I had thought about life in Japan for a couple of years before I finally decided to go there while on summer break form Uni. I remember I was a little bit too excited when I submitted my application.

I chose AIP mostly because other internship providers in Japan required you to be there for a specific start and end date which didn’t fit in with the allotted time given from my University.

My biggest regret was not taking the initiative to learn some of the Japanese language because I feel like I would have gotten a bit more of an immersive experience if I did. I was there for a grand total of six weeks before I even learned hello or thank you which I am pretty embarrassed about but realistically no one expected me to speak it.

When I stepped off the plane in Tokyo airport I was super nervous, I stayed in a hostel called Hop Step Inn for a few days while I looked for accommodation - a lovely hostel in a great location btw! I think this was one of my better ideas because I met some really nice backpackers from Germany!

I gotta admit that on my first day I was pretty nervous but I wasn't there a week before I felt completely relaxed. During my time there I created content for their blog and social media outlets and as one of the only native English speakers in the company I did a lot of proofreading and editing of the other staff’s work. I loved my work there and the staff are great people, I wasn’t expecting the responsibility of making my own promotional blog series so I was delighted with that. The other interns in the company who started a few weeks before me were some really lovely and helpful people!

Japan itself is an amazing place, the food was particularity amazing - my new obsession is jiggly cheese cake. The overall experience was well worth the trip!

What would you improve about this program?

I would like to see more information on the different packages prior to coming as I may have wanted to opt for a different package that included accommodation.

Half Thai and Half British, Simon enjoyed a fruitful career in Banking in the UK before deciding to migrate to Bangkok, Thailand to become a social entrepreneur. He previously spearheaded The Broadgate Financial Group’s renowned internship program before setting up AIP. AIP originally began as a concept to serve the growing demand of students seeking internship placements across Southeast Asia.

What is your favorite travel memory?

There isn't a favorite one as I consider all of them a favorite. However, if I had to choose a destination, it would be Singapore. It was a perfect blend of work and leisure against a backdrop of culture and ambition. I've never been to Singapore prior however I enjoyed my time because we have a head office there. I enjoy the orderliness of the country.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Our company is very focused on personal development and work-life balance. We encourage all employees to join on frequent team workouts which I do religiously. For me, I've changed my lifestyle to be healthier, and it has funneled through to my performance in my current position and has inspired the team to perform better in and out of the office.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Unfortunately, in my current role, I do not interact with students as much as I would like. However, I've heard some really amazing and truly inspiring stories from my colleagues – too many in fact that I can't share one for you. I can say the underlying tone has been the sincere joy I see in their faces whilst sharing these stories to me.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Such a tough question. I would go on all of them. If you ask me to choose one, though, I would go to Russia which is a program we are launching in 2019. I am super excited about this because it’s the first destination outside of our name sake "Asia" which reflects our global expansion initiative. I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome Russia into our Global Destinations Network.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

All the time. Honestly speaking, we find success in our failures. That’s unique especially for this team. We are such a dynamic and lean team where everyone gels really well together. Skill-sets are complimented, and ideas are challenged. In the face of adversity, we never rest on our laurels or give up. One word to surmise the uniqueness is perseverance.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

As above. Team work and company culture. Our leadership is collegial which is fundamental to running a value driven purpose led company. We continuously innovate the way we do things to improve productivity and to deliver an even better experience for our stakeholders. Our mission has always been to provide our applicants with flexible, personally customized placements, and top quality services at affordable prices.
