Great School to improve your Chinese

Silkmandarin was a great choice to improve my Chinese. I was able to start at my specific level (after an online test and a meet-up with one of the teachers), as they offered review classes. Also, they offer a special Hanzi course to catch up with all the Characters, so I could be ready to start HSK3.

The teachers are all very nice and helpful, and they listen to my feedback.

The school also offers social events, where you can meet new people and practise your Chinese:)

I cannot give any feedback on the housing, as this was not relevant to me.

My Experience Learning Mandarin at Silk Mandarin, Suzhou

Before joining Silk Mandarin, learning Chinese felt overwhelming. I had tried studying on my own and even used a few apps, but progress was slow and inconsistent. I struggled with remembering characters, understanding tones, and most of all, feeling confident using Mandarin in real-life situations. It was frustrating because I truly wanted to learn, but I didn’t know how to move forward effectively.

I chose Silk Mandarin after doing some research and reading positive reviews online. What really convinced me was their unique teaching method “the Slow Motion Technique” which promised to simplify the language in a way that made sense. I also appreciated that they focused on practical speaking skills, not just textbook grammar. The fact that the school is based in Suzhou, where I live, made it convenient and accessible.

Since starting classes, my learning journey has completely changed. For the first time, I feel like I’m building a solid foundation. The Slow Motion Technique helped me understand sentence structure and grammar patterns clearly and visually. Their Magical Talking Cards turned memorizing vocabulary and sentence building into something fun and interactive. I find myself remembering things more easily and actually using them in conversation with locals.

What surprised me the most was how much I enjoy going to class. The teachers are incredibly supportive and passionate, and they create a warm, encouraging environment.

Overall, Silk Mandarin has made Mandarin feel not just learnable but also enjoyable. I’m finally making real progress, and I’m excited to keep learning.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was nervous about getting the tones wrong or freezing up mid-sentence. But my teacher was incredibly patient and supportive, gently guiding me when I struggled and helping me build each sentence step by step. Thanks to the Slow Motion Technique, I could visualize the sentence structure in my mind, and that helped me push through.

My Chinese learning experience:

Overall, my experience with Silk Mandarin has been very positive.
I took the intensive course and had two main teachers — Jane and Nina — both of whom were very competent, professional, and supportive throughout. They each brought their own strengths to the classroom, and I always felt guided and encouraged in the learning process. Even for someone like me who started from zero, Silk Mandarin provides a solid and effective foundation for learning Chinese.

What I especially appreciated:
The classes are well-structured, and you can tell there’s a thoughtful teaching method behind everything — particularly the Slow Motion Technique, which helps break down complex sentence patterns in a way that makes them easier to grasp.

A small point of critique:
The set learning pace is great for keeping progress consistent, but at times it felt a bit inflexible — especially when other responsibilities made it hard to keep up. Some more flexibility in the schedule would be helpful for students with busier lives.

Another area worth mentioning:
In my experience, the organizational side of things could be a bit chaotic. It didn’t impact the quality of the teaching, but better communication and clearer processes from the admin team would have improved the overall experience.

In conclusion:
Despite these minor issues, I’m still very happy with my learning journey at Silk Mandarin. It’s a great school with a strong concept, dedicated teachers, and a real potential to help students succeed in learning Chinese.

Experience

This was my first time joining this two-week summer camp, and I had a truly wonderful and enriching experience. I came in with the hope of improving my Chinese language skills and left not only with more confidence in speaking but also with great memories, new friends, and a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture.

The classroom experience was one of the highlights of the program. The teacher was very supportive, friendly, and always willing to help. This made the learning environment feel relaxed yet effective. Even though learning a new language can sometimes be intimidating, the teacher's approach made it fun and approachable. The classes were well-structured and focused on practical communication skills, which helped me improve my Chinese in just a short time. I noticed real progress, especially in listening and speaking.

In the afternoons, we participated in a wide variety of cultural activities. These included exploring famous landmarks, playing traditional games like mahjong, and experiencing local food. These activities weren’t just fun—they also provided the chance to use Chinese in real-life situations. For example, ordering food at local restaurants or asking for directions gave us the opportunity to apply what we learned in class in a natural setting. This hands-on practice helped me gain more confidence and made the learning process feel much more meaningful.

Another great aspect of the camp was the opportunity to immerse ourselves in Chinese culture. From visiting historical sites to learning about daily life traditions, I felt that I gained a deeper cultural understanding beyond just the language. This cultural exposure is something you can’t easily get from textbooks or online classes.

That said, like any program, there are a few areas that could be improved. The schedule was quite packed, so there wasn’t a lot of downtime for rest or personal exploration. Some students, especially beginners, may also find it challenging to keep up if the group includes people with mixed skill levels. In a few cases, I wished there was more support in English for instructions or clarification during activities. While the camp was well-organized overall, the pace and intensity might not suit everyone.

Despite these minor challenges, I would still highly recommend this camp to anyone who is interested in learning Chinese and experiencing the culture firsthand. Whether you're a beginner or someone looking to improve your existing skills, this camp offers a unique blend of language learning and cultural immersion that is both fun and effective.

I came in not knowing what to expect, and I’m leaving with improved language skills, greater confidence, and memories I’ll cherish. This camp is a great choice for anyone looking to learn, grow, and explore—all while having a great time.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would change the activities of the cooking dumplings to wear traditional chinese clothes hanfu.

They are good

The way they approach you is really good and beyond the materials their blending system is awesome. I strongly suggest them. They arrange a lot of events, also if you face any problem for example about housing or travelling etc they genuinely help a lot. I started the course from the belowest point lets say, I was just like 你好,谢谢 and now can read news in Chinese in 1 year. Moreover, they accept critics and if there is an error about sth like about your program, schedule whatever you can imagine they are reacting in a good way. I changed my time period for several times because of some neccesities.

Excellent methodology

I am a Brazilian living in Shanghai and trying to learn mandarin for some time without progress. Then, I found Silk Mandarin and now I am at the right path. The blended course has an excellent methodology: you study by yourself before classes and review after them. The online classes presentend by Jasmine are very educative and my teacher, Hanna, is very well prepared. I think the best way to learn chinese is through repetition and Silk Mandarin's program is designed to offer lots of repetion and exercises until you can really learn.

Great teaching quality for any level!

Currently working in Shanghai for a Chinese company, I’ve decided to sign up at Silk Mandarin after comparing several institutes. I have no regret with my decision as the follow-up at this school is great. The teaching tools are created by the school, and everything is really well organised. I am having group classes with teacher Jane for my HSK1 and HSK2. Really happy with the overall learning experience. I strongly recommend SilkMandarin for anyone who wishes to learn Chinese, whatever your level.

Brilliant institution to reliably learn chinese

I've really enjoyed my time with Silk Mandarin and plan to continue my Chinese learning journey with them to reach HSK Level 2. I chose them due to the teacher profiles and the wonderful location, which is central and appropriate. I constantly use what ive learned, many thanks to the slow motion technique of memorising what comes first and what to describe after. I find myself only thinking and speaking in Chinese most of the time.

Essentially I'm a lot more confident due to understanding my own level of expertise and fluency, and what and how to improve. It's thanks to the wonderful teachers and support at Silk Mandarin.
