4 weeks in Bali with IVHQ

My name is Ruby and I'm from Australia. I recently spent 4 weeks volunteering on the teaching program in Bali with IVHQ. I cannot recommend IVHQ enough and it is indescribable how much my 4 weeks in Bali meant to me.

I met people from all over the world and shared some of the most enjoyable experiences of my life with these new friends. Each weekend we travelled all over Bali but were always happy to return home to our village life to relax by the pool, eat delicious home-cooked food and meet the new volunteers that had arrived.

Teaching in the village school was more difficult than I was expecting but all the more rewarding because of it. The children I met were so energetic and enthusiastic to learn that in returning to Australia I felt ever more appreciative of my own opportunities and education. Long after I left Bali I am motivated by the people I met there- The children who persisted with their worksheets whilst it was pouring down rain, the taxi drivers who demonstrated kindness to every person who entered their car, the staff at Green Lion who made sure every volunteer felt safe and all the like-minded friends I made.

This experience was the best of my life so far and I will definitely be travelling with IVHQ again. If you're thinking about going - JUST GO and go for as long as you possibly can. You won't regret it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My biggest piece of advice is stay for as long as you can! I was worried 4 weeks wasn't going to be enough but I left feeling super jealous of all my friends staying for 12 weeks. Many of my friends were only there for 2 weeks and every single one of them wished they'd booked for longer!

Nusa Penida Turtle Conservation Project

NP feedback

A few weeks ago I had the most wonderful 2 weeks east of Bali, Indonesia at the Nusa Penida Turtle Conservation Project. The experience of taking care of the turtles and contributing to their survival was immensely rewarding. The beach clean ups were so satisfying realising that everything we collected would be one less risk to turtles and other marine life. I have a way to go with the morning crab catching though! I was impressed by the management of the project and each of the 4 coordinators were a delight to be around. They made every effort to make our stay enjoyable and went over and above to support us, even helping with information about what we could do on the weekends and helping arrange transport. Their dedication to the project is an inspiration. They actively encouraged our feedback and suggestions for improvements. The weekly beach bonfires were a blast and clearly there’s no end to the talent of the coordinators who entertained us with great music. IVHQ were always very responsive leading up to the volunteering and supportive throughout with emails to see how it was going. I am very happy to have arranged my volunteering through such a professional organisation like IVHQ. Transfers were a breeze too. I treasure the friendships that grew with other volunteers and many of us are regularly in touch from all our different locations around the world. I’d encourage anyone volunteering at this project to think of ways you can reduce your plastic consumption e.g take your own refillable water bottle, container for take away foods, calico bag for laundry - the public laundry services will return your washing to you in plastic if you don’t supply your own bag.

What would you improve about this program?
Introduce a Nusa Penida Turtle Conservation Project branded calico bag, keep cup and refillable water bottle for volunteers to purchase. As far as possible have them produced locally so that it generates local employment.

Ivhq volunteer teaching programme in Bali. :)

Hey guys, I went on my first volunteering abroad experience with IVHQ for June & July last summer of 2018 and I could not have had a more magical experience. IVHQ have been unparalleled to any organisation i have ever have been lucky enough to be involved with. When I first found them online I remember thinking this just looks pretty great but was it just really well advertised...I can reassure you it wasn't! From the beginning before the trip even began the staff were so friendly & helpful. They would always get back to me within no time about any questions or if I just had queries about travel insurance or flights etc! By the time I was ready to head to Bali I just knew instinctively I went with the right group. It is really well thought out program which is hugely down to the people & organisers at IVHQ that made the whole experience. From the moment you arrive in bali you are picked up in the airport, we were collected in groups & driven to the IVHQ house where we were warmly welcomed by the Indonesian staff. Everything was covered from basics like accomadation ( the house which is so so incredibly beautiful! (The views/pool/activity rooms/outdoor icecream truck!) the food (not 5 star but It was still really tasty) taxi rides, excursions & trips... To the actual Teaching program itself. You were always given anything you needed for classes in prep. For me getting to teach with another volunteer teacher in the local school was one of the highlights! You really feel like you couldn't be in a better place helping teach english to the children.. It is hard to leave but you feel good knowing you've made a difference in a childs education & life! It gave me such a love of teaching & volunteering. Sorry I'm finishing up! The ivhq staff remain in contact throughout the entire process beginning to finish so don't worry about ever feeling alone! Even a year after my program finished I emailed some staff members at IVHQ about possibly getting a certificate & three members of the team got back to me within the day with a certificate & a reference letter to show that I was part of the program. They are such a helpful kind group to go through! You will be in for such a treat!! It will be the highlight of your summer and definitely make you hungry for more volunteering! Enjoy your new adventures! Best of luck!! Ruth

What was your funniest moment?
Probably the music that the Indonesian taxi drivers (Or just mine) listen to!.. 😂😂 If your a fan of 90s classics.. boy bands or Mariah Carey! your in for a great time.. Kareoke galore!

