Positive, Incredible Experience

Choosing to take the TEFL Heaven training course was one of the best decisions I could have made. Not only did we get to do our training on the beautiful island of Koh Chang and meet about 20 other awesome fellow teachers and now friends in Thailand, but TEFL Heaven did an excellent job placing us at fitting and awesome schools around Thailand for when we finished the training course.

The training course was so useful, and the in-person training really helped us to practice our teaching skills before we even stepped in foot in the classroom. It helped me feel very confident when I finally did teach my first class.

I've now been teaching in Thailand for about a year, and it's very comforting to know that even now TEFL Heaven is a great resource if I experience any issues here while I am still in Thailand or if hope to look for a job in another country in the future.

One of the best parts about the course was all the connections and friendships I have made with fellow TEFL heaven-ers.

What would you improve about this program?
During our program in Koh Chang, we volunteered at a Cambodian refugee camp on the island to practice our teaching skills at the end of our 3 week course. This was one of my absolute favorite day of the program. One suggestion I have would be to have the trainees to volunteer teach twice- once at the very beginning of the course and once at the end. This could help to show how much progress the teachers have made throughout the training.

I felt prepared to teach

The best thing about this course is definitely the practical element. We had seven teaching practice's altogether - with both classmates and Vietnamese students. Being someone that does not like public speaking, this was extremely nerve racking at first. However, after seven teaching practices, with feedback, i felt ready and prepared to teach. It was especially helpful and also interesting to have the opportunity to teach a range of ages during the time on the course.

What would you improve about this program?
The lessons delivered to us seemed to focus a lot on getting us - the students, up in front of the class speaking, a lot of the time this was about irrelevant topics (just for fun). At the beginning of the course this made sense, it was all about bringing people out of the shells, becoming both confident within the class and also in speaking in front of a class too. I think this was good. However after two weeks we were still doing this, i understand the presentation element is extremely vital whilst teaching but if we were still to spend a lot of time presenting to the class - i think there could of been more focus on important topics (towards the end of the course) Grammar was skimmed over so fast, we were told to google on our phones the definitions and then copy eachother (into our books) - no one actually came out of the lesson with any understanding. Whilst i like that the course isn't grammar heavy and i do agree that amount of information is hard to retain - you would have to recap before a class anyway. I think that if we were spending time presenting to the group anyway we might as well of presented something useful i.e grammar - just for one session. Another thing that was skimmed over was the essays - i know a lot of English people on the course hadn't ever written an essay/hadn't written one in years and really struggled with it. Let alone the foreign students. That's another thing we could have spent a bit of time discussing/presenting. To sum up, i like the fun aspect but it could be better balanced - we seemed to cover quite a bit of irrelevant stuff and a lot of important things were barely covered.

Incredible Program in an Incredible Location

I could not have chosen a better way to begin my experience teaching in Thailand than to train with the TEFL Heaven program. The program's aim was to give us the tools that we would need as certified TEFL teachers, then to assist us in finding an agency to provide us with a teaching position. The program did all this and more. My experience in Thailand was shaped by the way that TEFL Heaven welcomed me to this beautiful country. Prior to beginning the course, the company itself made my preparation and arrival easier than I had imagined. There was always someone to contact to answer any questions and clear up any confusion. In regards to visas and travel documents, assistance and guidance were always readily available. The training course itself was an enlightening experience and beneficial in that it provided me with the tools I needed to be the best TEFL teacher I could be. We were taught not only teaching skills that could prepare you for any situation, but also how to acclimate to a new life in a new culture. It helped that while gaining the knowledge needed to teach in a foreign country, we were living on a breathtaking island in a bungalow, fully immersing ourselves in our new home. Taking on a new job in a new environment can be daunting, but TEFL Heaven made sure that we were comfortable, providing any tools necessary and made it an overall enjoyable experience.

Vietnam TESOL

A very rewarding experience with hands on teaching, lesson planning and a job guaranteed shorty after the end of the course. Some improvements to the group exercises would be great but all in all i would recommend it to any first time teachers looking to get their foot in the door.

Since the course has finished i have 2 part time jobs making up a steady wage so have decided to stay living in Ho Chi Minh City but there is opportunities to find work in all parts of Vietnam which is very temping as the hussle and bussle of the town is something very different to England and to some of the more scenic parts of the country.

What would you improve about this program?
Better group activities and more discussion about the essays.

Great time with TEFL Heaven - Koh Chang

I thoroughly enjoyed my three week program with TEFL Heaven! They ensured my pre-planning was as painless as possible and helped me so much once I was in Thailand. The course was fun and insightful, and I can honestly say after teaching for 2 months that the experience on my feet with TEFL Heaven was invaluable. They help you prepare for being up in front of a class. Obviously there is a lot to learn in 3 weeks, but they structure the program so that nights and weekends are often free to explore or relax. Koh Chang was gorgeous and I'll never forget my time in the program. The people I met became family and I'm glad to have a network throughout Thailand as support and company!

What would you improve about this program?
I personally have to structure my own curriculum and create tests at my school. This is not common of all Thai schools, but I would have loved some more guidance in that way. TEFL Heaven does teach you plenty about structuring lessons, which is hugely helpful!

