Great experience

I have done both a study aborad program and this internship program and I genuinely enjoy the internship so much more.

But if you aren't ready to work in the real world or aren't willing to put in the effort to learn about it, just do a study abroad program.

You aren't gonna get exactly what you want out of the program 100%. There are some lucky interns who do, and I unfortunately was not one of them.

Not to say I hated my internship but it was more of a sales role than an HR role, which is what I had been looking for. But I was only going to be a part of the program for 2 months, and I decided that I would just use it as a growing experience.

The coordinators were great, though, and they were willing to hear me out and encouraged me to try things out and talk things out with them.

I honestly loved the coordinators so much. It was like having cool camp counselors while everyone else at the camp was weird and gross and annoying.

The share house provided by Beyond was kinda godawful though. It was nice that it was cleaned weekly but no one else in the share house would keep it clean so I rarely ever used the common spaces. Not to mention the shower rooms. For some god forsaken reason, people had a hard time changing the hairnet there. And I tore my ACL in my last week there, and I was still able to do it. Fucking bullshit.

Had to talk to the property management on several occasions, and they weren't great. On April 1st (wish it was an April Fool's joke), my shoe cabinet broke. It took them 7 days to fix it.

Property management was awful. Coordinators cool. The internship was a good growing experience. All in all, it was a great program.

Also since I crippled myself at the end I would not recommend the share house if you have mobility issues because it is not accessibility friendly at all.

What was your funniest moment?
Tore my ACL on my 2nd to last friday. :D
Pros
  • Growing experience
  • Go to mee a lot of people
  • Interesting events
Cons
  • Other interns
  • Walking so much walking
  • Share house

Great time

My Japan internship was damn solid, way better than I expected. Olivia, Stephanie, and Sydney were top-tier coordinators—sharp, reliable, and always making sure I was good to go. The community was real, full of solid people who made every day worth showing up for. I got everything I came for and then some, with moments that’ll stick with me for years. Whether it was the work or just kicking it with the crew, it was time well spent. No regrets at all. I’d tell anyone to jump on this opportunity—it’s the real deal and worth every second.

What was your funniest moment?
Funniest moment was missing the last train and having a random Japanese man fall asleep on my shoulder
Pros
  • Food
  • Hikes
  • Souvenirs
Cons
  • Sharehouse

Had an amazing time with Beyond Academy

My name is Dani, and I stayed 2 months in Tokyo with Beyond Academy. I loved my time there so much; I just left and am already missing it! The coordinators are super sweet and organize weekly events with the cohort (other people with you on the trip). I got super close with the ppl who stayed in the same house as me. I liked my Internship, but I noticed that some of my friends' other companies were a bit of a mismatch. I highly recommend this program for growth, work, new culture, and community.

What was your funniest moment?
All the culture shocks and getting lost in the Shinjuku and Shibuya subway trains!
Pros
  • Meet amazing people
  • Explore the city, learn about a new culture
  • build your resume and skillset
Cons
  • Housing could have been better
  • Lots of internships weren't the best work environment
  • Can be expensive (what comes with living in metropolitan city)

10/10 - Exactly what I was looking for

I did a 6-month internship in Tokyo with Beyond Academy and had a great experience overall. The internship lined up well with what I was aiming for, both personally and professionally.

Tokyo is just an incredible city to live in. There’s always something happening, the food is unreal, and every neighborhood has its own vibe. I visited twice before this program, but living and working here is completely different (in a good way ofc).

The coordinators, Olivia and Stephanie, were amazing. They’re super fun, easy to talk to, and always ready to help with anything - from hospital visits to food recommendations. They made the whole experience super smooth and enjoyable.

The accommodation was clean, safe, and in a great location. Living with other interns was fun and made it easier to settle in. I can say I definitely made some lifelong friends through the program.

I was skeptical at first about the events, but they were actually great - well-planned, varied, and a fun way to explore Tokyo and meet people without it feeling forced.

As a bonus, I actually ended up landing a full-time job in Japan after the internship, which would've never happened if it wasn't for the program lol.

Overall, I’d absolutely recommend the program to anyone serious about gaining international work experience and exploring Tokyo/Japan.

Tokyo internship experience review

It’s hard to put the whole 6 months of my time in Japan in a short review but here goes!

I have gained so much from my time here and through the internship I ended up doing! I’m a photographer and landed an internship that basically had me capturing marketing visuals for their companies. My boss was so helpful and taught me so much and I was lucky enough to really gain vital experiences in my field! I was lucky as not every intern had a perfect fit, but I’m super grateful I did!

The social and cultural side of the experience was as great if not better! The interns were an integral part of my time here, and I made great new friends! The coordinators were there for every problem or question that arose and always knew where to point, even if there was no answer available at the exact moment. All in all, I would definitely recommend stepping outside your comfort zone and giving it a try!

Also, regarding the internship, it really does depend on YOU whether you enjoy or get the most out of it! The more you ask and push your company to give you more things, the more you will get. It’s not just enough to sit there and think that once you get to Japan, the rest will come to you.

Do it!

I just concluded a 6 month program, and I can solidly say it was one of the best decisions I've made. Sure, the cost is not cheap but it's still a better deal than other similar programs, and after meeting other interns from other companies that offer internships in Japan, I can say with confidence I'm very glad I went with Beyond. The support was amazing, and I loved the coordinators, especially Stephanie and Olivia, who were there the entire duration of my program. I will be honest, what you get out of this is what you make of it, so as long as you're dedicated and set on having a once in a lifetime experience, you're going to be glad you chose this!

What was your funniest moment?
We had a barbecue, and my Bulgarian friend kept talking about how Bulgaria secretly controls both Russia and USA
Pros
  • Location
  • Sightseeing
  • Food
Cons
  • Tokyo summers are hot

So much fun

This program was super fun and well organized. The community coordinators were very kind and welcoming to the interns and were always there to provide us with advice and lend us a listening ear if we ever needed one. The coordinators were very open to suggestions in terms of community events which was great, they made sure everyone would be included and always felt safe (shout out to Olivia and Stephanie <3)

The Beyond team was very efficient at securing an interview for a potential host company and provided me with many resources in order to prepare me for the interview. This was my first ever “big” interview and with their advice, I was able to secure a position at the first company found!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would definitely like to stay for longer as I had so much fun and 8 weeks was not long enough. It went by so fast
Pros
  • Great community
  • Easy communication
Cons
  • Accomodation wasnt as expected

Beyond Academy Tokyo Internship

I am glad I chose Beyond Academy for my internship in Tokyo, the staff were very helpful with any questions that I had leading up to the experience, and the community events during the program were both educational and fun. Through the housing accommodation, I was able to make many great friends who were also participating in Beyond Academy, and the experience of living in Tokyo was all around amazing! The community coordinators were able to assist us with any questions that we had and made the overall experience very fun!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I did the program over again, I would make sure to schedule more solo traveling events and travel to more cities close to Tokyo.
Pros
  • Good food
  • Adequate support
  • Amazing friends
Cons
  • A bit far from the city center
  • I wish there were even more community events
  • I had to pay for my own flights, which made it more expensive
