AIP

My experience with the Asia Internship Program had many high points, particularly through the company I was matched with. I was placed in a company that aligned with my interests and allowed me to grow through hands-on work in a supportive and communicative team. The location was convenient, and I felt genuinely cared for during my time there.

AIP provided some strong support, specifically through their on-the-ground community team, who was responsive and helpful. Their platform was easy to navigate, and they found comfortable housing, which made the transition smoother. The availability of 24/7 support provided some peace of mind during the transition abroad.

That said, for me, a challenge was pre-departure communication. At times, I felt I had to chase information just to stay on track, and it wasn’t always clear what stage I was in or what was expected of me. Having a lack of information that ensured security created unnecessary stress before the internship began.

During the internship, I would have appreciated more consistent community engagement, such as biweekly events or cultural outings to help interns connect with each other and their host country. While events were occasionally mentioned, there weren’t consistent opportunities organized for interns to connect, and much of the social interaction had to be self-organized.

To AIP’s credit, I did feel they genuinely cared about my experience and responded when feedback was given. With clearer communication and more structured community-building, AIP could greatly enhance an already valuable program.

Escaplan, a company where hard work meets daily fun

The people I worked with at Escaplan made this experience unique. If I compare myself the fiorst day I walked in to the person I am now, I would say that there has been a great improvement. The fact that we all come from different backgrounds but still understand each other and work as 1 team is one of the most beautiful characteristics I discovered during my internship. Before I started this internship I wanted to work with a diverse team and now I know that it is definitely something I feel good about.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would definitely go with the flow and take my time to adjust. This experience is a life changing experience but a challenge at the same time. Being far away from your family in a foreign culture where English is not their first language is hard but not impossible. The people at the company are always there to guide you during your internship but also with your challenges outside the office. Once you make that good connection with someone that you feel you can trust, it becomes a new experience.
Pros
  • Quick responses
  • Never leave you in the dark, always update you
  • they take care of you even after you get accepted into a company
Cons
  • No cons

Grateful for an amazing journey with AIP

My internship experience in Thailand with AIP was nothing short of amazing. From the very beginning, the entire process was smooth and well-organized, making it easy to focus on gaining valuable experience. The AIP team was always friendly, supportive, and ready to help whenever I had questions. What stood out the most was the sense of community — I felt like I became part of a vibrant international network of interns and professionals. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and highly recommend AIP to anyone looking for an enriching and memorable internship experience.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have simply stayed longer if I could. AIP and my company made me feel very welcome and I loved living in Thailand given its people, its food, its culture, and its nature.
Pros
  • Variety of internships
  • Smooth process
  • Supportive and helpful service

AIP is a complete nightmare!

This company is a complete nightmare! They cost me thousands! I have just returned from a 6 week internship in Bangkok with this company. From start to finish, I was provided with no support. Once you pay this company, they don’t bother with you at all! I feel they are a scam!

Airport pick-up means that they book you a taxi, who you need to get into contact with to meet you. There is nobody there on arrival to settle you in.

I was under the impression that I would be living with other interns. This is not the case. The accommodation I had payed for was a hostel, down an alleyway. I was greeted at the ‘reception’ of the hostel by a group of men, all interested in where I was from, and how long I was staying. Although I appreciate the culture is different (I am British), and I stand out in an Asian country, this made me feel uncomfortable. I was followed up to my room by two of the men, who watched me type the code to my room. I don’t blame AIP for this situation, however the way they handled it was appalling. I sent multiple messages to my mentors, clearly upset, they were slow to respond, and didn’t seem to care (yet they were actively responding on the group chat with other interns). I did not feel safe at all staying in this accommodation, and so I left. They didn’t once offer to help me find another place to stay, in fact they didn’t even ask me where I was staying, the whole 6 weeks. They are not ‘there to look out for you’. I was given $200 refund for the hostel, which was a fraction of what I had payed them to provide me with accommodation. I then had to pay for 6 weeks in a hotel out of my own pocket. This company cost me thousands!

