Through our personalized advising, CEA CAPA takes steps to understand the needs of a diversity of student identities like the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition to diversity and identity training, CEA CAPA leadership engage in continuous department level project work to identify and revise policies and practices using the appropriate Justice, Equity, Diversity or Inclusion lens as a frame to reduce bias and barriers that impact students, faculty, and staff. CEA CAPA is intentional in elevating diverse student voices and providing a platform for a broad array of identities to share their experiences abroad. The CEA CAPA World Blog promotes stories and personal experiences from the perspectives of diverse student bloggers and vloggers.

Students are requested to disclose disabilities through the application health forms as part of their application and in discussion with their application advisor or program manager. The earlier CEA CAPA is made aware of learning or physical disabilities the better we can work with the student, institution, and overseas team to tailor an Individualized Education Program if necessary to support the student.

Student Review - CAPA London GBI

The CAPA London Global Business Institute Program, which I participated in during the Spring of 2020, had so much to offer! From a rigorous academic schedule that developed my knowledge of global business, to an incredible placement in an internship where I applied my skills in a hands-on environment, to a safe and comfortable housing arrangement, to fun and immersive events and activities. CAPA made me feel so supported both academically and socially. I loved every minute and would recommend the program to anyone interested in studying abroad!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice is to manage and organize your time the best that you can. Students are always busy and juggling several responsibilities. Your experience will be so much better if you take some during during the first few days to schedule out your internship, classes and homework, and travel schedule.

I... Had, the time of my Liiiifeee!

Absolutely thrilling. Teaches you about important balances between work and play and throws you into a world full of opportunities and networking. I got to work with a Non-profit for the royal family and the bar for me so so high now that I don't know how to move forward!!
It was the best time i'd ever had working.
additionally, it taught me a lot that I needed to know about managing real life situations and complications. Being out of my comfort zone helped me make new friends and connections that I now like to proudly call my family.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would find a way to manage my budget - and use the tube more often!

CAPA Study Abroad & Internship

At first, I was hesitant to study abroad because I fear that I had to do everything on my own and I was also worried about money. CAPA helped me every step of the way and made sure that I was all set before the departure. They also helped me with my financial issue by letting me know of the scholarships they offer to students who are in need of financial help. They were available all the time for questions and inquires. They got back to me very quickly when I emailed them my concerns and questions. They had different orientations for students studying abroad to come to learn more about the process and to meet with others. I love that they paired me with a "manager" to who I can reach out at any time. Every student is paired with their own "manager", who helps them with the entire process.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I wished I did more research because I didn't know that I could be directly enrolled in a university. I would much prefer it if I knew.

CAPA London

Studying abroad was of course a great experience! Studying abroad with the CAPA program enhanced my time abroad dramatically. There were always opportunities to immerse ourself in the culture from the activities that CAPA planned for students. Even with our time getting cut short due to COVID CAPA remained organized and kept all students best intentions in mind. CAPA's program was very organized and as a student in a country that is not their own I felt this was critical to making sure everyone's time abroad ran smoothly and it did.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
There are a lot of surprising things that happened to me while abroad, given I experienced new things everyday. The most surprising thing I did was take a SoulCycle class next to David Beckham. Also, I'd say being abroad during a global pandemic was pretty surprising as well.

Wish I could go back

Studied in London with CAPA fall 2019 - before COVID hit. So much fun, met some of my best friends there. Staff is great. Internship experience was amazing - still in contact with site supervisors! Great location within London! **your travel is included with the program cost so you do not have to keep topping up your oyster card (unless you go out of the designated zones) BIG PLUS! I stayed in a homestay but CAPA's my global city events allowed me to interact with more people in the program and explore the city in a way that was outside of my comfort zone but allowed me to thrive.

Best Time of my Life

Studying and interning abroad in London through CAPA was one of the best choices I've made. I met amazing people both at my internship site and the people I shared a flat with, expanding my network internationally. I learned so much about myself professionally, academically, emotionally, and socially, and am so happy to have the experience I did. Even though my program was cut a month short due to the pandemic and increasing threat levels, CAPA made sure everyone got home safely and in a timely manner.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Haggis! When I went to Scotland with my best friend on our spring break.

Everything you need to study abroad

Very appreciative my semester with CAPA. I studied abroad in London in spring 2019 and it was extremely helpful to have my housing, transportation, courses, and internship sorted out before arriving. They were able to fulfill my roommate request, so I was fortunate enough to live with my best friend in West Kensington. While it wasn't the biggest flat, the two of us lived very comfortably and even had a weekly cleaning service. It was a safe and convenient location in central London, plus the CAPA emergency/safety app helped me feel more at ease. The CAPA staff in London were available on site to offer assistance with classes and internships, important resources such as how to set up our phone plans, and recommendations of their favorite places. We also had the opportunity to go on some tours and excursions - most memorable were my trips to Oxford and Stonehenge & Bath. My courses and (guaranteed!) internship were aligned with my academic and professional goals. The one downside to the program is that my classmates were all American students. However, I ended up creating friendships with other Pitt students on my program and was able to maintain them once we were home.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
For me, the most nerve-racking moment was starting my international internship and attending my internship site's annual conference. Luckily, the internship was guaranteed, but I still had an interview with my internship site to make sure I was a good fit and knew what to expect. I overcame this challenge by keeping an open mind and willingness to learn. My bosses understood that I might not have experience with every task, and were appreciative that I tried my best and asked questions. By the end of my internship, I really felt like part of the team and was even offering guidance to interns who started after me. I gained not only practical marketing experience, but also cultural intelligence as I regularly interacted with coworkers from England, Ireland, Italy, Russia, and Germany. The CAPA internship course helped me to set goals along the way and learn how to incorporate this experience in my resume and interviews.

My Experience With CAPA

I had an amazing experience with CAPA. Before the program started, I had never left the country, so CAPA helped make the transition from the US to London go smoothly. The staff were always friendly and were able to connect with the students. While abroad, CAPA was able to help me get connected with an internship, where I learned a lot and felt like I grew as a person. Also, as a student with a learning disability, CAPA was able to give me accommodations to help me thrive during my time in London and helped me be successful in the classroom. There were also many fun excursions that the program provided that helped me learn more about the UK. For example, we were able to visit the Stonehenge and Oxford, among others. All in all, CAPA helped me feel confident in living, not only a new city, but a new country, where I have made many good memories.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment for me was having to live in an apartment in an unfamiliar country. Besides living in a residents hall at my home university, this was the first time I lived in an apartment and away from my parents. Knowing that I had to rely on myself was daunting. However, I was able to become adjusted to it and I enjoyed cooking my own food and being able to come and go as I please. In the long run, it made me feel confident and made me a more independent person. Staying positive definitely helped me overcome this because it kept me from thinking about my nerves. Making new friends helped too, because they kept me company and made this trip feel more exciting.
