Atlantis by CEA CAPA Abroad is the largest and most reputable pre-health study abroad organization for US undergraduates. To stand out in medical school applications and prepare for the demands of clinical training, pre-health students need early, meaningful exposure to patient care. Shadowing in Greece allows students to observe a broad range of medical specialties while experiencing a healthcare system shaped by both modern clinical practice and a rich medical history.

Through Atlantis, you will build cultural competence, deepen your understanding of physician-patient interactions, and experience healthcare in a global context. Atlantis!

Atlantis does such an amazing job at making sure all fellows are happy, comfortable, and getting the most out of shadowing! It was amazing getting to be in foreign hospitals for three weeks, you really learn so much and it’s truly a once in a lifetime experience! Site managers are extremely helpful and the Doctors truly want to teach! They are so knowledgeable and kind. It’s such an honor to be able to have learned from such amazing doctors. The opportunity to see various specialties was my favorite part because I was able to view different aspects of medicine and how each department operates. The residents are so helpful and kind! They all want you to feel welcome and comfortable and it’s great to know you aren’t a burden or in the Doctors way.

Most amazing experience of my life

The Atlantis Program is a very safe, fun, and exciting way to travel and get experience shadowing for pre-med students. It is the ultimate opportunity for undergraduate students to gain essential experience for applying to medical school and for personal growth in general. The site managers were amazing, the pre-departure information was very helpful, and the Atlantis post enrollment team was very very helpful throughout the entire pre-departure process. The food and atmosphere was phenomenal, and I would go back in a heartbeat. I would highly recommend this program to any undergraduate/ pre-med student, or anyone looking to travel abroad and gain valuable experience while doing so. The people I met were amazing, and it was for sure a life-changing experience.

What would you improve about this program?
There is nothing specific that this program needs to improve. Everything was pretty perfect.

Shadow Abroad for the Experience of a Lifetime

I traveled to Athens, Greece for a 3 week medical fellowship through Atlantis. I knew none of my fellows, and traveled for the first time by myself. I was so scared about this experience, but it changed my life!! I got to shadow multiple specialities and be in the operating rooms for actual surgeries. I shadowed departments like Radiation Oncology, Robotics, E.N.T., Cardiologist, EchoCardiology, and so many more. Also, I was able to watch one of the best Robotic surgeons preform a major gastrectomy. My site manager went to the doctor with me when I got sick and was always so helpful and accessible. I made so many new friendships with my amazing fellows. We traveled together on the weekends and have each others social media to keep up with each other now.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would only change the fact that I did not reach out to my fellows before I got there. I feel like it would've been better to kind of know them before.

Atlantis Fellowship in Athens Greece - 1.5 Weeks

I would definitely recommend Atlantis because of the amazing opportunities provided both inside and outside of the hospital at which the fellows are shadowing. Within the hospital I personally had the opportunity to shadow a variety of doctors, in a variety of specialties, observing a plethora of different surgeries/consultations, as well as to develop personal relationships with the medical professionals, which does not come as easily/naturally back home. Outside of the hospital, I gained a better understanding of a different countries medical system, got to experience differing cultures, learned to adapt/grow in a different environment, and established friendships with a group of like-minded, motivate, pre-medical students that I know will last a lifetime.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish that more dates were offered! Other than that, I thought that the Atlantis Fellowship was run professionally and effectively, which made the idea of traveling to a different country comfortable and so much fun!

Atlantis shadowing in Greece

I had an amazing time shadowing in Greece. I learned more than i thought I would and I saw more than I thought I would. Doing this program validated my love for medicine and helped me realize that it is what I want to do for the rest of my life. When I arrived in Greece, I wasn’t quite sure of what I was expecting, but I know by the end of the trip, this program far exceeded those expectations and then some. I would recommend this to everyone.

What would you improve about this program?
I didn’t find many improvements.

Atlantis, Patras , Greece

We got to shadow doctors and stand right over their shoulders as they performed surgeries. The doctors were also so helpful and ready to teach us. We would shadow about 5-6 hours a day and then we would go and experience the area around us and learn more about the culture. It was amazing!
From about 8am to 2pm we would see various surgeries from brain to blood vessel to ortho. There were many options. After that, we would eat the food of the area and go to the places that made Patras, Greece famous. The experiences were unforgettable.

Atlantis Fellowship in Thessaloniki

Atlantis truly exceeded all of my expectations. I came into this program expecting to shadow doctors, get my hours and maybe make a few friends. I came into this program not knowing any of the other 13 fellows and I left with a new family. Every day was another adventure, being in the hospital was very laid back, all of the doctors truly cared about your education and about involving you in their daily routines. I learned so much through all of the shadowing, but I learned so much about myself through the people I met. I made friendships that will last a life time. The 13 other fellows and I all agreed that we probably wouldn't of chosen to be friends if we all just saw each other on the street, but Atlantis brought all of our personalities together and made us realize that just because someone is different than you doesn't mean you can't get along with them. We all took multiple trips together, rented Airbnb's together and bonded so much over the course of 3 weeks. We it came time to say goodbye we were uncontrollably crying. I will never forget this experience or the people that it led me to. I am a kinder person and I have a more open mind on the world and on other people because of this trip. I would recommend Atlantis to anyone, it is truly an experience you will not regret!

What would you improve about this program?
Making sure that all of the fellows live closer to each other, and that all the specialties in the hospital that are offered to the fellows are interesting!
