Best in Beijing

I have been trying to find a good school to learn Mandarin for a while, I have tried a few schools in Beijing which have been very disappointing and cost me a lot of money, the teaching methods really weren't effective, picking up a text book and reading through it with a teacher was not a good way to learn. With the intensive Chinese program from that's mandarin I have been able to learn a lot even in just 2 weeks, the teachers tailor the classes for my personal needs and by using stories about typical daily situations I have managed to pick up a lot of vocabulary and it has really given me the confidence to practice outside of class. By using Mandarin cafe an online format where the teachers are able to write your notes during the lesson makes for a better learning experience as I don't have worry about writing down pinyin and translations which can take a long time. I am able to see all my notes from every class, online anywhere with my own log in details for the Mandarin cafe, I never have to worry about losing my personal notes. I will definitely continue studying at That's Mandarin and believe I will be able to speak Chinese more confidently.

An overall great experience, the campus is in a great location and is actually a really nice environment. When you're out and about in Beijing you will understand how important it is to have a calm & safe haven to escape too!

I really liked my teacher and felt that my Chinese came on a lot quicker than I had expected, because the purpose of my visit was solely based on learning Mandarin I was already motivated, so I was quite serious on taking everything I learnt in class and desperately applying it to real-life situations.

The difficulties I faced in Beijing were much more to do with the City itself, I never expected the culture shock to hit as hard as it did! Things like crossing the road seemed like a minefield to start with!

I would 100% recommend That's Mandarin, I am still a student with them through an online school program, which is also great. I hope this is helpful for those of you looking to stay in China. Be prepared for an initial shock/confusion!

What would you improve about this program?
The price is more than a lot of other schools, but from friends I met in Beijing who paid less money they were not experiencing the same quality that I did. So I think it really depends on your budget and priorities.

As an Indian girl raised in England, who spent the first 5 years of her life in Kenya, Chandni recently decided that it just didn't quite do it for her - there's still so much of the world to see! She is now living in Beijing, China studying an International Law Masters Degree and loving it! Along with her studies, she likes to pass her time learning Mandarin, painting and bellydancing.

Why did you pick this program?

I chose to move to China to immerse myself in a completely alien culture. I love the idea that in 10 years time I might be somewhere I never imagined. It's not about doing what you always dreamed of, is about doing something you could never have dreamed of.

What do you tell your friends who are thinking about going abroad?

It really depends on the person, actually. Traveling for a long period really suits some people and not others. I think it's a matter of why you are going. I mainly came to experience China; studying was secondary to it all. I think if it's the other way around - you go abroad for reason A, and changing countries is just secondary to that aim - it will be a totally different experience!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I would tell them to expect differences. Obviously there are differences in culture, food, and language when you move abroad; but I have been rather surprised at just how different studying a degree can be! Not only between the UK and China, but also talking to other international students and learning about their education systems.

What's your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?

My favorite story is probably my first day in China. I moved here with my boyfriend, who wanted to teach English in Beijing. His recruiting agency picked us up from the airport on an incredibly warm day towards the end of August. We were sitting in a taxi with the Chinese radio on, accompanied by a taxi driver who could not speak any English and all our belongings (weighing precisely 20kg due to plane weight restrictions). The taxi stopped after 35 minutes or so and the recruiter jumped out, telling us he had to go somewhere but that the taxi driver knew where to take us. We said goodbye and continued our journey. Suddenly the taxi stopped by a bunch of buildings with signs all in Chinese, opposite something that resembled a park. He told us to wait there (it took a while to understand him owing to my rusty Chinese). So we paid him, and sat on a bench in the middle of nowhere with all of our belongings and no working phone, waiting for someone we didn't know. It all turned out perfectly fine...China style. But looking back we were surprisingly calm about the whole thing! We just sat on the bench happily, thinking wow, we are in China! What next?

Chandni's thoughts on what to know before making a big move:

In China there still aren't a whole lot of foreigners or even tourists - not like Thailand. It means that a lot of people only speak Chinese and stare at you...a lot! But they are generally stares of intrigue, and it can be quite refreshing to go somewhere where people genuinely want to know about you and where you come from. Even if you are going somewhere that you know should have a lot of people who can speak and understand your native language, it never hurts to be able to speak some of the country's language that you are going to be living in for a while! It's also always good to know routine things like where your embassy is and emergency service numbers. One last thing - don't let the idea of being homesick hold you back - it's so easy these days to communicate with those you love, wherever they are!

What position do you hold at That's Mandarin? What has been your career path so far?

Anne: I have recently joined That’s Mandarin as their Online Marketing Manager. I started out my career as an Arts Coordinator and French Teacher at a government funded inclusion project in London’s Dalston area. After about 4 years I moved to New York and worked in a traditional PR firm, after 2 (fabulous) years in New York I moved back to the UK and worked freelance for a US based Web Analytics Company, doing online PR, SEO and Social Media for a number of their clients. Now, I am living in Beijing working at That’s Mandarin, spreading the Learn Chinese in China word!

Did YOU study abroad? If so, where did you go and what inspired you to go?!

Anne: Kind of, I gained a scholarship when I was 16 which allowed me to study at a French school in Rouen for 3 months. I am currently studying Chinese at That’s Mandarin, which is great. I was really nervous about starting the classes as I’ve been in Beijing for 5 months and had not been connecting with the language at all, however, to my surprise it’s been going really well and I’m looking forward to continuing.

What does the future hold for That's Mandarin - any new programs to share?

Anne: We recently launched a new Website which we’re very happy with and are looking forward to an action-packed summer with our Kids & Teens Summer Camp coming up! Bring on those warm days filled with learning, cultural activities and exploring Beijing and Shanghai! More excitement follows our recently adapted small group intensive programs, which have been adapted to include all the latest teaching methodologies thanks to our in-house education researchers. Our fully integrated online system “Mandarin Café” ensures that our students spend their lesson time speaking instead of manically taking notes! All new vocabulary is added by our teachers, ready for our students to review at their convenience.

What about the future of the industry? How do you think study abroad and international education will change over the next 10 years?

Anne: The future of language learning looks bright! Globalization and travel have made the need for multiple language knowledge a necessity, with Chinese quickly rising towards the top of the want-to-know language stakes. With the way things look now, I can only see this industry growing. The current job climate in the West is already encouraging graduates and even learnt professionals to try out a new view point and learn a language, after all that’s exactly what I did!
