Equine Study Abroad

This program was very structured and offered a lot to students. We spent a good deal of time interacting with horses. Many of the Anatomy lessons were hands on using the horses to learn where muscles, bones, etc. were placed. The weekends were spent at different locations throughout Scotland. The instructors were very friendly and incredibly helpful. We rode 2 or 3 days a week. I would have liked to have ridden more and the food left much to be desired. Overall, I definitely recommend this program to any horse enthusiast.

What would you improve about this program?
Adelante needs to communicate more with SRUC and both entities need to communicate more with students. The food was pretty sub par and I would like a real shower.

Review of Scotland

This experience was very enlightening. I learned a lot through the classes, and there were many hands-on opportunities. All of the teachers were very nice, and we were able to see different places and incorporate them into our classes.

What would you improve about this program?
The food. I would rather not have to eat french fries (chips) every day, twice a day. It gets gross.

Scotland

Trip was great with a awesome staff and excellent planning for the weekends. Lots of encouragement to try things and experience Scotland. The various locations like the castle, the different loch, and all the celebrations that occurred while we were here made it so much better. Definitely not the last time in Scotland.

What would you improve about this program?
It was sad that the sports center was closed cause our evenings were a little quiet, and taking a taxi to go to other places was expensive.

An Experience to Remember in Sunny Scotland

I had an amazing experience in Scotland. Although it was hard to sit in the classroom sometimes, the classes were very informative and the staff made them as fun and interesting as possible. The horses were great and we made friends with some of the students here, which helped on evenings where we didn't have anything planned. We got to see Loch Lomond and Loch Ness, take a trip up to Aberdeen, go to the Perth horse races, explore Edinburgh and Linlithgow, and go to the Royal Highland show. We were lucky to have AMAZING weather the whole time we were here. It was very sunny and warm, and it only rained a few times which isn't normal for Scotland but was much appreciated. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better time here at Oatridge and I made great friends that I will definitely keep in contact with and hope to see again.

What would you improve about this program?
The food was not very good. The cafeteria staff were very nice and friendly but there weren't very many healthy options and we got sick of it pretty quickly. The packed lunches were also pretty unappetizing.

In addition, it doesn't seem like there is a whole lot of communication between Adelante and the staff here at the college but then again I don't know. At the beginning, I got the impression that Adelante didn't have a very good idea of what we would be doing and what the facilities would be like.

This program was excellent. The staff was very supportive and often drove us wherever we wanted to go. We went out quite a bit, and got to see a lot of Scotland. The courses were simple yet informative and the riding was fantastic. I would goose this program again in a heartbeat.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish the courses had been more challenging.

My Experience

The most difficulty I had there was the internet due to it always being down. There were no hesitations to fix the problem but just very irritating for a lot of us because we used Skype to contact family from back home. I really liked how the staff, students, and just the general public seemed to treat us, they were all very nice and accommodating.

Scotland the Brave

I have to say, that this experience was one that I will remember for the rest of my life. I loved Scotland, and all of the people I met there. The equine classes were both very interesting and could be challenging at times. I feel like I learned a lot from this experience. The riding instruction was wonderful, though I wish I had been better prepared for it regarding appropriate attire. If you plan on going on this trip keep in mind that they do not allow you to wear clothes with hoods when working with horses, and you will want something warm to wear. I would also recommend half-chaps to keep from the saddle pinching your calves. The lessons themselves were wonderful; I felt like we each got individual advice even though we were in fairly large groups. If you love horses, then I would recommend this program for you. If you are not fond of rainy, cold weather, don't go to Scotland. Of course, once you get used to it, it's no big deal. ;)
