My time in London!

My time in London, England this past spring were some of the best moments of my life. The people I met, the places I saw, and all that I learned from living abroad were some of the greatest things I could have experienced. Living in a city like London was such a privilege as I had access to pretty much anything I wanted to do at my fingertips. The public transportation system, or as they call it the Tube, was super convenient as I took it to and from school each day. It got me anywhere I needed to and efficiently! The culture of the city was one of my favorite parts. The different boroughs made it seem like I was experiencing a whole new city each and every time. My personal favorite being Soho, specifically the West End, as I am a total theatre nerd. The program itself was great as they provided us with housing in areas accessible in both getting us to and from school as well as local amenities we may have needed. I lived in the borough of Islington and absolutely loved it! The neighborhood was very safe and there was so much to do just within walking distance of my flat! The classes were also super interesting and there was a great variety in what you could take. I also loved how in majority of classes we went on field visits and got to experience so much of the city outside of the classroom. One of my favorite field visits was going to see Shakespeare's "Macbeth" at the Globe with my class! The professors were also fantastic and I felt as though it was really easy to connect with them as they were all both approachable and personable. The thing that is so special about London is just how much there is to do and never getting over it. This city will always have a special place in my heart and I hope someday to go back and do it all over again!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment for me was getting the courage to go abroad in a large city such as London. I am from a small town and go to college in a small town, so deciding to go abroad and live in one of the biggest cities in the world for an entire semester felt very daunting to me at first. I wasn't super comfortable doing things on my own like that and I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about it all. I overcame this by taking it one day at a time. It was very overwhelming at first trying to navigate the city and truly see all it had to offer, but I reassured myself that I would get used to it and learn to love it. Now after being there and living there for that amount of time I no longer have anxiety about large cities and doing things on my own. I learned to love going on solo dates and exploring parts of the city on my own.
Pros
  • Professors were great
  • How diverse of a city it was
  • Public transport
Cons
  • Housing was a little farther from school than expected
  • The fast city pace from time to time
  • Lots of things could be very expensive

AMAZING

I was already excited about my trip to London, but it absolutely exceeded my expectations. CEA CAPA was super accommodating and they had everything planned out for us during the trip. I loved the unique experiences that we had planned and we were able to get private tours from our wonderful guide Anthony and gained so much valuable information not just about the history of London and England, but about ourselves and traveling I made so many friends on this trip and memories to last a lifetime! I can't wait to go back!

CEA CAPA London Study Abtoad

I absolutely loved my experience with CEA CAPA and my study abroad program in London, England! I was able to not only study with professors from all over the world, but got to also have an internship doing accounting at the W Hotel in the heart of London. CEA CAPA offered many opportunities for me and my peers to be immersed in the English culture with day trips to places all around England and free opportunities to tour London staples such as seeing Wicked on the West End and touring Kensington Palace. I would highly recommend CEA CAPA to anyone who is interested in studying abroad!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of all the opportunities CEA CAPA has to offer! There were a couple day trips I did not end up going on and I regretted it afterwards because the students had so much fun! Say yes to everything!

The Best Way To Start Freshman Year

I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent my first semester of college abroad in London with CEA CAPA. If I could relive the experience, I would do it over and over again. I truly cannot recommend it enough. CEA CAPA provided outstanding accommodations: my housing included a private bathroom, kitchen, and a modern living space shared with just one roommate. It was far more comfortable and updated than a typical college dorm. One of my favorite aspects of the program was the excursions, which were included at no additional cost. I had the chance to visit iconic sites like Stonehenge and the Roman Baths, attend soccer games and plays, and explore many other unique experiences around the UK.
London is an incredibly diverse and global city, and I was able to fully immerse myself in the culture. From the endless food options and museums to nightlife and local markets, there was always something new to discover. I’ll be returning to London this summer to study abroad again, a decision largely inspired by the incredible experience I had with CEA CAPA.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried a traditional English breakfast for the first time! It included some familiar items like toast and eggs, but also some new ones like baked and blood sausage. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’m glad I gave it a try. It’s such an iconic meal, and it was fun to experience something so deeply rooted in local culture.
Pros
  • Excursions
  • Housing
  • Support from the CEA CAPA staff

