Volunteering in Bali

Being able to be a part of the volunteering team in Bali has been one of my most memorable experiences. Taking part in the volunteering program for 5 weeks has allowed me to immerse and thoroughly interact with the local community within the homestay compound, staff, and people around the village. Prior to reaching the destination, IVHQ has provided a lot of support pre-program. As a first timer taking part in volunteering through an organisation, I had a lot of doubts and uncertainty yet my program manager was able to promptly answer questions with clear responses. There was a lot of step-by-step guidance especially in settling paperwork such as obtaining a visa and I was in-touch with the local team even before arrival which made the transition a smooth one. The volunteering experience has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone through interacting with local people where language barriers exists yet I was still able to feel comfortable with the facilities that were provided. The living conditions were safe, comfortable and very well taken care of. The orientation program that was organised allowed me to better understand Bali and I was able to learn more about the local culture while this provided me with the opportunity to meet new people within the volunteering program. Choosing Bali as the program destination has allowed me to get a glimpse of the community lifestyle that remains strong within the culture while appreciating the nature that the island has to offer. The local host family are very friendly and the staff from Green Lion Bali (the local organisation) has provided a lot of support and are willing to help whenever needed. I thoroughly enjoyed the volunteering experience and will look forward to taking part in another within the near future and IVHQ is definitely an organisation that I would apply through.

Best experience of my life

The most amazing experience in my life. The Bali program is amazing, amazing people with so much to give, I wouldn’t chance my two weeks in Bali for nothing in fact I think it was a little period of time. I would love to come back to Bali again! I’ve met great people that first became friends and now they’re family to me. The orientation week was the best, they give you th opportunity to get along with other volunteers and most important to know about Bali culture, I loved to learn some Balinese language it was so fun. The coordinators are the best, they give 100% of them all the time always taking care of every detail of our things. Besides all this, in the orientation week Bali program give us the opportunity to visit temples, assist to a Balinese dance show (amazing!), cooking classs was so fun and the flower offering class was one of my favorites. It is amazing that besides volunteering you have the opportunity to meet new friends and learn about their culture which now I admire. Never going to forget my week in Ubud; as of now it’s my favorite place in the world! After that I traveled to Nusa Penida island where I worked in the turtle conservation for a week, incredible experience, to clean tanks, clean the turtles and some other activities like cleaning the beach and streets was such a inclredible experience! Besides the island is beautiful and t has so many amazing beaches to visit. The people there are so nice and so welcoming, I really thought to extend my volunteer program for at least 2 more weeks but unfortunately I couldn’t. BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! Never going to forget Bali.

Volunteering with IVHQ in Ubud, Bali - AMAZING EXPERIENCE

Volunteering with IVHQ was one of the best decisions I could've made for myself this summer! I had a strong support system before departing, while I was in Bali, and even upon returning as coordinators touched base with me about the program and overall trip. I am constantly amazed by my interactions within other cultures around the world, and getting to know the other volunteers from such a diverse array of countries was such a rewarding experience. I would without a doubt volunteer with IVHQ again. They have a great variety of programs in so many countries! I would love to go back to Bali, or to another place where I could participate in a different program within a different culture. There is so much to learn from opportunities such as this, and IVHQ made this opportunity of learning, serving, and personal growth possible for me!

My experiences in Bali

If I did a list with the best five experiences in my life, Bali definitely would be on the top of it. I spent there in Ubud 4 and a half weeks and everything just truly met with my expectations. One of my favorite part was the introduction week because it really helps you to get through the basic hard things at the beginning when you are in a different country or even on a different continent. That one week gave us the opportunity to meet new people and make friendships just before the program even started. It also gives a little taste of the culture and show you the most significant places which are really amazing.
I was also very satisfied with my volunteering program there which was teaching. All the children were so adorable, and you just felt that they are so desperate to get a little knowledge of English. Of course they lost sometimes their attention (like in every 30 minutes) and started focusing on other things, but that’s what children normally do, so you could just start playing with them something and then return back to teaching and that was all.
The only thing which was different than what I imagined was that I didn’t have to spend the whole day volunteering and teaching. I did the preparation for the class in the mornings and teaching the children in the afternoon so normally I had time to visit places and do some sightseeing between mornings and afternoons and that was so good, because you had the chance to explore the whole island as well.
The accommodation and the foods were also fascinating and delicious. Before I went there I just tried to put as low my expectation as I could, but when I get there I realized that it was unnecessary, because everything was so clean and the food was amazing too. You even had the chance to do your laundry, to use the swimming pool there for free, play ping pong, and just cross over the street in the middle of nowhere to get to a warung (bar) where you could just chill or get a drink. :) If you had any problem, all the staff members were there to help you, they were really helpful and you could get free rides by the local taxi drivers to the city center as well, which was great.
To sum up, if I had to recommend a place to do some volunteering, I would definitely recommend to volunteer with Green Lion Bali through IVHQ, because you could hardly get a better opportunity in your life, for sure. To live there, to get to know the culture, to meet and help children, and to be part an amazing community like that was… that’s what Bali can give to you, so just don’t miss the chance. :)

What would you improve about this program?
Just gives us a little bit more information about the volunteering program before we go there just to make us a little bit more prepared. :)

Teaching in Bali

My recent volunteer trip to Bali was more than I expected. It was my first time volunteering overseas, I am 53 and I traveled by myself. I have traveled by myself before this trip but never internationally. I was a little anxious but the help and support along the way from the staff at IVHQ eased my worries. They were pretty quick at answering my questions. Once I arrived in Bali, except for one glitch in my pick up at the airport, the staff there was just as amazing and always willing to help and extremely friendly. Bali was an amazing place and I never felt unsafe. I would highly recommend the trip through IVHQ.

Bali- Ubud

I volunteered in Bali- Ubud, through IVHQ. Bali was an incredible experience. I made life long friends, taught a class of 6th graders, and got to experience a beautiful new culture. The staff were amazing, and helped out all the volunteers with whatever needs they had. The location was beautiful, we were situated in a village 20 minutes outside the town of Ubud. This allowed us to integrate in a real Balinese community. The people (the volunteers, locals & staff) were second to none. I volunteered for five weeks- by the end of those 5 weeks I was wishing I had 5 more! The only downside to this programme is missing the children you taught and the friends you made after you leave! A member of the IVHQ team was on hand from the minute I booked the trip. She answered any questions I had, and checked in with m to make sure everything was going well during the volunteer programme.
Volunteering with IVHQ in Bali was absolutely the best thing I ever done. I thoroughly recommend anyone interested in volunteering abroad to consider IVHQ Bali. You wont regret it.

Bali - Construction

I did the construction and renovation project for 4 weeks

The orientation week is a good way of getting to know how where everything is and I found a lot of the actives fun/interesting. You get to know the drivers and especially the other volunteers. Connecting with other people from all across the world was one of the things I enjoyed the most besides the actual work with the school.

The Green Lion was a great facility and the fact that they have a pool was something I really appreciated. The food is good but be prepared for a lot of rice. Staff is also very welcoming and always meet you with a smile.

Weekend trips were also really fun since you got to see a lot of the other places around Bali. Make some good friends and be incisive and you’ll end up having a bunch of fun.

Also the only thing I regret is not having some time after my program to really travel around and stay at one place more than one or two nights. A week or two after the program would really have made the trip even better!

Questions & Answers

It depends on where you are going and how long you are staying. For Indonesia, you do not need one if you are staying less than 30 days.

In Ubud, the total fees will be at least US$1,979. You can opt to pay for more flexibility if you like too :)
