Super great awesome experience!

I attended Spanish courses with Instituto Hemingway for three months. First I took 6 weeks taking courses and then 2 weeks travelling around and finally a program working in a hotel as an intern. I was very impressed by the organization of the school and classes, the placement process for new students (a 10-minute chat, in Spanish, with a teacher who assesses at what level and in which class the student should be placed), the teachers' professionalism and the ambiance, which was casual but goal-oriented. I had a working knowledge of Spanish and was placed exactly where I needed to be to further my learning. That said, it is the total immersion that allowed me to gain and develop confidence in my speaking skills. I lodged with a local family where no one spoke any English, which meant that I would either sink or learn to swim - which is just what I did. I now speak Spanish fluently. Going to Instituto Hemingway was the best thing I could have done to achieve my goal.

What would you improve about this program?
I can't think of any areas for improvement. The registration process was very easy and the school's administrative staff was always very knowledgeable and helpful, both before my trip and on site.

I loved this internship so much...!!

I am currently a third-year under-graduated student from International Business and they helped me with searching for an internship with focus on my field.

Jose from Instituto Hemingway was so so wonderful in helping me to find a suitable placement!!! She went above and beyond to help me finding a placement which worked for me and I am so grateful!
Jose and his team are proactive and work extremely hard for you in order to help you find an internship that suits.

My weekly internshp class was everything I hoped it would be. I already have a strong Spanish foundation, and I wanted to brush up on my skills since I don't have opportunities to speak Spanish in my daily life.

What was your funniest moment?
Like so many people I have been quarantined and out of work due to the corona virus. I decided it would be a good idea to do something useful with this extra time and I knew just who to contact. About two years ago, I traveled to Spain to study at Hemingway for two weeks. It was an incredible, life changing experience. Thankfully, Jose offers internship placement. I decided to give them a try.

When Jose and I both 'woop wooped' because I finally used the past tense properly!!

Fantastic and superb experience!

I came into this program with no Spanish knowledge and in 2 weeks I find myself having a basic conversation with Instituto Hemingway teachers and locals of my project. The structure of the lessons means that you learn quickly but through conversation rather than a traditional classroom experience. They provide you supplies and the teachers are brilliant! They teach all classes in Spanish which makes the experience that much more authentic! I´m very thankful for having done these lessons and will continue to be fluently in a short time!

What would you improve about this program?
Since I had no Spanish speaking ability I wish I could have spent more time on survival Spanish phrases at the beginning of the program but nevermind I am ready to go so further as never imagined!

Mind-blowing experience

No doubt to take the programs from Instituto Hemingway, cause they have the most creative and motivated teachers you are going to have lessons with.
And of course as a foreigner you would love to have quality time with people around you and the activities that arranged and well planned for you. So which will give you the chance to keep so many good memories and experiences during your education with Instituto Hemingway and living in Spain. Culinary experience here with these guys was the best thing I did in my life honestly. It was such an amount of wonderful memories that I would need 2 lives to explain my wonderful time there.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My first day was my most nerve-racking moment. Moving into a home with a family that doesn't speak my native language. The sudden realization that I'm far away from home. It's a natural moment of nerves that quickly passes.

I really enjoyed cooking and learning in Spain

I chose Bilbao mainly because of the excitement of the unknown. Before this, I had never been so far away for such a long period of time. The farthest time zone I had been was three hours ahead, and so I decided to jump into an 18 hour change.

I have lived in a small town my entire life and Spain was the perfect way to open up and jump (quite possibly fall) out of my comfort zone. If beautiful nature isn't enough, I was lucky to find a program that fits my needs. The Uni gave me so many course options that fit requirements for my home university. This was really important in deciding where to go and, fortunately, it worked out well.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Though Spain is more famous for its red wine than white, the majority of its vineyards have white grapes and that was surprising for me.

Thumbs up for work and learn in Spain

I developed a lot of interpersonal skills and meet lots of wonderful people." First of all, I would like to say that it was truly an amazing opportunity. The conditions offered by the company were very good, the office is a modern place with a welcoming atmosphere. The team was very nice, mostly international people very kind. Everyone was sharing their culture, this way making the workplace more interesting.

The colleagues were super nice, I felt very accepted, and could always rely on them. The apartment they gave me was superb apartment, they also provided me with good food in the hotel.

It was my best internship experience so far, if I would have a possibility, I would definitely apply through your company again, thank you for everything

What was your funniest moment?
I was in Spanish class and made a confusion in class La and El in a serious discussion in Spanish class about the death penalty. Long story short do your best to use the right article for the given noun. La Pena de Muerte =Death penalty. El Pene De Muerte=The Penis of Death.

cooking and learning in Spain

The program was well put together including lectures in the kitchen, daily cooking lessons and a variety of field trips to learn about the food and culture.

Living in an apartment in Northern Spain made me feel like I was home. Walking all over the city and shopping at the food markets gave me the sense that I was a local. I only wish I could have stayed longer. I learned almost everything about Spanish cuisine but also about culture. Jose, the Director of the program, is a wonderful person and is always there to give you a hand. He and his colleagues will give you nice tips about life in Spain.

I learned the value of being more active as we had to walk everywhere and how to appreciate my surroundings. It was totally the best experience ever. I think anyone who can figure out a way to finance a study abroad trip should absolutely do it!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Do you know a young Spaniard studying abroad? Do you want to make them happy? Buy a bag of sunflower seeds (we call them pipas), then observe their amazing skills at eating the seed but not the shell, and how quickly they do it. If you start practising now, in one year you could be as good at eating pipas as any Spanish teenager!

Amazing experience in my favourite country!

Once I stepped foot in Spain, all bets were off, I was too excited not to succeed.

I started to realize all the reasons why I decided to come on this adventure were starting to play out, and I became enthralled on the experiences that I was gaining. I ended up getting a teaching job working Mondays Tuesdays and Wednesdays, then teaching private lessons on Thursdays and Fridays. It was a nice way to mix up the schedule. I moved to Spain with everything organized, job, accommodation, airport transfer and some weeks of Spanish courses to be inmersed in the new culture and language; but the School more than adequately helped me prepare properly and I built a successful life in no time. All in all my trip was amazing and was loaded with great experiences. Upon returning home to California, both sad to leave and happy to reunite with my friends and family, I found myself to be far more resourceful than ever before. I also found myself reassured with confidence, fulfilled with experience, and ready for whatever challenges lay ahead of me

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Like barnacles, baby eels are another expensive delicacy. Though they look like spaghetti, they’re actually skinned baby eels. We fry them with garlic, salt, and chili, and them eat them while they’re still hot. If you can’t afford the real angulas, go for gulas, a cheaper fake version (made out of surimi). It’s delicious as well!