A Fantastic Experience All Around

This program is an absolutely amazing experience! Puerto Vallarta (PV) is a beautiful city with a rich cultural heritage that the people take advantage of.
First, the down sides (depending on your point of view). In some ways PV is akin to visiting the United States or Great Britain. It can be a bit more expensive than most of the rest of Mexico (especially if you're limited to visiting stores where the associates only speak English). In some ways, parts of the city are comparable to Disney World (according to my room mate when I was on the program). Finding inexpensive non-Mexican food is not easy to do.
Then again, you're not going to Mexico to eat expensive French food - you're there to experience the culture, the food, the life. The people are incredibly friendly, especially if you even try to speak a little Spanish to them (a simple "hola" and "Buenos dias" go a long way). The local food is fantastic, and you can get the best tacos I've ever had for about 12 pesos apiece (~0.75 USD). And that brings to mind the issue of money: "expensive" is all relative, and even in PV "expensive" is nothing compared to the United States or Europe (that said, it's easy to forget how much money you're spending in pesos).
The course itself was fantastic. Raul, the Academic Director, has been teaching ESL for about a decade and a half, and he's got stories you wouldn't believe. He's a great teacher. They've recently changed the TEFL books to make them even better. The owner, Alan, is very helpful and was able to assist me in finding employment; he has contacts everywhere in Mexico, and many overseas.

What would you improve about this program?
The biggest concern I have wth the program in Puerto Vallarta is how stunningly successful it is. As a result of its success it seems like sometimes the staff has too many irons in the fire and things can slip through the cracks. Short-term concerns are absolutely no problem, but longer-term goals can be forgotten if you don't remind the staff now and again. Is this a major problem? No. But it is something to be aware of.

Great in-class practice, fun course, and local location

Overall, I got what I was hoping to get out of this course! The skills they taught were relevant, and I felt very prepared going into my first teaching job after completing the course. I also liked how much teaching practice you get throughout the month. It was very helpful and practical for hands on learning! Additionally, I enjoyed living in the place I would be teaching while studying my TEFL. It gave me a chance to adjust and get comfortable in my new setting while surrounded by like-minded people.

What would you improve about this program?
I do think the school could improve on their job search assistance. They did provide me with a job, but it was poorly paid and wayyyy out of the city centre. I was not happy with this option, but in their minds, their job was done because they had found me a job. I continued my search and found something I was happy with by myself.

Come to Vietnam for the course, stay for the people, food and scenery.

I completed my TESOL course at the end of May and 9 days later I was teaching in one of the most beautiful areas of Vietnam, google Ha Long Bay people because if you are already tempted by Vietnam then those pictures will make up your mind, they did for me.
This course is in HMCM and the city is great, it is loud and busy and everything you would expect from a big city in a country that is constantly evolving.
The course was great, I think the best part for me was the people I met and the fun we had together, I was worried at 33 that the group would all be younger than me but my class ranged from 20 to mid 50's and all wonderful people who I am still in contact with and looking forward to seeing again when I travel back down the country.
I felt that during the course I was given all of the essential information I needed in my teaching and as I had no experience previously I was very grateful to the teachers who were informative and fun, the hands on teaching experience was nerve wracking but so useful to build my confidence.
I really enjoyed this course and Vietnam is a great place to live and teach. The Vietnamese people are also extremely helpful and friendly to foreigners.

What would you improve about this program?
The staff could be a little better at providing information about the course before you arrive in the city, I had so many questions. They were happy to answer them but providing information up front would have been more helpful. The course itself was great.

I Loved It

I honestly enjoyed my month in Puerto Vallarta, I still sometimes cannot believe I left. Mexico is already a beautiful country with friendly people and great sites. The TEFL certification there was a lot of fun. We had real teaching experiences with different age groups that allowed how to gauge how we felt about potentially teaching each age group in the future. Then there is the instructor. Ours was very well rounded and has been doing this for a couple decades, so he really knows his stuff. Class was always very entertaining, and every class included some form of practical, hands-on type assignment/work. You really do learn a lot there.

What would you improve about this program?
Everything was so well done and professional, but of course even the best programs can use a liiiitttle something for improvement. So if I had to say something, I think it's that maybe the application process could be more advanced. The video application seemed a little plain. But either way, people get hired after the course, so it's not a big deal.

Teaching English with TEFL

I´m currently teaching English in Cusco, Peru with my TEFL certification that I completed in March. I actually got hired while still in the course, so I would say finding a job is really easy, especially here in Cusco. The course work wasn´t hard for me personally although you should be prepared to do a lot of out of class work. The course ran from 9-4 every day. The course is expensive but worth it, but only if you are planning on actually using it. Some students wanted a vacation and that is not the right mind set to have. I don´t recommend using the school to coordinate housing as they will overcharge you a ton! I just used Airbnb, or you can also stay in a hostel here as a lot of other students did. When entering Peru specifically, at the airport you will want to ask the immigration officer for the max amount of time allowed (which is currently 6 months). If looking to stay and work in Cusco, I highly recommend it. The city is tranquil, gorgeous, and the people are friendly. There is also a ton to do especially if you enjoy the outdoors.

What would you improve about this program?
Coordinators could offer more disclosure about cheap ways to find housing options. There is absolutely no need to be paying $600/month for a room. For example, I pay $330 per month for a two bedroom apartment which is shared by another person, making rent $165/month!
