I had the time of my life in Arusha. I met so many amazing people from all over the world that I will now stay in contact with for the rest of my life. I loved the school I was placed at. I will remember those kids forever. I also did some great excursions such as the safari in the Serengeti and ngorogoro crater and went to the beautiful margoroto forest. Arusha was a lovely small city and if you can get past the overwhelming part at first you will love the locals. I wish I was still there. I will be going back.

It's been a bit over a week since I got back from my volunteering experience with Maasai Immersion in Tanzania but my heart and mind is still there. Seeking reconnection with myself, I not only found it, but I also got to relive some of the happiest memories from my childhood through the eyes of those kids. I’ve never felt so welcomed in my life as the Makayuni Maasai people welcomed us. I burst into tears of gratitude and happiness just to be there, to join the villagers, and to learn from them. It felt like home. I still miss waking up to the sound of the donkey and kids singing before school starts. They are well prepared for their visitors and you will have the best accommodations and probably one of the best food you've tried in Tanzania! Thank you IVHQ for opening this program and this amazing experience!

volunteering in the childcare/teaching program in arusha is one of the best decisions I've ever made, not only because I was able to give back, while emerging myself in the incredible lifestyle and environment tanzania has to offer, but also because of everything it taught me about the people, the country and the cultural heritage; I learned so much about myself and the other volunteers in the program, with whom I formed long-lasting and valuable friendships with, because working with like-minded people on shared values provides the support you need while on the program; I am incredibly grateful for this summer and wish I could go back and relive everything all over again!

some safety issues regarding commutes to and from placement, unfortunately
while the program price is relatively low, add-ons are significantly more expensive
lots of people travel accompanied, but even though it can be more challenging traveling solo, it can also be more exciting, because it requires you to be more self-reliant, and it can boost your self-confidence and independence

I had an amazing time volunteering in Zanzibar, I learned a lot about conservation as well as local culture. There was a large variety of activities on offer, I particularly enjoyed scuba diving to help with the coral reef restoration, working in the local primary school and the cooking class. All the staff were friendly and helpful! I met so many incredible people and have taken a lot of new knowledge back home with me.
At the time the program was titled with a focus on turtle conservation but during my time I did not see any turtles or turtle eggs.

My experience was great because IVHQ offered me everything I needed, I felt safe, happy and useful. Tanzania just have my heart, I achieved my goal of helping others and being a tourist at the same time. It's worth it! I can't wait to volunteer again.

Since the moment you arrive you feel the love of local people and staff. They tell you every important detail so you can feel as a local person. You get attached to every single detail, its a wonderful experience!

Had the best experience with IVHQ. Felt very supported throughout the whole process. I had great support from when I first signed up to when I was finished and flying back home. Both the staff in New Zealand and those in Tanzania such as the coordinators, really made my experience great. I felt comfortable and safe at all times and extra help was always available if/when I needed it. There was a great balance between the volunteer work and social/recreational activities, plus I met the most amazing people.

I had such a great experience with IVHQ I spent 8 weeks in Tanzania and felt so supported with every step I took. Even after I came home the guide on adjusting back to ‘normal’ life was a really nice touch. I had fun on all the trips that I went on. I’ve had an unforgettable experience, all thanks to IVHQ.
The partnered team in Tanzania (THE) were amazing too.
Whilst I was in Tanzania I met Mariana who is amazing! She would listen to feedback but also chat to us as friends.
If you are thinking about it. Do it!

My volunteering experience in Zanzibar was beyond amazing. From the very start when I arrived in the camp I instantly found I was part of a family, everyone who worked their made sure your stay was at the highest level it could be and let me tell you it was so fun. With the volunteering itself, I loved how it was so broad and no day was the same as there were so many volunteering activities to choose. My personal favourite was the school, I loved working in the school and speaking with all the children and helping them when needed. I really recommend to volunteer abroad as it opens you up to new experiences and you can grow in confidence and independence

So for me to get from Calgary, Alberta, Canada to the Kilimanjaro airport in Tanzania, it cost about $2800 Canadian dollars through KLM.

Hi Eesha, As long as you travel with a parent, guardian or family member who is 18 years or over, you are eligible to participate on one of our programs! Why did you choose this program?