On a positive note, the company I was interning for were amazing! The owner had told me that the previous intern had similar issues with AIP, and had also complained about them. My internship company toured me round other hotels, and also tried to reach out to AIP on my behalf, they outdid themselves with kindness, and turned my 6 weeks into an amazing experience. But having been told by my boss that the previous intern also had big issues with AIP, I really think my negative experience was not just an anomaly.

They promise group dinners and activities. I was there for 6 weeks, and didn’t meet a single other intern. I was once given the contact to another intern and told to contact them myself. I was only taken out for dinner once (on my third day there) with my ‘mentors’, after writing a formal email comparing about the lack of support I had been given. I also never got a response from anybody about the email I sent whilst I was out there.

I don’t have a single positive thing to say about AIP. My time in Bangkok turned out to be a great experience, and I would highly recommend interning abroad, but do not do it through AIP!

AIP Thailand Winter Internship

Great experience and AIP was extremely helpful in ensuring our safety and welfare. They go beyond office hours to ensure that the interns are coping and managing well in a foreign country. It has been a wonderful experience thanks to the great AIP team that made this expensive an unforgettable one. The service they provided was also extremely fast and prompt, they make sure all problems are solved almost instantaneously. Most importantly, they make sure that the intern feels safe and very welcomed.

Too high expectations

I did 3 months internship in software development as a recent graduate (not a student anymore). I got myself the cheapest package (which is already expensive if you are not from a rich family) but you can get some entrance discount and also there was a discount if you pay the deposit within 24 hours after being accepted (I needed to ask for the discount, they didn't give it automatically).

AIP found a company that exactly matched my requirements. A small company (around 10 people) near the center of Bangkok. The interview was very easy, and both sides accepted each other right away.

After paying the final price, I got all the necessary documents for the visa - this was quite complicated as different people from AIP said different information about applying for the visa. I had plenty of time, and I successfully got my internship visa for 90 days in 3 weeks.

Everyone in AIP was very nice and helpful, but sometimes it took them too long to reply - or I had to send more messages/emails to get the answers. During my time there, we had a WhatsApp group, and they helped me with many things, even not related to the internship.

If you go through everything on their webpage or social media, you might get too high expectations and be prepared that you might end up as disappointed as me. All the hype - that you will find their friends, contacts, and companies might offer you to stay working full-time -> you will need to be very lucky to achieve that. Especially in programming branches. I've found out that it is very common for programmers who are very quiet, introverted, and normally don't talk at work place together. In the office where I did the internship, people usually didn't say "hi" when entering. They just walked in, changed shoes, sat at the desk with a computer, and worked until lunchtime. During lunchtime, most of them were playing on their phones, and they didn't discuss something about their not-work-related activities or anything. After lunch, again, just quietly work till the end of the work day - actually usually even longer. Of course, they were helpful if I asked for help. Someone always helped me and explained the possible solutions to my problem.
I gained some work experience but not friends or some nice memories (related to work place and my colleagues).
After a week of coming back home, I felt like nothing like that ever happened.

But to rate AIP - they did a good job, they also tried to encourage me when I was feeling too lonely, they bought me a cake for my birthday and we went for karaoke together. Without them, I won't be able to find a good company and get a visa. But I will take one star off the rating for setting my expectations too high (ending up so disappointed), the chaos about visas, and forgetting to respond to my messages from time to time.

Pros
  • Help with getting visa
  • Finding suitable position
  • Help to get use to the city
Cons
  • Setting high expectations

Had a blast in Bangkok!

AIP facilitated and helped me secure a 5-week internship in Bangkok. It has been an eye-opening experience to work overseas and immerse myself in Thai culture. AIP helped with my visa application, company interview and gave great and affordable accommodation recommendations that allowed me to experience local life.

Thanks to Nisha, Kate and Herlyn for the onsite support, and for arranging bonding sessions with the other interns! Highly recommend to anyone looking for overseas exposure or internships :)