Bali, Indonesia Sea Turtle Conservation

I recently went to Bali, Indonesia for the IVHQ sea turtle conservation volunteer trip. This was the first trip abroad that I had ever planned entirely on my own and IVHQ was very supportive and communicative throughout the planning process. The trip itself was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I met volunteers from all over the world and made memories that will last a lifetime. The program gave me a routine schedule for my volunteer work that allowed me to do productive work while still getting plenty of free time to explore the country and get the most out of my short trip. I highly recommend using IVHQ if you want to make a positive impact on the community you travel to and fully immerse yourself in a new culture. The in-country staff were friendly and energetic, making for an even better experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I only went on this trip for two weeks. I HIGHLY recommend going for a longer period of time. IVHQ did a good job of giving us free time to explore the island but Bali is too beautiful to be ready to leave after two weeks. My only regret is not spending more time there because I enjoyed the trip so much.

Great experience!

This was my second time volunteering in Bali with IVHQ and it was just as great as the first time. The first time I stayed for three months and made friends from all over the world, including the coordinators, which is why I just had to go back this year and visit them. Even the kitchen staff still remembered me and vere super excited to see me, which was absolutely heartwarming.
Last time I had a lot of questions about safety, visa application, etc. and the IVHQ Team was very helpful, friendly and quick to respond. This time I was fairly relaxed as I already knew everything but I was checked- in on and genuinely felt like they wanted me to enjoy the experience and feel save, which I definetely did! Loved it and will be going back as soon as possible!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Please don't expect a five-star hotel when you get there. I know it seems obvious when you go volunteering abroad but somehow people still managed to come there with completely ridiculous expectations. The accomodation is clean and exactly as described on the website, if not nicer. Just read the description on the website and then you will have realistic expectations and have an amazing time! You're on a beautiful island so just be excited!

Best investment of your time and money!

I had been wanting to travel internationally for a long time and wanted to do something meaningful while I was there. IVHQ offered so many different program options in tons of different countries - all places I wanted to visit too! They were quick to answer any emails with any questions I had along the way. Best of all, of the bunch of volunteer abroad organizations that I researched, IVHQ offered the lowest program fees I could find!
I ended up choosing the Turtle Conservation project in Bali! And it was incredible! The accommodations, food, local team, and activities were so much fun! I had enough time to go and explore the islands while also helping the local community! I highly recommend IVHQ and the Turtle Conservation program! The memories I’ve made and the fulfillment I feel is unbeatable!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Definitely opt for the orientation week option! Such a great way to learn about the country you’re a guest in.

Amazing Experience!!

I had an amazing experience volunteering abroad with IVHQ. Everyone from my co-volunteers, coordinators, cooks, drivers, and kindergarten students were so incredibly kind and genuine. In particular, I found that this trip was the ideal combination and balance of volunteering and travelling. The volunteer aspect, in which I worked with children in a kindergarten, was incredibly rewarding and definetly the highlight of my trip. On my free time, I was able to see many different parts of the island and even got to travel to nearby islands on the weekend. IVHQ does a great job of accommodating to students desires to both volunteer and travel. After having such a great experience on my first IVHQ trip to Bali, I am very eager to have the opportunity to go on another IVHQ volunteer abroad trip.

First and awesome volunteering experience with IVHQ

Volunteering abroad to a new country, with a completely different culture, seem very challenging and risky, but it is definitely one of the best decisions I have taken in my life.
It was my first time volunteering abroad, therefore it was a little bit scary but thrilling at the same time. However, IVHQ made it seem very easy and safe with its assistance from the day I reserved my place online till the end of my volunteering program.
My volunteer experience in Ubud, Bali, with IVHQ, was an awesome journey. It gave me the opportunity to visit a beautiful city, while immersing myself in its culture. During this period, I felt useful because I was actually contributing to the enhancement of other people's lives. Finally, volunteering allowed me to develop long-lasting friendships with amazing people from all over the world.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most of it!
Contribute, visit and socialize as much as you can.

Questions & Answers

It depends on where you are going and how long you are staying. For Indonesia, you do not need one if you are staying less than 30 days.

In Ubud, the total fees will be at least US$1,979. You can opt to pay for more flexibility if you like too :)

Hi Salma, Great to hear that you're interested in volunteering and that your parents are supporting your trip! IVHQ Volunteers must be 18 years or older to participate on our programs. IVHQ requires that all volunteers participating on the program be at least 18 years old. However, if you volunteer with a parent or guardian on the same project as you, you can go at younger than 18. It is important to note that the local organization, Green Lion Bali, does host volunteers from other organizations other than IVHQ, and some of those organizations have different age requirements...
