Didn’t want to leave!

Everyone was very kind and helpful! Lots of great suggestions and advice from all! This was my first time away from home since COVID got in the way of moving out for college. I didn’t get homesick the way I thought I would and it was all thanks to the community and support I had. There is lots to do and 8 weeks went by very quickly! There are so many things to see and do in Korea and great food and people. I can’t wait to go back for a visit and see all of the friends I have made. This was a great opportunity I am glad it went so well!

Pros
  • Great support
  • Friendly environment

Internship in Seoul

The price tag is scary, but the experience was definitely worth it. Overall, it's been a really great experience and I enjoy the company I'm interning at. BA has events twice a week, which helps you get to know the city, have meaningful experiences and grow professionally, and keeps you in contact with the other interns, which I find really beneficial. I will say, there was some radio silence between when I got my internship placement and the weeks before departure which made me a bit anxious, but everything worked out. My parents were worried about this being a scam as well since they hadn't heard of BA at all, but the Seoul coordinator Alize and the global coordinator Anne Marie set up a zoom call with them to answer any questions that they had (thank you both so much for that again). The one downside I've had was with housing, as I had some issues that BA couldn't do anything about (the housing put me in a temporary room the first night because my actual room wasn't ready, and then tried to move me again for a maintenance issue they decided they could fix after I move out all within the first 4 days I was there) that was really stressful and the location of the housing from work is pretty far (about a 50 minute subway ride). But overall, really great experience and I feel like I've grown a lot as a professional in my preferred field!

Pros
  • Professional growth
  • Events keep you connected with other interns and help you get to know the city
  • BA coordinators make you feel supported
Cons
  • Housing issues left me very stressed and the location is pretty far

Work from home

My experience was unique because they fit the programme around me, so when I could start, the hours I could work and where I could work from. They were also very helpful on getting me ready for the interviews and have checked up on me continuously throughout the programme and making sure I am getting the experience I need. They are also very helpful on helping to try and find a job after I will have completed my internship. They have done this with career coaching which is extremely helpful with tips and how to find jobs and what I should do when I have found them.

Tokyo Program

Amazing experience all around, great supporting program staff who are always available for any help. Tokyo is a great city to intern in as not only is it super safe it is also a great place to learn professional skills and mannerisms.
For me it’s always been a goal to visit Tokyo and the experience I received allowed to me experience it in the most fulfilling way. There is never a shortage of things to do and of course the food is second to none. Overall an excellent internship program for anyone looking to intern in Japan.

Pros
  • Safety
  • Great Transport
  • Plenty of activities
Cons
  • Some communication problems

3 Months in Tokyo

I had a wonderful three month internship in Tokyo facilitated by the amazing folks at Beyond Academy. The Beyond Academy team helped pair me up with a company, found me a place to stay, and planned tons of social events coordinated by the amazing Imran and Anabelle. Spending a few months in Japan was a great way to experience a different work culture, and Beyond Academy truly went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and to make my time in Tokyo fun and rewarding. I highly recommend this program to anyone with even a passing interest in Japan and Japanese culture.

Pros
  • Great social events
  • Experience a different work environment
  • Immensely helpful and kind coordinators

Internship with Beyond Academy in Seoul

I have had an absolute blast here in Seoul. The community leaders are so helpful and kind. They are always are so supportive and will help you out when you need. I have got lost here numerous times, being new to Seoul it can be a little confusing. But every time they offered to show me around etc. I have done two internships whilst being here. The first one was more fashion orientated and my most recent is product photography. I am a stylistic portrait photographer but I am now starting to learn new skills in product, which will be very helpful for my future as its good to try different styles.

Pros
  • The Community leaders are lovely and will help you whenever you need
  • It is easy to make friends with the other interns in your programme as there are a lot of events always planned for you to attend
  • I have learnt some new skills at my internship
Cons
  • It would be better if the programme had tried to contact more companies in the field I wanted to originally work in; portrait photography. Just to give me a few more options.
  • I would like there to be some guidance on what kind of visas and general things to know after leaving the programme. If an intern wanted to stay longer after the programme or try and get a job in that country.

My Internship Experience in NYC

I had a fantastic time in NYC. The Beyond Academy staff were very attentive and are always free to help with anything and everything. The people of New York are very friendly and helpful too, and I've eaten some of the best pizza and sandwiches I've ever had.
Some of my favourite events included the trip to the Statue of Liberty, and walking the Brooklyn Bridge, but I also enjoyed the less touristy trips where we went off the beaten path to comedy shows and local food favourites.

I'm sad to go home, but I'll always feel like I'm home again should I ever be fortunate enough to return.

Pros
  • Attentive Community Coordinators
  • A range of activities
  • Good networking and work opportunities
Cons
  • My program felt too short - wish I'd stayed longer

Seoul Program- Above and beyond

I was concerned about moving so far away from my family and friends all by myself, but everyone here has been so kind and accommodating that I don't want to go back. I've felt so welcomed since I arrived, and I've gained a lot of valuable work experience that will undoubtedly help me in the future. It has been a wonderful adventure, and it has been a great deal of fun to uncover the city of Seoul's many hidden treasures. And the food is out of this world!

Will miss everyone here, and I look forward to coming back at some point in the near or distant future!

Pros
  • friendly people
  • fun experiences
Cons
  • not many English speakers

A second home on the other side of the world

Coming to Seoul I had many prejudices in my head. But as soon as I arrived, my picture from Seoul totally changed. In the two months I was able to live in this interesting, beautifull city, I got to meet the most helpfull, kind and respectfull people. Ten million inhabitants sound like a lot, but due to an impressive infrastructure it doesn't feel like that. As an urban Geographer, I was fascinated by the many contrasts the city presents. Old temples and left overs of the city wall next to skyscrapers, modern XXL supermarkets next to local street markets. There is internet available for free everywere but if you should still get lost, the locals will help you as well to find the right way. It is a very interesting culture to experiance and totally different from everything I was used to.

Pros
  • welcoming people
  • good food
  • city is easy to adapt to
Cons
  • few people speek english
  • in the beginning its hard to find vegetarian food

Seoul- Beyond Academy

Coming to Seoul through this program was one of the best things I’ve done! It’s created so many new opportunities for me that I’ve never even considered. The program also provided so much support so even for those who aren’t comfortable going out on their own you still get so many chances to do anything and everything. I’ve made so many new friends through this experience and it has completely transformed the way I travel. Even with being in Seoul for such a short time it’s already been so great that many of the people through the program including myself are highly considering staying here.