A home away from home, London 2024

Blatantly put, I presumed it would be a quick adjustment for me. I had traveled to London previously and have traveled prior, so why wouldn't I have adjusted quickly? Well, anyone who has studied abroad knows that reality will hit you like a tube. Beyond all the change within my life, CEA CAPA was a place where I could almost forget about it all. I met individuals, whether peers or faculty, that were all extremely supportive and genuine people. Everyone is not just passionate about their role within education, but about London itself. I built a routine, even if it was just waving to reception when I walked through the door, and found a home away from home. It is a daunting adjustment at times, but I regret absolutely nothing. CEA CAPA played such a prominent role in my time abroad, and I look back so fondly at the connections I made with professors, mentors, and peers, along with the memories.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried a bao bun for the first time, and I thank fate for allowing me to do so. I absolutely love bao buns now and I especially miss the ones from London, they were scrumptious!
Pros
  • In my Analyzing and Exploring Global Cities class, we got to explore all over the city and learn a plethora of history regarding London!
  • CEA CAPA hosts lots of fundraisers and events to attend that made the experience so enjoyable! I ate lots of treats and enjoy a lot of pizza.
  • The location in Kensington is very convinent, especially in between classes. I loved exploring the variety of local coffee shops and running errands before or after classes. Kensington overall is a beautiful area of the city!
Cons
  • I lived in Kentish Town, and it was very difficult to get to class as the tube station was closed at the time.
  • Classes lasted 2 hours, and it simply just felt way too long. I struggled with paying attention a lot of the time and was often drained.
  • The food provided wasn't always great. It was low quality and really bland, and lacked lots of variety.

JUST DO IT!

I went abroad with my University in connection to CEA CAPA for my first semester of college! Many would say this is bold move, but I can not understate how pivotal of an experience it was for me and for setting up the rest of my college experience. Being in London for your first semester, it is also a bootcamp for college and life. You are thrown into a new country, with new social standards, and customs. However, learning to embrace this and allowing yourself to be uncomfortable. This has gained me confidence in all aspects of my life!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
In the first week I was in London, I fell and sprained my ankle. Naturally, this left me very distraught as London is a BIG city and a very walkable city. However, the CEA CAPA team and teachers were so incredibly helpful and supportive! They set me up with doctors and a plan of action.
Pros
  • Public Transport
  • School in a central area
  • Lots of hands on learning and field visits
Cons
  • lack of communication in some cases

First Semester in London

I spent the first semester of my freshman year in London through CEA CAPA and wouldn't trade it for the world. I have always wanted to travel the world and this program allowed me to kickstart that dream at 18. Not only did I have the best time living in London where there was never a shortage of things to do, but I was also able to travel outside of the city thanks to the immense resources CEA CAPA provided. While the apartment I was living in was small to say the least, I quickly grew to love it and miss it to this day. During the first few days after landing, the changes seemed almost too much to handle but with time and help from CEA CAPA, I found myself loving everything about it within a week.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most of your time! A semester or year may seem like a long time, but it truly flies by. Even when I was a week out from flying back to the states, my bucket list was nowhere near completed and I can't wait until I can return and keep checking things off.
Pros
  • no language barrier
  • loads of resources/support from CAPA
  • Similar (ish) culture to the US
Cons
  • London is an expensive city
  • Apartments tend to be cramped

Fantastic Program!

I had a wonderful experience with CEA CAPA. The staff on-site was extremely helpful. I felt very supported throughout my entire study abroad experience. Additionally, my professors were excellent. I learned so much and my classes were tailored to England and the British-experience. My professors provided all assignments with thorough feedback. We frequently went on field studies as a class and CEA CAPA provided weekend and afternoon activities. These activities allowed me to explore the city and England as a whole.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
During fall break I was able to go to Paris Disneyland!
Pros
  • Great staff
  • Fantastic Classes
  • Wonderful events
