Great program for equine people

This was first time out of the United States and doing this study abroad program was a blast! The professors are extremely generous with their time and services they provide for us. We went on educational field trips to fantastic locations such as the school of veterinary medicine near Edinburgh. The horses we worked with had such unique personalities and were great teachers to students who have never ridden in an English saddle. The weekend outings were a lot of fun especially to the city of Edinburgh to see the castle and St. Andrews.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish we had more riding time because I was given a false impression of the riding. I was originally told that we would be jumping more than what we really did and we would even do some cross country. We did not do any of those activities so I was extremely disappointed. I also wished we had more time on our weekend outings. We would get into the cities and only be given a few hours to explore before we had to meet up and leave to go back to the college.

Awesome experience

The way that this program was advertised left something to be wanting in the actual experience. It was advertised as right outside Edinburgh which is not true- it's a 30-45 minute taxi ride into and out of town which is expensive.
The campus is rural and it's beautiful but the town it's in is quite small and is also a decent car ride away (about 15 minutes).

The horses we got to work with are great and have a multitude of talent.
The staff is excellent and are super helpful.

Overall an absolutely fantastic experience.

What would you improve about this program?
The way that the program is pitched to students. It's not all riding and I didn't have nearly the amount of down time to travel the country on my own as I was told I would. The schooling was great but there was more written work than I expected.

Great Time in Scotland

I absolutely loved my time in Scotland. I enjoyed all the staff at Oatridge and they really tried to help us have a great experience in and outside of the classroom. The classes were not very challenging but we still learned things that I couldn't back home. Learning about the management practices over here was the most interesting part. The excursions on the weekend were great and we saw a lot of the high points of Scotland but I wish we were told before hand of the free days so we could plan out a bit more. The food and wifi were not great but I came to experience Scotland and learn about horses and that's what I did!

Fantastic Experience

There is no reason to not take this program if you love horses and want to travel. The campus is beautiful but it has typical college beds and college food. I'd recommend bringing a laptop because the library isn't always open and it's necessary for school work. I brought an Ipad and it didn't cut it. A lot of people had complaints but if you take into account the fact that we are on a college campus and not in a 5-star hotel then you'll be fine. Weekend trips were a lot of fun but if you want to do more than that then you have to plan it yourself. Come prepared. Especially if you want to visit the isle of skye. I'm kicking myself that I never read the travel books I bought until the last week.

What would you improve about this program?
More opportunities to ride at higher levels, longer days into cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, More realistic advertising so we're not expecting more than what we received.

Equine Program

Day to day was fine. The wifi is not so good and the living is a little rough. The hot water half the time doesn't work all of the appliances in one of the kitchens was broken. The food is mediocre. A lot of the staff at oatridge are not cooperative. We would ask for something and then it would be promised. Like the tv remote. then it came time for us to need the remote and no one would help us find it. The staff will ask us questions about when we are leaving or if we will be here for lunch and we have no idea if we will and then they get mad at us for not knowing. also they wont let you use the phone which is rough because all of us don't have international minutes.

What would you improve about this program?
More riding time. More day trips that are longer. Taking us on more outings to other places. there is not much in uphall. having staff available 24 hours a day 7 days a week

Response from Adelante Abroad

Mikaela - thanks for taking the time to complete the review. Your details are helpful for us to continually update and improve the program. We o try to warn everyone that wifi can be spotty prior to their departure. Food is a tough one, hard to change a culture of a 4-week program and it is a college campus! Phone we do advise that Viber is good for communications, and also that you can buy a UK cell phone cheaply with no contract. Staff aren’t expecting our students to ask to use the phone!

We have seen mixed comments on the day trips, but I think the overall feeling is that everyone would like the opportunity to stay longer in the cities. In such a short program it may not be possible to fit in any more excursions but definitely something that can be looked into for future years based on everyone's comments.

Lastly, having staff available to our students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week would triple the program cost, of course. We provide emergency contact information for if the need arose.

We truly appreciate your comments - thank you.

Equine Study Program

Overall I found this program very enjoyable. The classes were informative and we were offered hands on experience with horses. I really enjoyed riding and also visiting the yards of experienced dressage riders and eventers. We got to ride multiple times a week on a variety of horses. All of the teachers were very friendly and willing to work with you. I also enjoyed the weekend trips to interesting places like Edinburgh and Loch Ness. I would have liked to go to the Burgie Horse Trials though! I would recommend this program to anybody who is interested in learning more about horses, whether or not they have had a lot of experience in the past.

What would you improve about this program?
I didn't really like the rooms we stayed in, the bathroom was extremely small, and the beds could have been a bit comfier. A bit more variety in the food served would have been nice as well.

Equine Program

This program was extremely fun and I would recommend it to anyone. The extra trips we went on during the weekends were a great opportunity to see the scenery of Scotland. The classes were a good overview of the things that I had already learned from college. I enjoyed the riding aspect of the program, especially since I have only ridden western, it was a good experience to get to ride english and jump. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Scotland!

What would you improve about this program?
The beds are very uncomfortable and having french fries every day for lunch and dinner was a little tiring.