IVHQ had an excellent review on the internet as one of the most affordable Volunteer Abroad programs. Being a single mother and having the ambition to bond with each of my four children individually, I looked for something I could afford! I had one requirement, and that was being in a home stay so as not to be too crowded with the younger volunteers who are needing quiet space! They were excellent at making that happen!

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

IVHQ organizes every detail from your day to day routine, your job responsibilities, and your home stay. They have a very detailed website in all paper preparations, and all we needed to do was get our flights to match the dates we gave them. If you want to travel on weekends, they have discounted safe and organized visits for all their volunteers.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Traveling to another country usually means leaving your comfort zone. Store that away on a shelf and prepare yourself for an adventure! Let go of expectations, and embrace surprises, new flavors, new ways, and extraordinary bonding with people from all over the world! If you go with an open heart, this is a life experience that you will never forget and will bring you unconditional love!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The program is built on half day schedules. Depending on your energy, there is a host home to greet you with homemade food when you can rest and dream the afternoon away. Other volunteers energize each other, and next thing you know, you’re off trying food, or visiting lively markets, or shopping to bring your schools, orphanages, or aids program gifts to make their world a better place.

Weekends are full of adventures, visiting parts of the country with other volunteers all well and safely organized by IVHQ, or if you prefer, on your own!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

No matter how many countries I have traveled to, a new one is the unknown, and the greatest fear is safety. Tanzania was one incredibly welcoming country. The people there were kind and loving to us. We were respected for being volunteers and helping their community as much as we were respectful of their ways and customs, remembering we were guests in their lives.

What was it like volunteering in Tanzania?

If you’re prepared to let go of your western hot showers and indulgent rapid service, Tanzania is one of the most beautiful landscape and wildlife country you will ever visit! IVHQ made it so easy, and the prices from flights to Safari were so affordable because we were volunteers, and we filled our weekends with memorable adventures!

Our host mother Mama Liz was so thoughtful and attentive to every detail to each and every one under her care that we broke into tears saying goodbye after a month. It was truly one of the most memorable experiences for me and my son as we bonded working together in an orphanage and traveling around Tanzania with the many other volunteers we continue to be in touch with!

What is your role at IVHQ? What inspired you to join them?

Carol: I am the in-country Communications Manager for the IVHQ Tanzania program. This means that I am in charge of queries via email and phone from all our potential, current and future volunteers. I coordinate all volunteer logistics, run orientations, be the point of contact for all volunteers in country, etc.

My older brother participated in IVHQ's Tanzania program prior and then had the job that I have now and he inspired me to go and volunteer and see what the program was all about!

What do you enjoy most as far as your role?

Carol: I enjoy meeting people from all over the world! Each and every volunteer has something to contribute and a unique perspective. Watching them find a niche in a place that has become so important to me personally is a truly wonderful and rewarding experience.

What is your favorite story of a volunteer's experience with IVHQ in Tanzania?

Carol: One of my favorite stories about a volunteer happened a few months ago. A current placement that we send volunteers to was found by a volunteer. He was walking near his own placement one day and saw a sign for an orphanage that he was unfamiliar with. He went in and met the director and all of the children. This volunteer was inspired by the director and how hard he worked for these children and spoke to me about using it as a placement. He then motivated current volunteers to go check it out and to begin volunteering there! It's one of our farthest placements we have from our living accommodations but every volunteer that has been placed there just loves it. It's a special place and we're happy that our volunteer stumbled upon it.

What should every volunteer considering Tanzania know?

Carol: People in Tanzania are very friendly and welcoming. You will hear a 'Hello, how are you?' (in English or in Swahili) from a stranger much more often than you do back home. As a foreigner the local people are just as interested in you and your culture as you are interested in theirs. Don't be intimidated - just be friendly and give a friendly smile and a 'Hello' back- it will go a long way in getting to know new people!

What tips/insights do you have for first-time volunteers abroad?

Carol: For first-time volunteers my advice is simple: expect the unexpected! Going abroad to volunteer for the first time can be overwhelming- it's all part of the experience! Challenges equal rewards. We do our best to support all of our volunteers in-country and will never have you live or volunteer by yourself - you'll always be in good company. So just relax and take each day as it comes - you'll be challenged in many ways but learn, experience, and grow in such amazing and positive ways.
