New Delhi is a historically prized city. As the capital of India, it houses the government and has strengths in education, the arts, entertainment, and finance. Although the native language is Hindu, English is now most common. New Delhi is an extremely diverse and populous city, priding itself on its unique Hindu customs and historical buildings. From the city’s rich history to its modern energy, New Delhi is a great study abroad destination!
Studying abroad in India does come with a price tag—but fear not, there are many avenues out there for receiving financial aid. Here are just a few we came across:
Planning Your Trip
Culture and Immersion
Because culture is ingrained every inch of New Delhi, it should be no trouble getting a feel for the culture of the city. Lal Qila, built to resemble a miniature city, houses around 3000 people and is a must see. At Lal Qila you will see palaces, a mosque, public meeting halls and gardens. If you have interest in art, take a trip to the crafts museum. The museum itself is constructed like an Indian village and holds over 20,000 Indian artifacts and relics. Jami Masjid, India’s largest mosque, is an amazing free sight something that is not to be missed. When visiting the mosque, make sure to dress conservatively and prepare to take off your shoes. Another free daytime activity is a visit to the Lodi Gardens park. This immensely popular park is complete with bridges, decorative tombs, and grass great for picnicking or relaxing.
If you are interested in history, make sure to visit Humayun’s tomb; one of India’s first mausoleums to designed with Persian influence. Another great place to go is the National Museum. This three-story museum contains over 30 galleries that showcase India for past 500 years. Students will not have a dull moment in New Delhi because practically everywhere they turn they will be met with history and culture!
New Delhi is a super affordable place to live, so it’s a great option for those trying not to spend a fortune while studying abroad. Getting around New Delhi is extremely inexpensive because of the very convenient metro system. As well as being cheap and quick, the Delhi-metro is also air conditioned so it is a very comfortable ride. To save money on food, eat at one of the many food stands located all around the city. Because studying abroad can be very expensive, however, it is great to know your scholarship options! Be sure to check out the links lower on this page.
Culture Shock and Support
Because the culture in New Delhi will most likely be very different from what you are used to, make sure to pick an abroad program that offers adequate support!
IES Abroad, an abroad provider for 60 years, strives to create an extraordinary and unique abroad experience while keeping their students happy and safe. They have a full set of staff that is always available to assist students with anything from their housing situation to their travel arrangements.
SIT Study Abroad makes sure that their students get a true feel for the Indian culture by going beyond the classroom and encouraging them to analyze the customs of the city that they are studying abroad in. SIT is passionate about global education and pledges to make sure that students get the most out of their abroad experience.
Because the street traffic in New Delhi extremely severe, ride the Metro for more efficient transportation. The Metro can take you almost anywhere in the city and is an extremely clean and efficient way to get around.
If you have some adventurous taste buds, be sure to try Delhi’s fresh street food, Dilli-ki-Chaat. You will find things like fried dough filled with chicken and chickpeas along with many other Indian spices!
Visit Humayun’s Tomb on Fridays because admission is completely free! It is also a great place to relax or stroll around. This vibrant city is a great place to study abroad because it is a historical gem and a melting pot of different people and cultures!
