Great Place to Learn Chinese

I am currently studying Chinese at this academy and I am very satisfied with my experience. The student books are very well structured, clear, and easy to follow, which helps a lot when learning Chinese step by step.

The classes are very good and well organized. Each lesson combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing, so you can really feel your progress over time. The pace is appropriate and the explanations are clear, even for beginners.

The teacher is very nice, patient, and professional. She always encourages students to speak Chinese, corrects mistakes in a supportive way, and makes the class enjoyable and motivating.

I would definitely recommend this academy to anyone who wants to learn Chinese in a serious but friendly learning environment.

Once bitten always a student

Basically I'm a returning student at Silk Mandarin Shanghai. Been with them for a significant part of the past 1 year and am currently on my second stint with the school. Long story short, this is one of the best places to learn Chinese in Shanghai.

When I first came to Shanghai and looking for a good school to learn Chinese, I was unsurprisingly overwhelmed due to the innumerable number of options available in the city. After having read through reviews and comments online, I came up with a top three shortlist, then attended trial classes with each of them and in the end, quite easily decided to go with Silk Mandarin.

What made this decision-making easy for me initially, was their unique (but very logical) Slow Motion Technique which I find is very practical and completely simplifies and rationalizes the process of understanding and mastering the unique and often-times, confusing grammar rules of Mandarin.

The other reason why I decided to signup with the school was the friendly and approachable support staff and teachers. As I needed a visa to study in Shanghai, the support given was very enthusiastic, detailed and thorough (Coco and her team, especially deserving mention here!). Their teachers are also very grounded and good at basically, making the technical process of learning Mandarin very accessible and easy to follow. A big thank you to teachers Nina, Bella, Nini, Catherine and Echo for making my Mandarin learning journey so far, less complicated (than necessary), exciting and fulfilling. I felt like I have come so far, yet there's still loads to learn and improve so Silk Mandarin, I feel like I'm going to be an eternal student here :-)

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?

Structured and supportive path to master Mandarine

Before joining Silk Mandarin, my Chinese learning was quite unstructured. My biggest pain point was definitely pronunciation. It felt overwhelming and I wasn't sure if I was even getting close to the correct sounds. I knew it was important, but I didn't have a clear system to master it.

I chose Silk Mandarin because of their professional reputation. From the first inquiry, their approach seemed structured and supportive. They finally helped me understand that learning correct pronunciation from the start is inevitable for real progress. The school, and my teacher Evelyn in particular, are amazing. They have the perfect combination of professionalism and personal touch, adjusting each lesson to my specific pace and knowledge. We dedicate time to practice exactly the things I am unsure about, which is incredibly efficient.

What surprised me most was the richness of their learning methodology and aids (pdfs, repetitions, preview and review videos and so much more). The amount of materials and support is outstanding. Teachers always offer extra time to review or clarify concepts if needed.

Overall, it has been a perfect experience for my needs. The classes created a cycle. I was able to understand better, apply new knowledge, and then ask questions to reinforce my learning

Fun learning Mandarin

I have started my Mandarin course in october this year with Nina laoshi and and truely enjoying it. She is able to keep motivation high and learning is super fun with her. Very much appreciated is the teaching method. It really meets my learning style. I will definitely be continuing with HSK2.

Nina uses a blended teaching style.she focuses on conversation and free speech but implementing foundational grammar and pronunciation. The courses are build very logical and follow a clear path. Very structured.

Strong foundation and dedicated team

The school has admirable organization: everything is very well structured, and you can see the work of a committed team that is always willing to answer any questions with kindness and efficiency. That is something I truly appreciate.

The study materials, especially the video lessons, are of excellent quality. They are professional, clear, and very helpful for reinforcing each lesson. The program as a whole is well systematized and feels thoughtfully designed to help students progress at a good pace.

From my personal experience, I did feel that the method can be a bit intensive, as the course moves through one lesson per class and most of the reviewing depends on the student. Although there are practice activities, they often focus on completing exercises rather than revisiting explanations in depth. I believe the program could be even more enriching if each lesson included two classes: one to learn the content and another to reinforce it together with the teacher. I'm sure this would help clarify those small doubts that sometimes remain, even when studying on your own.

Overall, it is a very good program, with solid foundations and a team that truly cares about their students’ learning. My experience has been positive, and I am grateful for the effort and the human warmth they show in every class.

Thanks to Silk Mandarin

I have been taking classes at Silk Mandarin and I am extremely satisfied. My teacher is fantastic—she is not only knowledgeable but also incredibly patient and encouraging, which makes every lesson enjoyable. What truly sets Silk Mandarin apart is their well-structured platform and adult-learning-focused methodology. They understand exactly how adults learn a language effectively, breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts. The materials are practical, engaging, and tailored to real-life situations. I highly recommend Silk Mandarin to any serious learner looking for a systematic and supportive environment to master Chinese.

Fast way to learn chinese

The course is well-organized and focuses on daily topics. I think the course is the most suitable for people who need Chinese for practical reasons (work, living in China). I also like that sometimes teachers add cultural notes (e.g. if you use this word is more casual, this one sounds a bit rude here etc). Finally, other students are interesting, so the class becomes a nice socialisation spot as well. After a class I asked our teacher for some recommendations and she gave me good ones. Certainly recommend.

What would you improve about this program?
I would make a 2-3 classes course for people who want to solidify knowledge after a course (practice)
Pros
  • Good quality
  • Flexible
Cons
  • One location for classes in Shanghai
