SRUC Equine Science Study Abroad

This program was not only very educational and very applicable to my desired education and future employment, it was also a blast and I made so many friends. The structure of the program balances school work, sight seeing, and English riding lessons very well so you don't feel like you're sitting in a classroom the whole time you're studying abroad. The classes were very hands on and great for students that learn visually and by doing rather than listening to a lecture. There is a lot of freedom given with assignments so it is imperative that you are able to manage your time wisely so you aren't stressed out at the end of the program trying to get everything done all at once. The living accommodations were very nice, my only complaint is that the mattresses are very hard and the pillows are quite thin so I had some issues with back and neck pain for the majority of the trip.

Amazing experience

Very educational and fun. Riding for half the day and class for the other half. Lots of free time to explore and be a tourist. Louise is the best. Sam and Liz the riding instructors are very patient and helpful. There is a very wide range of horses with lots of personalities. You will certainly wind up eating haggis at some point whether it be haggis burgers, haggis breakfast patties, or regular haggis. We ride just about every day so make sure to bring enough riding clothes. Its easy to forget to study for the exams at the end with everything going on, but you really do need to do a decent amount of studying. Classes are very hands on and you go out to the yard a lot to put the classroom learning in to practice. This also means that there is a practical portion of the exam at the end.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Bring a raincoat and some short rain boots like duck boots. Stay a couple extra days before or after the program. Maybe spend one of the free weekends to visit another country. If you take a train that has reserved seating as an option it means you really probably will need a reserved seat.

Equine Summer Program in Scotland

It was an amazing experience. It is a great Study Abroad to take, especially if this would be your first one. Overall the academics are not hard, but they give you a view of anatomy and physiology for the horse. This is very useful as most anatomy classes are for humans. The staff is great and wonderful. The riding was a lot of fun. It was nothing very advanced, however it is a great way to strengthen your basics, especially in jumping. It was also a wonderful trip to see new styles of training and riding. I felt the fitness portion of the program was very interesting and I greatly enjoyed learning new methods to bring a horse into fitness and how to assess a horse's fitness. I greatly recommend this experience and I am sad it is only a four week program.

What was your funniest moment?
There is not a whole lot that needs to be changed about this program however I wished there was more riding time, or perhaps chances for individual lessons here and there.

Equine Studies

I had an amazing time while I was here. The people here are so welcoming and happy that we are here. The program was very well organized. I was nervous to ride but when I got here that instructors made me feel right at home. Through the program I have grown tremendously with my riding capability. I now have the confidence of riding that I lacked before I came here. For the class room, the teachers were very nice. They wanted you to do well and helped in any way they could. The country is beautiful. Just looking outside the rooms you could see the beautiful hills. The planned events that we had while we were hear were awesome as well. They allowed us to see Scotland and how beautiful it is. The nature here is gorgeous and hiking around is a great thing to do while you are here. I enjoyed this program so much and very happy that I came here and did this program.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment I had was getting on a horse for the first time because I had not ridden before. I overcame it by getting on it and the instructors making me feel confident about it.

Emma Davie Equine Program Review

This program was amazingly engaging and truly a great experience for expanding my equine knowledge as well as my horizons. The staff was incredibly educated and caring and looked after us the entire trip. The classes were intuitive and practical and the trips around Scotland to equine-related activities were truly once in a lifetime experiences. The work was never overwhelming and was very practical. Riding was my personal highlight the horses were amazing and the instructors were supportive and very experienced. We were never pushed beyond our abilities and the groups were very even and fair. The campus staff and facilities were also very accommodating they really helped ease us into the transition. Overall the experience was very good and I would happily do it again.

What would you improve about this program?
The only improvement I would suggest is a little more guidance within the first few days and less activities early in the morning when we arrive as many of us were jet lagged.

SRUC Equine Science Study Abroad

I absolutely loved this program. The staff/professors were very welcoming and accommodating. The lectures were informative and incorporated hands-on practical which I definitely appreciated. The riding class definitely helped me hone my skills and was something I always looked forward to. It's relatively easy to get around to explore other areas of Scotland. Definitely keep cash on you for cab rides to and from the campus! The riding trainers are amazingly helpful and take all of your concerns and comments to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. The staff also organized group trips to different cities outside of Broxburn which I really liked because if I were to go to those places by myself it would have been far more expensive transportation-wise.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have planned my days off a little bit better so I could have seen more of Edinburgh and Glasgow but over all this was still an amazing experience. I just wish the program lasted longer! I don't want to leave yet.

A Great Experience for those with little travel

This program was absolutely amazing! The classes are very helpful, and gives a different perspective on the horse industry, especially the Fitness class. All of the instructors (both class and riding) are so nice and extremely helpful. The program planned several outings to help see some of Scotland's tourist spots without having to pay or get there on our own. There was still a free weekend, for which the instructors helped us plan a two day trip, and get to the airport/train station/etc. The riding classes are so much fun, and all of the horses have such unique little personalities, and clearly love their job. There was a slight bit of miscommunication between Adelante and our housing, but hopefully that will be fixed for future programs! The dorms we were in were still very nice and clean, but it was a shared bathroom for each floor, and they were smaller than expected. But like I said, they were clean and livable. Over all it is a fantastic opportunity to bond with the girls on your program, and the locals as well! I would highly recommend this program for equine students.

What would you improve about this program?
I would advise more clear communication between Adelante and the campus regarding housing, but that's it!

Adelante Equine Study Abroad

I loved studying abroad here at Oatridge College in Scotland! We were able to ride the SNEC horses, and go on adventures around Scotland. I highly recommend getting out from the campus and travelling as much as possible, such a cool country! I definitely learned a lot here, studying Equine Anatomy and Fitness. The staff here at the college is so nice, welcoming, and helpful! I 10/10 recommend applying for the program if horses and traveling are some things you are passionate about.
