t as pleased as the rest of us who truly came in to embrace the moment.
Pros
  • Culture immersion
  • Community relationships
  • New adventures
Cons
  • Thin mattresses
  • Not always enough food if there were sometimes more volunteers than other weeks
  • Bus system not always cash-friendly, but bus cards not always given for shorter stays - made for awkward scenarios to catch the bus

First time traveling out the country!

This was my first time traveling out of the country and my first time traveling by myself. Throughout the whole experience I knew what to expect, knew how to prepare for my trip to Tanzania and was connected to wonderful people who made the experience stress free. Everyone was able to answer questions I had like when to book my flight, what documents I needed for my travel, who I should contact if I needed anything, and overall everyone was happy to help! When I arrived to my destination, everything exceeded my expectations! Everyone was so welcoming and everything was organized perfectly. We were able to get to know everyone who we were staying with, we got to walk around different markets and places and the best part of my trip was going to the daycare I was volunteering at. I had the best time spending the day with all the kids, playing, learning to read and write, and I also enjoyed spending time with the daycares director. She was very sweet and help, shared her story and we truly got to bond. Overall, the whole process starting with the application, traveling there and arriving there was a smooth process and all the information I needed was given to me!

What was your funniest moment?
Spending time with the kids at the daycare I volunteered at and getting to experience a new environment, a new language, culture, etc!
Pros
  • Your able to help a community!
  • Your able to meet new people and make new friends
  • You’re able to learn more about a new country and learn a new language and culture!

Best experience in Fiji

My volunteer trip to Fiji had a really positive impact on me, especially through the childcare and sports programs I worked in. Spending time with the kids, helping with daily activities, and supporting their learning showed me how meaningful even small acts of care can be. Coaching and playing sports with them also helped build confidence, teamwork, and genuine connections. The experience opened my eyes to the importance of community, patience, and giving back, and it’s something that will stay with me for a long time

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I definitely recommend staying for two weeks, especially if you’re adding the intro week. The intro week gives you time to adjust, learn about the culture, explore the area, and get comfortable before starting your actual volunteer placement. By the second week, you feel more confident, more settled, and able to make a bigger impact. It also gives you time to build real connections with other volunteers and the community. Overall, doing the intro week followed by your volunteer week makes the whole experience smoother, more meaningful, and way more enjoyable.
