Internship Abroad HQ

My internship at Metropolitan General Hospital in Athens was truly an unforgettable experience. I had the rare opportunity to observe numerous surgeries across various specialties, including cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurological, and plastic surgery. Being able to witness such a wide range of procedures gave me valuable insight into medical practices that I wouldn’t typically have access to in the U.S.

Beyond the hospital, I was able to explore the beautiful country of Greece, meet incredible new friends from around the world, and immerse myself in a different culture. The connections I made—both professionally and personally—were incredibly meaningful, and this experience has greatly expanded my perspective on healthcare and global medicine.

Overall, this internship not only enriched my medical knowledge but also gave me memories and relationships I’ll cherish for a lifetime.

What was your funniest moment?
Meeting new friends building new relationships and traveling greece.
Pros
  • Fun people
  • Good Food
  • Awesome Hospital
Cons
  • Metro Transportation
  • Bugs
  • Heat in summer

Thessaloniki drone internship

Intern Abroad HQ and Circa Abroad did a really good job with coordination and making sure I felt safe. Intern abroad HQ, however, I feel, did not advertise the actual content of the internship very well. I was under the impression that I would mostly be working with your own hardware and learn things about aerodynamics and mechanics, while in actuality, I mostly had experience during this in software-based programs. I would recommend interning in Thessaloniki, because it is a beautiful city, very walkable, and somewhat tight-knit.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I didn't end up getting to the beaches near Thessaloniki, so I kind of regret that, but even so I had a wonderful time.
Pros
  • Increased tech literacy especially with Windows systems
  • The city is very clean
  • There are many archaeological sites that you can explore
Cons
  • Everything with the buses is integrated into Google maps except for the times at which they get to each stop
  • There was not a great deal of communication between our internship supervisors and us for projects we are working on
  • You either had to order online or go into the city for abundant food

Intern abroad hq is a fantastic organization!

Intern Abroad HQ is a fantastic organization if you are looking for a program abroad to observe what you love! I went to Valencia Spain for two weeks observing in a physiotherapy clinic. Intern Abroad HQ made the whole process easy to complete and gave me tons of support the whole way from beginning to end. Everyone was so kind and had answers to all my questions. They were incredibly organized and kept me in line with all that I needed to do on my end. They provided me a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice would be to take a deep breath and take it all in. If it's your first time traveling alone, it can be scary but this organization has provided you so much support that you can trust that you are in safe hands. This is an experience you'll never forget so try to take it all in and really savor your time abroad, it will change you for the better!
Pros
  • The process of paperwork and leading up to the trip is very straightforward, this organization is very organized and has thought of everything.
  • You get to explore a new place and meet people of all different cultures!
  • You are gaining valuable knowledge from your placement that will not only look great on resumes but also prepare you to be the best you can be at the job you have ahead.

Remote internship for dolphin conservation

My remote internship was a highly valuable and enriching experience that allowed me to contribute meaningfully to bottlenose dolphin research. My supervisor was incredibly supportive, patient, and provided clear, constructive guidance throughout the project. The structured workflow and consistent feedback helped me stay engaged and feel like an integral part of the team, despite working remotely. This experience not only enhanced my technical skills—particularly in data analysis and research methods—but also deepened my understanding of how impactful conservation work can be. It has inspired me to continue developing in this field and to actively seek opportunities where I can contribute to wildlife conservation efforts.

GO GREEK! Thessaloniki Experience

I was contacted well before my internship date by my Greek contacts, who spent a lot of time getting me acquainted with where to go and how to get around. The accommodations were cozy, and everything was within walking and bus-riding distance. I had a great time and I learned a lot about the Greek culture. Everyone was warm and welcoming. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was due to a bit of confusion as to where I would do observations/shadowing. Papageorgiou Hospital experience was definitely unique. Lunch advice: eat at the hospital cafeteria! The food is AMAZING! (Also, interns and staff get a discount.)

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I didn't see them, but I HEARD the protests about the university students who were involved in the fatal train crash.
Pros
  • Thessaloniki is beautiful.
  • Everything is walkable. People are welcoming.
  • Food is DELICIOUS!
Cons
  • Slightly disorganized at the hospital/internship site.

What is your favorite travel memory?

After graduating from university, I made the decision to move to the UK and ended up living in London for 5 years. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made! London is such a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, and being so close to other European countries, the world really was my oyster. Coming from such a small country like New Zealand opened my eyes to so many different cultures and ways of living. I was pushed out of my comfort zone, forced to make new friends, travel the world, become more independent, and adapt to a whole new way of living. I made so many great memories and will forever treasure my time spent there.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Intern Abroad HQ has always been an environment that fosters creativity, teamwork, and new ideas. A company is only as good as the people it employs, so to be around colleagues that really believe in the work that they do, has only motivated me to be my best, not only professionally but personally too! Speaking to so many interns day to day has made me so much more confident and compassionate. I feel secure in voicing my ideas, troubleshooting problems, and contributing to overall company success.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

The feedback I receive from returned students is almost always related to their increased sense of self. Traveling abroad, being pushed out of your comfort zone, and trying something new force you to put a lot of faith in yourself and your abilities. Each participant's experience is different, with the highs and lows teaching valuable lessons about one's strengths and weaknesses. For many, completing an internship reinforces passions, hobbies, interests, and career paths. For others, it reinvigorates a love of language, art, or travel. Whatever the outcome, the opportunity to travel abroad expands perspectives, leaving you more culturally and self-aware.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

For me, I'd love to participate in one of the Social Work & Community Outreach Internships in Arusha, Tanzania. Interns can be placed in NGOs, rehabilitation centers, charities, and with community programs that provide assistance to address specific social issues such as alcohol and drug abuse, domestic abuse, youth pregnancy, and unemployment. Interns can help to improve access to vital healthcare services. Tanzania is such a beautiful country, so to be able to explore world-famous natural landscapes, all while giving back to the communities that make it so special, would be amazing.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Intern Abroad HQ has come a long way since its establishment in 2017. In just 6 short years, we have established over 240 internship programs in 22 countries, and it all comes down to the hard work and dedication of those behind the scenes. Our office is full of young professionals who understand the struggle of landing that first job with little to no experience. The ability to relate to our interns, their struggles, and their motivation allows us to reflect more critically on programs and how we can provide the best service possible. We take pride in our programs and respect that people travel from all over the world, investing their time, resources, and energy into them. We take feedback seriously and continuously reflect on how we can improve our services to foster successful and positive experiences.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Motivation and enjoying the work you are doing. You have to believe you are making a difference and surround yourself with a team that shares the same goals, values, and objectives for success. Having a shared purpose gives employees something to work towards while also letting customers know what they stand for. At Intern Abroad HQ, we truly believe that an internship is an amazing way to gain practical experience and bolster your resume. Choosing an internship abroad or an international remote internship offers the additional benefits of gaining overseas work experience and broader cultural immersion, both of which will help you stand out to future employers. We track our success by the feedback and reviews our interns give us, so we’re motivated to ensure you have an unbeatable internship experience.
